BISHOP TO VISIT OUR PARISH – Father Zig has in-

vited our new Bishop, His Excellency, the Most Reverend

Kevin J. Sweeney, Bishop of Paterson, to make a pastoral

visit to our parish to celebrate our parish patron feast day.

The Bishop will celebrate the 12:15 pm Mass on Sunday,

November 22nd, which is the Feast day of Saint Cecilia, Vir-

gin and Martyr. Please mark the date and plan to attend as

we welcome our new Bishop to Rockaway.

CEMETERY MASSES – Holy Mass to celebrate the

Lord’s Day will take place at the parish cemetery (across

from Parks Lake) on Saturday afternoon @ 4:30 pm and

Sunday afternoon at 12:15. In the event of inclement

weather the Mass will be celebrated in the church. Please

bring a lawn chair and a hat for the sun. (The other Masses

for the weekend will be celebrated in the church.)

PARKING AT THE CEMETERY— I thank God that we

are able to celebrate the liturgy at the parish cemetery and I

plan to continue this practice until the weather turns cold. I

ask for your cooperation in parking at the cemetery. One of

the neighbors has reported to me that parishioners are park-

ing on his lawn and has asked that this practice would cease.

Also it has been reported to me that some are parking too

close to the edge of the road causing a traffic problem in

front of the cemetery. Please obey all parking and traffic

laws so that we do not get into trouble. FATHER ZIG

HOLY HOUR TO RESUME – Holy Hour will resume in

After months of uncertainty, discussions, and planning, we

year. Significant adjustments to our normal programs have

our programs for this year, will be only a short term

RCIA 2020-2021

(Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults)

RCIA is a program for adults that are interested in being

received into the Catholic Church via Baptism, Holy Com-

munion, or Confirmation. If you or someone you know has

for whatever reason never received one of these sacraments,

and would like to enter into the fullness of the Catholic

Church, please reach out! This is a small group that works

with each candidate to help prepare them for the reception of

the sacraments and the fullness of participation in the life of

the church. The program includes weekly classes on Thurs-

day evenings from October through April.

THIS FALL – Due to the pandemic our fall faith formation

My dear parishioners,

Today is the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. As we gather to celebrate the Sacred Mysteries on the Lord’s Day the Sacred

Scriptures resound with serious tones. In the Gospel we hear the Lord Jesus speak of His upcoming suffering and death in the

Holy City of Jerusalem. He speaks of the cross which not only He will bear but also all those who are united with Him. The

Lord says that those who love their life on this earth will not experience the eternal life He will win for all believers by virtue

of His Holy Resurrection.

In the Old Testament reading from the Prophet Jeremiah we are introduced to the one who will be the subject of jeering and

derision. This One is the Christ, the selfless one, who was sent to bear witness to the truth by proclaiming the love and mercy

of God.

In the epistle reading the Apostle Paul wrote to the Church in Rome urging them to offer themselves, in the manner of Jesus,

as living sacrifices to God. The offering of themselves in this manner gives praise to God in a most pleasing way.

The offering of ourselves in a sacrificial manner is something which becomes increasingly unpopular today. Our culture and

the constant messages which come from it encourage us to selfishness and a disconnect from others. Individualism and self

gratification are the name of the game we are being urged to take part in. SACRIFICE is a nasty word in the secular world as

it often has to do with commitment. Taking up your cross and following Jesus is not at all attractive or conceivable for the

unbeliever. However, this is the invitation we are offered by the Lord of Heaven and earth, who came not to serve but to serve

and who gave His life in ransom for many. The Lord’s committed love for us is a model for our relationship with one another.

Today’s Sacred Texts are inviting us to remember that our lives are an offering to God. Our lives are to be marked with self-

less service to one another and to the up-building of Christ’s Church on earth. This way of life is not an easy one for it calls us

to sacrificial living as we commit ourselves to Christ.

So why not ask yourself: how can I assist in building up Christ’s Church; are there opportunities for me to help the needy or

forgotten; how can I live my life like Jesus? When we begin to ask ourselves these kind of questions and answer them self-

lessly we will be a “living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.” However, when turning a deaf ear to this call let us also re-

member the concluding words of Jesus in today’s Gospel: “For the Son of Man will come with His angels in His Father’s

glory, and then He will repay all according to his conduct.”

ST. ROSALIA, VIRGIN

September 4—Patroness of Palermo

ST. ROSALIA, daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Roses and Quisquina, was a descendant of the great Charlemagne. She was born at Palermo in Sicily. In her youth, her heart turned from earthly vanities to God. She left her home and took up her abode in a cave, on the walls of which she wrote these words: “I, Rosalia, daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Roses, and Quisquina, have taken the resolution to live in this cave for the love of my Lord, Jesus Christ.” She remained there entirely hidden from the world.

Rosalia practiced great mortifications and lived in constant communion with God. Afterward she transferred her abode to Mount Pellegrino, about three miles from Palermo, in order to triumph entirely over the instincts of flesh and blood, in sight of her paternal home. She is said to have appeared after death and to have revealed that she spent several years in a little exca-vation near the grotto. She died alone, in 1160, ending her strange and wonderful life unknown to the world. Her body was discovered in 1625, during the pontificate of Pope Urban VIII.

PRAYER Lord God, You showered heavenly gifts on St. Rosalia, Your Virgin. Help us to imitate her virtues during our earthly life and enjoy eternal happiness with her in heaven. Amen
