Care to help distribute extra food from those who “have” to those who “have not?”

For almost 10 years, parishioners from St. Cecilia ac-cept bread donations from a local restaurant and distrib-ute it to the needy. Currently, there is a need for pick-up at closing on Friday night (10:30 PM) and distribution the next day, Saturday morning (9AM) to a location near the Trade Zone. If you could help even for a few weeks or have any questions, please call (973-625-3589.) Thank you!

Our Thursday morning for mom group is looking for a few (more) grandfriends! We already have 10 very devoted and

dedicated parishioners from St.Cecilia and Sacred Heart who help care for children, so that their mothers can grow closer to

Our Lord through Scripture study and prayer. Our group is gaining a few more moms/children for the fall so we could

use some more help. If you remember what it was like to try and have a prayer life with small children, and know how important it is to allow moms to have time for spiritual re-newal, please consider joining us! We meet from 9:30-11am

Thursdays. All grandfriends must complete background check and protecting God's children training. Please contact Jennifer Nelson, group coordinator, for more information.

PRAYER FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS Good and gracious Father, whose own Beloved Son suffered violence and death for the salvation of the world, listen gra-ciously to our cry for all who are being persecuted for their faith. In your great mercy, comfort them with the Holy Spirit. Give them strength in the face of hostility and courage in theface of trial. Open the eyes of those who raise their hands in violence to see others as their brothers and sisters, children of the one Father of all. By your grace, turn their hearts from hatred to love. Through the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Queen of Peace, may justice and peace prevail so that all may have the freedom to worship you, the one true God and him whom you have sent, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

David Currie was raised in a devout Christian fam-ily whose father was a fundamentalist preacher and both parents teachers at Moody Bible Institute. Currie's whole upbringing was immersed in the life of fundamentalist Protestantism...theology profes-sors, seminary presidents, and founders of evan-gelical mission agencies were frequent guests at his family dinner table. Currie received a degree from Trinity International University and studied in the Masters of Divinity.

This book was written as an explanation to his fundamentalist and evangelical friends and family about why he became Catholic. Currie presents a very lucid, systematic, and intelligible account of the rea-sons for his conversion to the ancient Church that Christ founded. He gives a detailed discussion of the important theological and doctrinal beliefs Catholics and evangelicals hold in common, as well as the key doctrines that separate us, particularly the Eucharist, the Pope, and Mary.

DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET – The final Di-vine Mercy Chaplet service at Sacred Heart Church will take place on Friday, August 28th at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Beginning on Friday, September 11th we will move the weekly Divine Mercy Chaplet service to Saint Cecilia Church at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. 580-St. Cecilia

My dear parishioners, The Lord’s Day is our weekly observance of Christ’s Holy Resurrection. To-day we mark the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time. For five weeks we have read chapter 6 of Saint John’s Gospel which is called “the Bread of Life Discourse.”

The evangelist presents the words of Our Savior which are the source of our Eucharistic theology, our belief in the real presence of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. The scriptural texts for these past Sundays have provided us the opportunity to reflect upon that which the documents of the Second Vatican Council call, “the source and summit of our life.” Today’s Gospel periscope concludes chapter six with some listeners of Jesus parting company with Him because He says, “I am the Bread of Life” and other such disclosures. They will not accept such teaching and so they reject this theology of the Eucha-rist. Although some reject the Lord’s words the Apostles accept this teaching. Saint Peter, the leader of the Apostles, makes an affirmation of faith, “We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” The Apostles will hand down this Eucharistic faith which we now possess today. Making the decision to accept the teachings of Jesus which have come down to us from the Apostles is left to each individual. The Creator has given us the free will to accept or to reject, we decide. Each of us has to make the decision to assent to the Church’s teaching. When we wisely decide to welcome this apostolic faith we stand in the company of those blessed ones whose praises are sung in the Scriptures. Let me say it again, the handing down of this faith is the work of parents. Mom and Dad, “…subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ,” they are the teachers in the family who witness to these mysteries by words and deeds. Together they in-struct their children in the theology of the Holy Eucharist with the assistance of the Church’s ministers. By pointing their chil-dren to the Holy Mass and the reception of the Bread of Life, parents show their longing for their children to be one day in heaven as they recall Jesus’ words, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven, whoever eats this bread will live forever.” Christian parents take seriously the spiritual responsibilities they have for the children God has given them. They can say with Joshua, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” May the Lord continue to bless our parish, our household of faith, and that through our Sunday Eucharistic liturgies we may always “taste and see the goodness of the Lord.” God bless you! Father Zig

ST. MONICA came into the world in the year 333. As soon as she was old enough she was married to Patricius, a pagan citizen of Tagaste. Although Patricius was a man of high temper, she bore all trials with great patience. Her example and gentle conduct exercised such an influence over him that he was finally converted to Christianity. He died the year after his baptism. The great cross of her life was the conduct of her son, Augustine, who was seventeen years of age when his father died in 371. His mother prayed long and fervently for his conversion. When he left her in Africa to go to Italy, she followed him and found him at Milan, where the words of St. Ambrose had already convinced him of the falsehood of Manichean doctrines, which he abandoned without being entirely converted. In August, 386, St. Monica had the long coveted happiness of seeing her son return to God. He was baptized by St. Ambrose on Easter eve the following year and soon afrter, with his mother and some vfriends, he set out for Africa. But St. Monica’s work was done; her son was converted; the sinner had become a Saint. She fell sick on the road and died at Ostia, from where they were to embark, in 387. PRAYER: God, Comforter of the afflicted, You accepted St. Monica’s tears to bring about the conversion of her son St. Augustine. Through their intercession, grant that we may have contrition for our sins and experience the grace of Your pardon.
