People of Our Parish

From Our Pastor:From Our Pastor:Jesus Christ loves us so much that He warns us in this Sunday’s Gospel about Gehenna

(the Greek word for Hell) Jesus warns us because He is our Lord and Savior, and our friend Jesus knows that we, His disciples, can only reach eternal happiness by His grace, through friendship with Him, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matthew 5:17-37)

In His infinite love for us, Jesus warns us about what could damage or hinder our relationship with Him – for although nothing can separate us from His love, our sinful actions could lead us to eternity spent without Him (some sins are deadly/mortal, 1 John 5) An eternity without God is what we call Hell – an indescribably painful prospect because we, as children of God, were created to live in communion with God forever in Heaven Jesus loves us, always Therefore, He tells us the truth, including the tough truth about Heaven and Hell, because we need to know it

Saint Paul encourages us this Sunday about God’s magnificent, wise, loving, divine plan for us – a plan to follow that will bring us to Heaven, which is beyond our imagination (1 Corinthians 2:6-10) Just as Hell, eternal separation from God, is a reality worth being warned about, so Heaven, eternal love, peace and joy, and unimaginable fulfillment in God, is a reality worth being encouraged about for everyone who desires to follow Jesus

As Jesus instructs us and Saint Paul encourages us, when we’re aware that our earthly life is a pilgrimage to eternity, we will then put in the right perspective all our life experiences, including our successes, failures, joys and sorrows We will more readily do what God tells us to do: keep His Commandments; live the virtues of faith, hope and love; stay close to Him in prayer, His Church, Word and Sacraments; seek the intercession and example of the saints; and more readily help others follow Jesus by doing spiritual and corporal works of mercy (see Matthew 25 for corporal works of mercy, which include helping the hungry, thirsty and homeless) Spiritual works of mercy include: instructing the ignorant to help them learn that they need God to truly live; admonishing sinners so they will turn away from sin and seek God’s healing, forgiveness and mercy; counseling the doubtful to renew their trust in Jesus; comforting the sorrowful, so that they experience Jesus Christ’s healing presence; bearing wrongs patiently, as God will right all wrongs in time; forgiving injuries, as forgiveness leads to healing and spiritual growth (see Matthew 5:17-37); praying for the living and the dead, asking God to lead others to Heaven as we strive to follow Him

Jesus Christ has opened the path to Heaven for us He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, yesterday, today and forever He wants us to follow Him, to steer clear of Hell By His grace, may we follow Him and help others do the same, in our love for God and our neighbor

With peace and prayers in Christ,Fr. William

PLEASE NOTE!Please look for your contribution statement on the tables in the entrances of the church

Please only take your family’s envelope However, we would appreciate your assistance in spreading the word so that your family, friends and neighbors receive their envelope and reduce our cost to mail them Contact Katie at the parish office (723-4990) if your envelope is missing, you would like a detailed statement or have any questions

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEALOn February 22-23, Father William will lead the in-pew process for the Annual

Catholic Appeal Those who have not made a pledge by mail will be asked to do so at this time This appeal funds many ministries throughout the diocese and helps many in need through works of mercy Each household is asked to make a generous gift In doing so, please consider making a pledge, payable over six months Thank you for your support of our parish, the diocese and the work of the Church throughout the world

SAINT CLEMENT SCHOOL

ADULT EDUCATION: METANOIAMetanoia means conversion, but it is much more than that It

means to change, to repent, to turn, to think differently Metanoia is an ongoing process As Christians, we are to live a life of metanoia In the Season of Lent, we especially focus on our need for conversion, for metanoia, as God call us to “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” With the help of Fr Dave Pivonka, TOR, President of Steubenville University, we will reflect more deeply on how we need conversion to take place within our hearts and minds Jesus invites everyone to metanoia, to turn closer to Him, and He gives us the graces to do so We need only to have the desire and courage to change as He directs us

There will be two opportunities to take part in this 10-part, video-based study The first is on Tuesday nights, beginning this Tuesday, February 18, at 7 PM, and the second offering will be on Wednesday mornings after the 8:15 AM Mass, beginning this Wednesday, February 19 Sessions will be held in the parish office meeting room If you have any questions, contact Bill Manthe

ST. CLEMENT PARISH MEN’S RETREAT“RISE UP: Be A Man!” is the focus of our men’s retreat on

Saturday, March 7 For those who are able, the day will begin with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:00 AM, followed by the 8:15 Mass After Mass, the retreat will formally begin with a light breakfast in the dining hall, with the first speaker at 9:30 There will be three presentations in all, with ample time for reflection and prayer Lunch is included The day will wrap up around 2 PM There is NO COST to attend the retreat This is a great way to begin the Lenten Season – spending time with the Lord in prayer, and reflection Contact Bill Seyer at 608-988-6543 to register before March 7, if possible, or if you have any questions

FAMILY PROMISE NEWSOur next host week to assist families with children experiencing

homelessness is March 15-22 One area of concern that we have is filling the volunteer needs during the week Three years ago, Family Promise of Grant County first opened its doors to assist families and it’s been three years since we had our first sign-up for volunteers Since that time, we’ve had new people move into the parish who may have no idea what Family Promise is or know how they may become involved in this important outreach After the Masses on the weekend of February 22-23, Bill Manthe will be available to answer questions for everyone about Family Promise, and to explain the volunteer needs during our host week We’ll meet in the parish dining hall immediately after Mass If you have any questions, contact Bill at the parish office

LENT IS COMING!Lent is just ten days away, and like any important event or occasion,

we spend time planning and preparing in order to be ready Lent should be no different Lent is a sacred time to examine our lives and once more return to the Lord with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength How will your prayer be different during Lent? In what ways, or from what, will you fast? How will you “give alms” to the needy? In these days leading up to Ash Wednesday (February 26), please prayerfully consider how you will keep Lent this year

ST. CLEMENT MEN’S GROUP BEGINS THIS SUNDAY

All Men of our St Clement Parish (ages 18 and over) are invited to attend St Clement Men’s Group Spring sessions beginning this Sunday, February 16 We will continue the series “Bible Timeline; History of Our Father’s Plan” Doors open at 7 pm, with presentation beginning at 7:15 pm in the Dining Hall
