2015 Fortnight for Freedom: June 21 to July 4 Please continue to pray for religious lib‐erty during this year's Fortnight for Free‐dom: Freedom to Bear Witness. This two‐week period of prayer and action, which began on June 21 and ends July 4, is a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecu‐tion by political power‐St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. The theme of this year's Fortnight focuses on the "freedom to bear witness" to the truth of the Gospel.

Care to help distribute extra food from those who “have” to those who “have not?” For almost 10 years, parishioners from St. Cecilia accept bread donations from a local restaurant and distribute it to the needy. Currently, there is a need for pick-up at closing on Friday night (10:30 PM) and distribution the next day, Saturday morning (9AM) to a location near the Trade Zone. If you could help even for a few weeks or have any questions, please call (973-625-3589.) Thank you!

LOOK FOR THIS BOOK IN THE KIOSK Over the past 20 years, Matthew Kelly has seen more of the

world than most presidents and more of the Church than most bishops. Now, in this unique and timely book, he proposes that Catholicism is not a lifeless set of rules and regulations , but a way of life designed by God to help each person reach his or her full potential. With remark-able insight, Kelly dispels dozens of myths that surround the rejection of Catholicism today and provides a profound and practi-cal vision of what will lead the Catholic

Church to thrive again in the future. Rediscover Catholi-cism is quickly becoming the most read catholic book of our times. From the spellbinding opening story, Kelly grips his readers and takes them on a life-changing journey to redis-cover the genius of Catholicism.

580-St. Cecilia

My dear parishioners, Today is the Lord’s Day and the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The scriptural texts speak about those chosen and sent by the Lord to witness in His Name. The Gospel Acclamation proclaims: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me for He

sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor.” (Luke 4:18) The Lord has always sent out those He chooses to teach, govern and sanctify in His Name. Throughout salvation history we see those called to leave the security of their families, homes, livelihood and culture to serve the Lord in the upbuilding of His Kingdom on earth. Those who answer this call experience the sufferings which Saint Paul speaks of in his correspondence to the Corinthians as we find in today’s second reading. I am delighted that Father Mateusz Jasniewicz and Deacon Slawomir Tomaszewski have answered the call to serve the Church of Paterson. Both clergymen have been assigned to Rockaway by Bishop Serratelli and both moved into the rectory last Monday. Father Mateusz becomes our new parochial vicar who will join Father Marcin and myself in providing priestly service to Saint Cecilia and Sacred Heart of Jesus Parishes. Deacon Slawik will also assist us while attending English language classes at Rutgers University (Newark) Monday through Friday. Like all missionaries they have left their country and all that was familiar to them to come to our diocese and serve us in the Name of Jesus. We welcome them to the two best parishes in the Diocese of Paterson! I am so proud of you, my parishioners, who warmly greet our new priest and deacon. Your kindness, hospitality, patience and gentleness are what make you so outstanding in Christian virtues. Our Bishop sees Rockaway as a wonderful school for young men to gain pastoral experience and sees our support as a sign of great faith in Christ Jesus who “came not to be served but to serve and to give His life in ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28) The unofficial start to the vacation season begins and so does a well deserved rest. For the next two months we are relaxing a bit in the parish. Most regular meetings and religious education classes have been suspended until after Labor Day. Daily Mass and the Sunday Celebration of the Eucharist remains in force and I remind all of the OBLIGATION TO ATTEND SUNDAY MASS – FAILURE TO DO SO RESULTS IN BREAKING THE COMMANDMENTS WHICH PUTS US IN SERIOUS SIN AND THE NEED FOR CONFESSION BEFORE APPROACH-ING HOLY COMMUNION! I hope that work will begin shortly on a few projects: installation of new curbing in the parish parking lot, installation of new stairs for the back of the rectory, remodeling of the children’s room in the lower level of the parish office and the installation of a new heating and air condi-tioning system for the rectory. I am most grateful for the upgrading of the electric panel and other work done in the church which was funded by a parishioner who wishes to remain anony-mous. May God bless them! And may God bless you! Happy 4th of July and God bless America, too! Father Zig

ST. BENEDICT, Abbot Patron of Poison Sufferers—July 11

The Patriarch of Western monasticism was born at Nursia, in central Italy, about 480. In his youth, seeing the corruption of the world, he left home to life a hermit’s life of penance and prayer in a cave in the mountain of Subiaco, near Rome, where he was instructed in Christian asceticism by St. Romanus, a Solitary of the vicinity. His reputation for sanctity gathered a large number of disciples around him, for whom he erected monasteries in which they lived a community life under a prescribed rule. In the year 529, he left Subiaco for Monte Cassino, and there founded the great Abbey which became the center of religious life in Europe. The principles of the Rule written by St. Benedict became the basis of religious life for all Western religious orders and congregations after his time. It shows the way to religious perfection by the practice of self-conquest, mortification, humility, obedience, prayer, silence, retirement, and detachment from the world and its cares. St. Scholastica, the sister of st. Benedict, was the first Benedictine nun. She presided over a monastery of nuns near Monte Cassino. St. Benedict died March 21, 543, as he stood before the altar of Monte Cassino immediately after receiving Holy Com-munion. PRAYER: God, You established St. Benedict the Abbot as an admirable teacher in the school of Divine servitude. Teach us never to prefer anything to Your love and always to run the way of Your commandments with most generous dispositions. Amen Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey
