SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO
PARISH SCHOOL
Transition to reopening school
August 2020
Father, we pray for a spirit of cooperation and eagerness to contribute to the needs of the whole body, so that Your Church is built not just with sweat, bricks, and mortar but with love, care, and teamwork. Therefore we go forth in unity and purpose as we do our part in building each other up in the various natural gifts and learned skills You have given us as we strive for unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God. Amen.
We are so pleased to have your kids return to school - we have missed you!• Our plan takes into account many facets of child development
• Spiritual
• Physical
• Social/emotional
• Academic
• Practical
• We have worked for many weeks • Researching science/medical information
• Consulting with parents from Saint Charles who are in the medical field
• Considered all aspects of the how to best serve students at Saint Charles School
• Taking into considerations guidelines to open safely from the state of Ohio
• Adjusting teaching best practices and techniques (including technology)
This plan is a framework for the future –being flexible as conditions in the community change• We present this plan to the families of the Saint Charles Borromeo Parish School based on
results from • parent surveys• discussion with medical professionals• discussion with educational professionals• discussion with parish staff
• Knowing that there six weeks remain until school begins on August 26, this is the plan on July 17, 2020• Our knowledge is up-to-date• Our plan is to keep this plan• We are required to follow the state and county guidelines and if those change, we have to
adapt• We will continue to read, research and keep a growth mindset
Welcome back to Saint CharlesIn person learning Synchronous learning
Five days a week, all students welcome
back

Association of Pediatrics and Cuyahoga
County Board of Health

Continuing to follow the diocesan
curriculum based on Ohio Learning
Standards
Mass and other religious practices as
priority

Using Google Classroom to log in to learning
Participate in live lessons, direct instruction may
be recorded
Privacy of children in person protected
Teachers will check in with those at home during
class to see if those students have questions
Families must choose for a full quarter, not a
daily choice (except when quarantined)
All assignments due when in person assignments
are due
For those who choose in person learning(Won’t it be great to someday be this close to one another again!?)
Transportation via Parma City Schools
• On July 8, Parma City Schools transportation was contacted by Saint Charles about buses
• The response was: “We are unsure what our plans are at this point, as we are still waiting for guidance on what we can now have on buses...it has changed so many times.”
• We can appreciate the lack of direction for all of us at this time
• As of July 17, 2020 we do not have detailed information from Parma City Schools regarding bus transportation
• We will keep those who use Parma City Schools transportation updated as we know about equitable services for non-public schools
• We will advocate for what is just and fair (know that the Catholic Conference of Ohio “has the ear” of the governor and legislature)
What about masks?Masks Masks
Students in preschool will not wear masks
Students who want to wear a mask all day are
certainly welcome to do so
Students in kindergarten through grade two may
have to wear a mask for very short instances
Students in grades three through eight will wear
a mask when not at their desk or when in closer
proximity to others
Teachers will wear masks when working with
students one-on-one/groups in close proximity
Teachers may wear a face shield when in front of
the room providing direct instruction
The school will have a supply of disposable
masks for students who forget a mask on any
given day
Considerations in making these decisions:
The science regarding the viral load of children
The science regarding the ace 2 receptors of
children
The science of asymptomic conditions of Covid19
that are possible with children and adults
The physical implications of wearing masks
during the heat in a building without air
conditioning (we will move classes into rooms
throughout the campus with AC when necessary)
The need to see the face of and clearly hear the
voice of other people – specifically the teacher
* All cloth masks must be washed each day at home
Are all masks acceptable?
• Parents are asked to have their children practice putting on a facemask and wearing a mask before the first day of school
• We are not requiring any specific masks
• Masks that stay around neck will be less likely to be lost or fall on floor than those that are taken off and put on through the day
• Masks with political statements should be saved for home or other situations that are not school
• Masks with skulls or look scary should be saved for home or other situations that are not school – we do not want the younger kids to feel uncomfortable or scared
• Disposable masks are not to be worn for more than one school day
What about physical distancing?Distancing Distancing
We are awaiting the revised guidelines for
preschool from the state of Ohio
We are able to physically distance the students in
most of the kindergarten through eighth grade
classrooms based on the recommendations from
the American Association of Pediatrics and
Cuyahoga County Board of Health of three feet
The grade levels with larger numbers are divided
into smaller groups as possible
All extra furniture has been removed so that desks
can be spaced throughout the rooms and all desks
are facing the same way for direct instruction
In the cafeteria, students will be spread
out through the whole of the space,
but still able to eat with friends
In computer and art, students will have acrylic
dividers between students (which will be sanitized
between classes) and keyboards will have plastic
covers that will be sanitized between use
In music, the students will be spaced out and, for
the time being, taught without singing and only
using instruments that can be sanitized between
use until the research is “in” regarding both
In PE, kids will be spread out and taught healthy
physical activities – when equipment is used, it will
be sanitized between classes
Cleaning the schoolStudents will School will
Practice good hygiene including washing
hands and/or using hand sanitizer
throughout the day (there are going to be
hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the
school)
Wear masks when indicated/instructed
Continue the great daily cleaning of the
school and cafeteria
Add times of disinfecting restrooms
throughout the day
Beginning of the Day
Parents will School will
Send their healthy kids to school each day
Will refrain from giving children fever
reducing medications to disguise illness
If child is absent, will give details of reasons
(including if student is truly ill or staying
home is parent choice)
Be sure children have all necessary
supplies, homework and lunch to eliminate
extra trips back into school by adults
Extra visitors to the school would be limited
and properly screened
Take the temperature of each student and
adult who enters the school (including staff)
Staff will complete a daily questionnaire
about health
Those with a temperature of over 100.4
with a contactless thermometer would be
rescreened with a more accurate
thermometer
Those students with confirmed fever will
remain in the secondary “clinic” until adult
on Emergency Form is able to pick up child
New procedure for entering the building in the morning
Preschool
• Most likely will use the car drop off method of arrival and dismissal –more information to come soon
Kindergarten through grade eight
• Students will not have a designated door
• Students will not stand outside in line, but rather will be permitted to enter the building starting at 7:45am, not earlier
• Families of students who arrive prior to 7:45am will be charged for a full hour of morning care
• Students will have temperature taken upon entering the building
Absence
Parents will School will
Call the school office by 9am with the
exact reason(s) for absence
Will notify school if there is a positive
CoVid19 case with their child or if a
CoVid19 positive person is living in the
house with child
Will only send a positive Covid 19 child back
to school when student has met the current
guidelines of the Cuyahoga County Board of
Health
Notify school community if there is a
CoVid19 case – protecting the privacy of
the person much like if there is a
communicable disease (no names)
Notify the Cuyahoga County Board of
Health if there is someone who tests
positive for Covid19 in school and get
directions
Allow students to access synchronous and
limited asynchronous learning while absent
Lunch/Recess
Lunch (air conditioned space) Recess
Sit in spaces designated by the table
markings (additional space between
students and sit diagonal to each other) but
still able to sit “near” friends
Will wait in line for hot lunch (beginning
August 31) on the designated floor
markings
No masks during outside recess
Will be taught new recess games that do not
involve close proximity for lengthy times
Will enjoy sunshine and playing
Switching classes and lockers (jr. high)
What is the same What is different
Students in grades 5 through 8 will
physically switch classes to give them an
opportunity to move during the day
When students change classes, they will
stay on specific sides of the hall – the halls
in the new building are particularly spacious
There are no combination locks on the
lockers in the junior high
Lockers to be used are every other locker
and students will be called in small groups
Water and Restroom Breaks
Students will School will
Bring their own water bottles to school to
be filled at the new water bottle filler water
fountains
Follow the restroom schedule created by
the teachers
Wash their hands with soap and water for
at least 20 seconds after using the facilities
Provide water bottles for a student who
does not have their own water bottle (one
time only)
Disinfect the water fountains and restrooms
regularly throughout the day
Reinforce with students the protocols for
handwashing
Have extra hand sanitizer dispensers
throughout the school
Physical Education in 2020
• Students in grades 1-3 will wear PE uniforms – t-shirt, shorts/sweatpants/tennis shoes - to school on assigned PE days
• Students in grades 4-8 will wear PE uniforms to school on assigned PE days with the requirement of changing into a different Saint Charles or plain t-shirt and applying deodorant after PE class
• Mrs. K will do her best to teach/practice legitimate non-contact wellness and mental and physical fitness
Mass on Fridays Parents will School will
Pray for their own children as well as all the
children and staff of the school for health,
safety and emotional and spiritual well-
being
Refrain from attending in person 8:30am
Mass on Friday so that maximum social
distancing for students can take place
Watch 8:30am Mass on Friday as it should
be able to be live-streamed by that time
Divide the school so that students attend
8:30am Mass on Fridays every other week
Music will enhance liturgy, but students will
not sing at this time
Due to regulations surrounding separation
of church and state, we are not able to live-
stream Mass into classrooms on technology
that is paid for through government funds
Prayer services/religion classes will take
place in classrooms every other week when
not at Mass
Assemblies
• We still want to continue to build our awesome school community!
• School assemblies will be done by smaller grade level groups so that spacing can be maintained
• Parents will not be able to attend the assemblies at this time
For those who choose synchronous learning
Saint Charles is providing synchronous learning
• Exceptions to synchronous learning (meaning watching recorded direct instruction = asynchronous) would be students who are physically ill or for a particular class or two are not able to log on to learn in a live session (which would be limited times/occasions)
• Doctor’s note (0r other approved excuse) is required for students to take part on asynchronous learning
• It is not an option for students to sleep in because they stayed up late and want to watch classes later
• Teachers will respond to students’ and parents’ questions within 24 hours
Saint Charles synchronous learning expectations
Students will School will
Be ready to learn at 8:15am each day and follow the regular
schedule as if they were in school
Dressed for school (uniform not necessary, but pajamas are
not acceptable)
In a location at home that is “school space” – not in bed
Log in to Google Classroom/Meet at the beginning of each
class (attendance will be taken)
Be present (with face) for each class – teacher needs to see
actual students on screen at school (video must be on at all
times- no “name only” or picture to take place of face)
Ask questions as class is in session if clarification is needed
Complete assignments as students in person would turn in
school work and homework
Provide instruction and ability to log on for learning in real
time
Provide technology (Chromebook) to students who do not
have technology at home
Teach students at home as best they can and as if they were
at school in person
Record direct instruction only
Live stream, but not recording, time students are working
independently
Expect students learning synchronously to participate in class
and complete assignments in a timely manner
Provide feedback regarding assignments
Use the same grade scale that is used for students who are
learning in person
After school clubs
• We will wait until the end of the first quarter and re-evaluate conditions at that time to begin the following
• Chess club• Scrabble club• Lego club• Math lab• Junior high music ministry• Youth choir• Student council• Rock On Road Crew• Young Rembrandts• Not sure about orchestra and band yet
The school will be clean
• As it has been in the past, the school will be cleaned each afternoon/evening
• Teachers will keep classrooms clean
• There will not be PCRF for the first months of school - will re-evalaute in November
• The special education PSR program will be suspended until further notice
• CYO sports are not under the purview of the school, but rather the parish• The determination about CYO sports is still under review
• The athletic director will take all necessary precautions to keep kids safe
• CYO site administrator will coordinate with maintenance regarding cleaning after events that are held in the gym
• Coaches will be responsible to clean after their team has completed practice
Curriculum Night and Conferences
• We will not have the traditional ONE night of dropping off supplies and picking up books
• We will have two designated time periods (much like we had at the end of the school year to bring items back/pick up personal items) for families to come in and drop off supplies, meet the teacher and get books and other necessary materials
• Each teacher will record him/herself welcoming everyone back and explaining the curriculum/expectations for the year
• At this time, the plan is to hold October conferences virtually – while we would love to offer an option for families (to be in person or virtual), the scheduling of such options would prove difficult for teachers
• Kindergarten will not have staggered entrance as in the past
Should there be a mandate to close all schools again in Ohio…
• It will be much different from March 2020• We will not be “sending home” all the work for the
week on Saturdays/Sundays
• We will be ready to provide live teaching/learning
• The grade scale will remain the same
• Assignments will be due on the day assigned – not on Friday at 3:00pm
• Teachers will be live for specific times during the day providing instruction
• Teachers will have office hours during specific times during the day
• There will not be 24 hour access to teachers, but teachers are always willing to provide much assistance
Again –welcome back!
