ATTENTION MEN – A new men’s group called FATHERS

ing at 5:30 a.m. in the St. Cecilia Office Building. The sole

cious icon that directs the human family to its Father. The
Fathers of St. Joseph gatherings are not so much meetings as
they are mini retreats, whose aim is to communicate the spiri-
tuality of fatherhood in a manner that encourages and inspires
fathers to embrace, engage and – by the power of the Holy
Spirit – sanctify their vocation. The next gathering is SAT-
URDAY, April 28!

New Movie You Must See: The nationwide theatrical
release of Paul, Apostle of Christ, was March 23, 2018.
Produced by Catholic ministry ODB Filmas and star-
ring acclaimed actors Jim Caviezel and James Faulkner,
this movie dynamically and truthfully illustrates the
beginnings of Christian persecution under the Roman
Empire. St. Paul’s story is one of conversion, forgive-
ness and perseverance in the face of extreme intoler-
ance, not unlike that faced by many Christians today.
This dramatic retelling of his life can move the hearts of
both believers and nonbelievers. The film, dedicated to
the persecuted Christians of today, is an opportunity to
spread awareness of their plight among your friends,
family and community. Invite them to watch this in-
spiring film, and help spread awareness for the future of
Christianity!

580-St. Cecilia
The devotion to this holy martyr can be traced at least to the 5th century, and if it can be proved that the oldest of the churches dedicated to his honor in Constantinople was built by Constantine the Great, then certainly to a much earlier date. Very little is known of him, as certain Acts forged by ancient heretics have cast no little obscurity over his life. It is supposed that he suffered martyrdom in the persecution under Diocletian at Nicomedia in the beginning of the 4th century.
Among the Greeks St. George is called “the Great Martyr,” and his feast is kept as a holy day of obligation. His intercession was implored especially in battles, as he is said to have been a soldier. Under the first Norman Kings he was chosen as Patron of Eng-land, and Edward III instituted an order of knighthood in his honor.
There are some who suppose that it was St. George who tore down the imperial edicts of persecution when they were first pub-lished at Nicomedia. He is generally represented as engaged in combat with a dragon. He died about the year 303.
PRAYER: Lord, we acclaim Your might and humbly pray. Just as St. George imitated the Lord’s Passion, so let him now come to the aid of our weakness. Amen.

ST. GEORGE, Martyr
April 23—Patron of England
My dear parishioners,
Today on this Fourth Sunday of Easter we commemorate “Good Shepherd Sunday”. Each year on this day the Gospel reading
comes from chapter 10 of John’s Gospel where we find the Lord Jesus referring to Himself as the Good Shepherd. Indeed He is,
unlike others who are not caring of the sheep, the Lord Jesus is the one who has laid down His life for the flock. As a result of
His sacrificial love demonstrated in His suffering and death upon the Cross, now risen from the dead, He leads His sheep to the
evergreen pastures of heaven.
During the three years of their “priestly formation” the Apostles witnessed the pastoral love Jesus had shown to all those who
came to Him. He ministered to the sick, the impoverished, the possessed, the infirm, the grieving – both Jews and Gentiles
alike. After Pentecost the Apostles emerged as those ordained by Christ to continue pastoral ministry in His Name. In today’s
reading from Acts of the Apostles we see the Apostle Peter fearlessly preaching and healing in the Name of our Savior. Like-
wise, their successors today are charged with the fulfillment of this pastoral mission until He returns again in glory.
This Sunday is an ideal time for us to reflect upon the pastoral ministry Christ entrusted to the Apostles and their successors
through the sacrament of holy orders. We are invited to pray for those appointed as shepherds for the flock of Christ. They need
our prayers and our support. Those chosen by Christ for ministry are human, thus they are weak and vulnerable like all. We
need to strengthen them and uphold them in prayer so that they may have the courage to do what the Lord requires.
How blessed we are in Rockaway! Next month we will witness the priestly ordination of two young men intimately connected
with our two parishes. Deacon Joseph Boykow and Deacon Mateusz Darlak will be ordained on Saturday, May 26 th in Saint
John the Baptist Cathedral in Paterson by His Excellency, Bishop Arthur Serratelli. Father Matt and Father Joseph will be won-
derful additions to the ranks of those shepherds serving” the flock of Paterson.” Let us pray for them today as they prepare for
pastoral service in the days ahead. May the Lord send us more good shepherds!
Christ is Risen!
