Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 24, 2016 “You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him

through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.”

From the Pastor In the first reading today we see Abraham interceding to God on behalf of the people of Sodom. They are so wicked and sinful that they call upon themselves divine judgment in this life. So bad are their sins that God won’t wait until after their deaths for Divine Judgment. Most Catholics are familiar with the term mortal sin. Mortal sins deprive the soul of grace. They are serious transgressions of God's law, done freely and deliberately with a clear under-standing of what they are. Their result is to deny a soul entrance to heaven. There are particular mortal sins that are so evil that they are said to be sins that cry to heaven for vengeance: murder (Gn 4:10), sodomy (Gn 17:20-21), oppression of the poor (Ex 2:23), and defrauding workers of their just wages (Jas 5:4). Sins against the Holy Spirit are mortal sins that harden a soul by its rejection of the Holy Spirit. Six sins are in this category. They are despair, presumption, envy, obstinacy in sin, final impenitence, and deliberate resistance to the known truth. Sadly, not even ten good people could be found in Sodom to stave off God’s wrath. What’s even more sad is that today, in this nation, these same sins are committed with great frequency. Even worse, the popular culture celebrates these sins and, quite frankly, makes them their sacraments. I mean, can any nation murder 1,000,000 innocents every year and not endure the wrath of God? Throw in all those other sins and we’re not looking good. Thankfully though, there are still lots of good people here. People who, like Abraham, can intercede for the rest of the nation. This people is God’s Church, you and me. As Jesus tells us in the gospel God is a giver of good gifts, even better ones than we could hope for. God, in his wonderful goodness seeks not the destruction of the sinner but his conversion. And so, let us pray for the gift of conversion for this nation. The United States was founded on godly principles so let us pray that we return to them, each and every inhabitant of this land.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;

Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is error, the truth; Where there is doubt, the faith; Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek

To be consoled, as to console; To be understood, as to understand;

To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive;

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal

life. Amen.
