Thursdays. All grandfriends must complete background check and protecting God's children training. Please contact Jennifer Nelson, group coordinator, for more information.

DIOCESAN & COMMUNITY NEWS

The Donut Man Is Coming To Sacred Heart of Jesus Church

Friday, September 25th—7:00 pm A Donut Man concert grabs children right where they are with a wonderful blend of Bible songs, stories and lots of audience participation. Rob Evans, The Donut Man, presents the Gospel in a way that introduces young children and their families to the basic elements of the Christian faith and gives them lots to talk about when they get home 'cause the concert is exciting! Children are brought from out of the audience to help the Donut Man tell his stories and to do the hand‑motions that go with the songs. Even Duncan the Talking Donut pops out of his bakery box to sing a "whole" song. A Donut Man concert is a great place for young families to sow seeds of Biblical values into their lives. Values that Rob has cultivated with his wife and their six children (and now 7 grandchildren). It works.

2015 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Serving Christ Among Us

As you consider your pledge to the 2015 Bishop’s Annual Appeal, it is important to know that the Partners in Faith campaign conducted in 2013 and the Bishop’s Annual Appeal are different drives serving different needs. The Partners in Faith campaign raised funds for ministries outside the Diocese’s general operating funds and included some endowments with an eye toward future needs. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal, on the other hand, helps fund immediate, day-to-day operations of four important ministries and programs: Catholic Charities, seminarian education, our diocesan priests’ retirement residence and our inner-city schools. A parish would not suspend its Sunday collection after con-ducting a major parish capital campaign because it is needed to fund the day-to day operations of the parish. Similarly, the Diocese cannot suspend the Bishop’s Annual Appeal since it helps fund the annual operations of important ministries and programs.

With this in mind, please be as generous as possible to this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal. If you have received the Bishop’s letter, please prayerfully respond today.

retreat on Friday, Oct. 2 from 9:15am – 2:15pm at All Saints Parish Hall, 15 Basking Ridge Rd., Millington, NJ 07946 The topic, “Why Would God Want to Journey with Me?” is adapted from Psalm 139, known as David’s psalm; a hymnal meditation on God’s presence within us! 580-St. Cecilia

My dear parishioners, In our Eucharistic assembly we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day as we mark the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time. We begin this week with the commemora-tion of CATECHETICAL SUNDAY, a nationwide observance highlighting

religious education and its significance in the life of every Christian. It is the duty of every pastor to remind the faithful that we are all life-long learners as Christ’s followers. As long as we are alive we are students in the school of discipleship and learning the ways of Jesus is an ongoing formation to which we must be committed. For too long we saw religious education as something only for children, once we received the sacrament of confir-mation the learning was all over. This view has been disastrous not only for the individual but for the Church as a whole. The belief that religious education, or as we refer to it today ‘faith formation,’ is only for children has produced adults who do not know their faith and, when called upon, cannot defend it. The documents of the Second Vatican Council tells us that parents are the primary teachers of religion to their children, I always remind the parents of this fact when I give a homily at a baptism. Since this is the case, should not parents strive to be informed regarding the faith so that they can hand on to their children what has been give us by the Apostles? Should not holy things, eter-nal things be matters which parents hold as valuable and want to lavish upon their children? I would hope so! And if this is so, parents and all adults need to avail themselves to the opportunities in which we learn and celebrate our life in Christ. This will be an exciting week for all of us as American Catholics as we welcome our Holy Father, Pope Francis to the United States. I know that the Pope’s presence in our country will produce a lot of positive publicity for the Church and will serve as the catalyst for inquiry regarding the faith. Will Catholics be ready to answer the questions and speak to the comments they might hear this week from co-workers and neighbors? I hope that our Holy Father’s visit will be the encouragement all of us need to investigate and participate in the faith formation opportunities which are available within our parish. Let me also remind you of the excellent programs being offered at the diocesan evangelization center in Madison. You can check on line at http://www.insidethewalls.org/ or pick up a program which can be found in the church vestibule. Don’t put it off any longer, faith in Christ the Savior is too important and has eternal ramifications. Learning will give you the ability to pass down this treasure of faith to your loved ones and to those who come to you with questions.

God Bless,

Fr. Zig

STS. COSMAS AND DAMIAN, Martyrs September 28—Patrons of Druggists

Sts. Cosmas and Damian were brothers, born in Arabia, who had become eminent for their skill in the science of medicine. Being Christians, they were filled with the spirit of charity and never took money for their services. At. Egaea in Cilician, where they lived, they enjoyed the highest esteem of the people. When the persecution under Diocletian broke out, their very prominence rendered them marked objects of persecu-tion. Being apprehended by order of Lysias, Governor of Cilicia, they underwent various torments and were finally beheaded about the year 283. PRAYER: Lord, may the devout memorial of Sts. Cosmas and Damian render praise to You. For in Your ineffable providence You conferred eternal glory on them and a duty on us. Amen Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey
