SAINT DAVID’S
Visions
JANUARY 2016
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the Kings and Princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flocks,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost
To heal the broken
To feed the hungry
To release the prisoner
To teach the nations
To bring Christ to all
To make music in the heart.
— Howard Thurman
May we be given the grace to bring the hope of Christmas alive
in the year ahead.

FEATURING SUPER FOOD & WINE MATCHES
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 6:00 PM At St. David’s Episcopal Church -
91 Kinnelon Road, Kinnelon NJ
Join us for a gourmet evening of great wine and great food, featuring five quality courses each
perfectly paired to a delicious but affordable wine. From the welcome glass through dessert
you will be guided through each pairing by our own wine enthusiast, Steve Kent, who has
tasted wines and visited wineries in dozens of countries over the last 30 years.
Experience the magic when the right wine matched with the right food enhances the enjoy-
ment of both. Learn how a pairing is done, how to select a great bottle of wine every time, and
the art of tasting wine – with food!
At this year’s event you will enjoy an artisanal wine, an exotic wine made from a grape that
most people have never heard of, gain a new appreciation for a wine nobody thought they
liked, and discover a great match for red wine and dark chocolate.
All this and restaurant quality food, and at a fabulous price. Can you imagine this low price at
a good restaurant for a great five course meal with a sampling of 6 great wines?
This time you won’t just dine or taste – you’ll learn to pair!
ALL ARE WELCOME - Reservations are a must! Deadline to purchase tickets is
January 31. They will be on sale January 10-31, after both services, or Monday-
Friday, 9-1, in the office. The dinner and wine tasting donation is $50 per person;

Budget Forum
The Budget Forum held on December 13th began with David introducing and thanking the members of the
Budget & Finance Committee who worked diligently to prepare the budget: Sondra Odian, Chair, Mary-
Esther Arther, Ed Horton, Steve Kent, Irene Williams, Chris Snyder and John Simonelli.
Copies of the 11/30/15 YTD financial statement were distributed, along with copies of the proposed 2016
budget* and an analysis prepared by Ed Horton of the diminishing cash reserves and investments over the pre-
vious 5- year period, plus a projection of these figures for the upcoming year.
John Simonelli explained that it was a ‘bare-bones’ budget with cuts made wherever possible, including sup-
ply clergy, and asked if there were any questions. One was raised about the increased FICA/SICA amount for
2016 vs. previous years, which was verified as correct following the meeting.
Julie Dolci reported on the success of the Adopt-A-Project program, which will officially end on
12/31/15. She also reported on the Ward J. Herbert Grants. In February we asked for and received $14,400 for
the upper roof, with St. David’s paying $28,000 with some endowment funds and some donations. In May we
asked for and received $24,000, with St. David’s paying $50,000 with some endowment funds and some dona-
tions. Another WJH Grant application is pending for submission on February 1st in which we are asking for
$11,500 for the rectory roof repair. If we receive this grant it will be put back into the endowment fund. So
all told we received $39,400 from the Diocese plus another $11,500 pending. Julie also noted that we will be
receiving a Bishop’s Congregational Emergency Fund (BCEF) Grant for rectory repairs which could be up to
$6,000.
John noted that with the completion of the rectory roof and repairs all of our major repair and maintenance
projects will have been completed.
Following the presentation there was plenty of opportunity for questions, and there being no objections the
proposed budget will go to the Vestry for their vote.
John Simonelli, Senior Warden
* N.B. Following the budget forum we signed an additional lease with the After-School Program for the
rental of the small skylight room, which will mean an additional rental income of $1,800 for January
through June ($300/month X 6 months), thereby reducing our 2016 deficit to $3,290.
UNITED THANK OFFERING
THE UNITED THANK OFFERING INGATHERING will take place at the services on
January 24. Bring the boxes you’ve been filling during 2015, use one of the special enve-
lopes available in the narthex, and take the box home with you to use for another year. You
don’t have a box? Help yourself! (Boxes are in the tract rack throughout the year.) Thank
you for your generosity!
ALTAR FLOWERS
THE 2016 FLOWER CALENDAR is posted at the foot of the balcony stairs. How often
during the year do we remember the death of a loved one, commemorate the birth of a
new baby, celebrate a special event? The weekly flower altar arrangements can be given
as memorials or thank-offerings—the cost is $40. The forms to be used are hanging with the
calendar—when completed, they should be put in the Parish Administrator’s mailbox.
Reminder—more than one person can sign up for a particular Sunday.
THE GENEROUS MEMBERS who contributed to the outreach projects—Prison Ministry, Strengthen Our
Sisters and North Porch—what a wonderful outpouring!
Special thanks to Dale Wilhelm for delivering to S.O.S. and to Pat Hodde who delivered to North Porch.
THE FAMILIES from the special Melody and Motion classes held on Small Business Saturday who donated a
box of canned food for the food pantry and gifts to Strengthen Our Sisters (and to Lee Moody for his extra-
heavy delivery to Boro Hall).
THE SANTAS who gave so generously to our “Gifts Cards for Christmas” program for our Outreach families.
THE SAINTS who met our commitment to St. Paul’s Shelter on December 15—cooks - Sondra Odian, Doris
Snyder, Joan Molee; drivers/servers - Bruce and Patty Watts.
CHRISTMAS DONATIONS TO THE PRISON MINISTRY
Doris Snyder writes: “On Thursday, December 17th a member of the Vestry from Grace Episcopal Church
Nutley picked up the donations given by the congregation of St. David’s Episcopal Church Kinnelon. The
next Monday I received a
lovely Christmas Card from the Rector of Grace Episcopal who leads the prison ministry for the Diocese. I
would like to share with you what she wrote:
Dear People of St. David’s Church,
Thank you so much for the sleigh full of toys for distribution to children whose
Parents are incarcerated or recently released. Everything is beautifully wrapped in
paper and prayer. God bless you all.
Rev Audrey Hasselbeck, Secretary of the Prison Ministry.”
Thank you all for making the Christmas of these children a little more richer and brighter.
Peace.
Doris Snyder
Heartfelt thanks to all for the Christmas wishes and gifts we received. We are truly blessed to be a part of this wonderful parish. David DeSmith and Jim Alden
EVERYONE who contributed toward the wreaths and
poinsettias that make St. David’s especially beautiful at
Christmas; the Altar Guild and helpers for their
dedicated work; the service participants;
Ian and the choir—all of whose service and devotion
added to the meaning of the season.
BUDGET FORUM DECEMBER 13
FAREWELL TO PAUL PUSECKER AND ELIZABETH BAMMEL (AND BIJOU) At or before the end of the year, Paul and
Elizabeth will be moving.
Elizabeth writes: “We want to be the first of
St David's "Virtual Members". That is, we
would like to be listed in the church directory
in a newly created section for us
and subsequent departing members that
we could stay in touch. -As when one leaves
home, one doesn't just walk away and forget
the people they have loved for a long time.
And we extend an invitation for members to
stop by and see us on their travels south-
ward.
Our cell numbers should stay the same.
And, as such, I won't be saying good-bye.
Much Love, Elizabeth”
Elizabeth and Paul were presented with a farewell plaque
displaying the parish photograph during their last service at St. David’s.
READERS CIRCLE BOOK GROUP
February 1, 2016
A LONG, LONG TIME AGO AND ESSENTIALLY TRUE,
by Brigid Posulka
Discussion Leader: Julie Dolci
On the eve of World War II, in a place called Half-Village, a young man nicknamed the
Pigeon falls in love with a girl fabled for her angelic looks. To court her, he offers up his
“golden hands” and transforms her family’s modest hut into a beautiful home, thereby
building his way into her heart. War arrives to cut short their courtship, delay their mar-
riage, and send the young lovers far from home, to the promise of a new life in Kraków.
Nearly fifty years later, their granddaughter, Beata, repeats their postwar journey, seeking
a new life in her grandmother’s fairy-tale city. But instead of the whispered prosperity of the New Poland, she
discovers a Kraków caught between its future and its past.
Whimsical, wise, beautiful, magical, and at times heartbreaking, A Long, Long Time Ago and Essentially True
weaves together two remarkable stories, reimagining half a century of Polish history through the legacy of one
unforgettable love affair. (Amazon Review)
St. David’s Readers Circle meets once each month, October through June, on the first Monday of the month.
Newcomers are welcome to join the Readers Circle at any time. For more information please contact Sondra
Odian.
Vestry Meeting Highlights – December 17, 2015
The Meeting began with a prayer led by Mike Roehrer, followed by Nancy Hammaker sharing her story of
finding a home in the Episcopal Church. A lively discussion followed, with Vestry members sharing what they
love about the Episcopal Church.
We discussed Part Two of Alan Roxburgh’s book “Joining God: Remaking Church, Changing the World” and
suggested that it would be something to share with the entire congregation, perhaps during Lent.
We discussed four suggestions brought to Vestry members by the congregation:
“Virtual membership” for folks who move away, including perhaps video sermons
The lack of heat in the restrooms
Making the entrance to the parking lot easier to see
Having a point person and clean-up crew for the annual beefsteak dinner
The Guiding Team discussed the need for an Outreach Committee to facilitate wider and more focused out-
reach to the community and David will be meeting with a small group to explore this further. They also dis-
cussed a possible ‘going local’ community experiment, and will be meeting in January to discuss the feasibil-
ity.
David asked for members of the congregation and community we need to thank.
We approved the Treasurer’s report for November as presented. Income and Expenses are pretty much on
track. We also reviewed the formatted financial reports that expand on the Treasurer’s report.
We reviewed and approved the proposed 2016 budget.
We approved the proposed slate of Vestry candidates who will be elected at the Parish Annual Meeting on
January 10th.
We discussed the possibility of additional rental income from the After School Program, who has shown inter-
est in renting the small skylight room as a study space.
We approved an opportunity for year-end contributions that was recommended by a parishioner.
As her term is ending Nancy Hammaker offered her reflections on having served on the Vestry
We amended and approved the church calendar for January. Respectfully submitted,
John Simonelli, Senior Warden
