Dear Family of God in Salford Diocese, As you will have heard on Tuesday of last week the Holy Father, Pope Francis, announced that he had appointed a new Bishop of Salford, Bishop John Arnold, (currently Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Westminster), and that I am now free to retire after the installation of the new bishop at St John’s Cathedral, Salford. This will take place on Monday, 8th December, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. I commend him to you and I know you will give him a warm welcome; and I am confident that he will serve you well and quickly earn your affection. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to you all for the prayers that you have offered for my ministry among you: I have been very conscious of that strength behind me. I am also grateful for the affirmation and collaboration that I have received from the Diocesan family in so many ways: it has been a privilege to serve you all. I recognise that I did not always get it right and at times some of you were frustrated by my decisions but I pray God that, together, we have done some great things for Him and that we are in good heart to go forward on the journey of faith with Bishop John. After the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Mennini, had advised me that the announcement of the new bishop was imminent, it struck me how very appropriate the readings at morning mass for the next couple of days were; from the Book of Ecclesiastes where it speaks about a time for living, a time for dying, a time for building and time for reaping and so on: and that in the great scheme of God’s providence there is always the risk of vanity if we think we did it by our own merits: all we have is God’s gift; all we achieve is through God’s providence. St Augustine, the great Bishop of Hippo, said: “Trust the past to the mercy of God; the present to his love and the future to his providence”.

So I simply say, thank you: God bless you. And I promise to keep you all in prayer as I prepare to move to the apartments for retired clergy at the Cathedral. I have enjoyed being part of this family of God, and the last words I would like to share with you I take from that great and holy Lancashire lass Alice Ingham: “Isn’t God great!”With every blessing,
