Observances for the Week
of December 18, 2016
Lord, in this holy season of prayer and song and laughter, we praise you for the great wonders you have sent
us: for shining star and angel's song, for infant's cry in lowly manger. We praise you for the Word made flesh
in a little Child. We behold his glory, and are bathed in its radiance.
Be with us as we sing the ironies of Christmas, the incomprehensible comprehended, the poetry made hard
fact, the helpless Babe who cracks the world asunder. We kneel before you shepherds, innkeepers, wisemen.
Help us to rise bigger than we are. Amen.

St. Vincent de Paul Jubilarian Award has never taken place
in our parish. Our conference would like to honor those
who have dedicated so much love and time to our mission.
The mission of the Jubiliarian Committee is to provide the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conferences with the format
for recognizing and honoring our retired and active
members who have devoted themselves to serving the
poor with a Jubilarian Crucifix. By wearing this Crucifix,
they will continue being a visible sign of God's love.
Those Vincentians who are active, inactive or retired and
meet the following criteria will be honored:
Vincentians who are seventy (70) years of age with five (5)
years of devoted service.
Vincentians who are sixty-five (65) years of age with ten
(10) years of devoted service.
We know the names of some of the most recent retirees
but want to be sure everyone is included. If you are a
Vincentian who meets the above criteria, please contact
either;
Beth Michelson - 602-741-4938 or
Irene Mirabito 480- 947-9455.
Thank you.

Catholic Church Days of Obligation
In the Catholic Church, Holy Days of Obligation are the days on which the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. They have also abstain from unnecessary works, "which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body." (canon 1247 of the Code of Canon Law). The list of Days of Obligation includes all Sundays in all countries. Some feasts, e.g. Easter, are always celebrated on Sundays, so they are always obligatory. The number of additional Days of Obligation vary between countries, from 1 in Hong-Kong to 10 in Vatican.

Christmas
Christmas is one of the most important days of the Church
year, second only to Easter itself. It is the feast of the
incarnation, the feast of God becoming flesh (the Latin
"in carne" means "enfleshment"). It is a uniquely Christian
teaching, the Divine choosing to become one of us.
Because of this belief, God is not only Transcendent, but
also wholly Immanent, Emmanuel (God-with-us). While
remaining Transcendent (meaning we must rise above our
present condition to reach Him), He is at the same time
Immanent (meaning He is with us as we rise toward Him).
Every Eucharist is like Christmas where the bread and wine
are transformed into His flesh, His Body and Blood, and,
in a sense, He is born anew on the altar.
The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the vigil
Masses on Christmas Eve and concludes on the Feast of
the Baptism of the Lord. During this season, we celebrate
the birth of Christ into our world and into our hearts, and
reflect on the gift of salvation that is born with him…
including the fact that he was born to die for us.
The Christmas tree and the Nativity scene are popular
symbols of the season and a tradition in many Christian
homes. It is also traditional to exchange Christmas gifts
with family and friends as a way to honor God the Father's
gift of his only son to the world. Having received the gift of
Christ, we naturally want to pass that gift along to our
loved ones.
