From the Rector - Ready for Anything

Over the last year, a dedicated group of parishioners, led by Gail Freeman, have

been looking hard at how we can make our community and church building safer.

They’ve explored and made recommendations in several areas of emergency

preparedness, including medical, fire/evacuation, and intruder. Through the

generosity of Fred Madore, we now have an AED (automated external

defibrillator) in the Great Hall, and seven people trained to use it.

Being prepared to handle emergencies isn’t just prudent; it’s faithful to who we are

as followers of Jesus. We are called to be ready to serve whenever we’re needed,

and handling a medical or other emergency is one way to serve. That’s why we’re

having a fire drill on Sunday, October 6 at both services. With the assistance and

guidance of Kennebunk Fire & Rescue, we’ll be practicing how we can safely exit

the building in the event of an emergency. Instructions are in these pages and will

also be in the bulletin that Sunday and the Sunday before. This is a good thing; we

practice now so that if ever we do need to evacuate, we know what to do.

All of these preparations and talk

about safety cannot help but bring to

mind the dangers around us; we live

in an age where incidents of vio-

lence, even in religious settings, are

not unknown. We want to be safe in

this world, but we must not make

ourselves so “safe” that we cannot

do our ministry. It’s worth

remembering the words of the resurrected Christ: Do not be afraid. We can be

prudent, we can be cautious, but we are not afraid, not really, because we know the

deepest truth about this world is that God loves it, and all of us, desperately. All of

our work on preparing for emergencies comes out of being faithful to who we are

as Christians and who we are as the current stewards of this wonderful place called

St. David’s.

With gratitude for all you do and all you are, I am

Your brother in Christ,

Andrew

… we are not afraid, not really,

because we know the deepest

truth about this world is that God

loves it, and all of us, desperately.

Playgroup on Second

Thursdays!

Children and babies from St. David's who are

not yet in school (along with their caregivers)

are invited to join one another on the second

Thursday of each month from 9:45-10:30 at

Huntington Common for a playgroup. Children

will join in singing songs, reading stories, and

getting their wiggles out, while the residents

watch on and play simple games with us. Our

next playgroup is Thursday, October 10, and

children are invited to wear their costumes for

pre-Halloween fun! If you have questions or

would like to join in this ministry, please

contact Sara D'Angio White at 502-7742 or

On October 6, 2019, we will be practicing fire safety awareness and conducting fire drills during both

services. The following information will acquaint you with the activities for the drill, as well as what to do in

event of an actual fire.

Look to the members of the St. David’s Emergency Response Committee (name tags have red borders) for

instructions during any emergency. Please follow their directions - they have received training and have

researched and discussed efficient and safe procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency. In

addition, always follow directions from Fire Department personnel when they arrive on the scene.

As you will see from the CALMS acronym below, understanding and practicing how you will respond in a

fire before there is an actual fire is a smart and safe approach to escaping a fire.

C –consider and choose your exit

The following are available exits to the exterior:

When facing the altar, the double doors behind the choir;

The double doors through which you enter the church;

The single-entry door by the church offices.

A – access the exits

Locate your closest exit and leave by it. If you get to any double door first, push it fully back until the

arm engages in a locked open position

L – leave the church, leave your children

Exit the building calmly and promptly. Sunday School teachers and your children will be exiting

through the single exterior door located by their classroom. This is the shortest hall and you want your

children to go outside not toward the interior church looking for you. Additionally, we don’t want

adult bodies impeding their progress toward the outside. Let your children know that you will meet

them by the Evacuation Meeting Place sign in the parking lot.

M – meet in the parking lot

Proceed to the Evacuation Meeting Place sign posted at the rear of the parking lot. Gathering at this

spot can help us ensure all have evacuated.

S – stay at meeting place until all clear is given

The driveway is the single entry and exit to St. David’s and it must be kept clear until fire trucks and

emergency vehicles arrive to address the fire or during a drill. You will be told when it’s safe to

leave the St. David’s property or return to the sanctuary in the case of a drill.

11th Annual

Harvest Fair

Saturday, November 2

9AM-2PM

Now that the days are getting shorter and our company has all gone home, it’s time to turn our attention to

the Harvest Fair!! The various committees have been busy throughout the year in preparation for this big

event. Once again our offerings will include the silent auction, raffle baskets, baked goods, homemade jellies

and chicken pot pies, a Table of Treasures, Jewelry Table, Handmade Items Table,, delicious lunch, and live

music. This year we will be including a Tools & Technology table and once again we will be adding more

room to display our wares.

Like to bake? Many goodies are needed for the Bake Table.

Do you knit, crochet, embroider, sew, make home décor items, woodwork, paint, etc.? The

Handmade Items Table would be happy to offer your handiwork.

Are you creative? Put together a theme basket for the raffle.

Have some clean, slightly used items for the home that you wanted to part with? Donate them to the

Table of Treasures.

Want to help prepare and serve food? The luncheon crew could use your help.

Still have that power tool that you haven’t used since you got that sore arm? The Tools and

Technology Table could use it.

Enjoy talking to people? Consider staffing one of the tables on the day of the fair.

If you would like to share your time or talents or offer items to one of our tables, please contact Cathy,

Rick, or one of the committee co-chairs. Be sure to let your friends, family and neighbors know the date so

they can plan on attending this fun-filled event and experience the fellowship and enthusiasm that we share at

St David’s. We look forward to continuing to build on the fabulous success of last year and invite you to be

part of this team of dedicated workers. A list of committee chairs will be posted on the board in the Great

Hall and more information about the fair will be published as we get closer to the date. And be sure to read

the Messenger, Instant Messenger, and Sunday Bulletin for updates and committee specific needs.

Outreach News

Laundry Love

On Tuesday September 17, St. David’s held its 18th

consecutive, monthly Laundry Love event at Booms

Laundry in Biddeford. Here’s what happens on a

typical Laundry Love night:

St. David’s volunteers gather at Booms at 3:45 pm to

set up. A dozen guests are already in line, some

having arrived an hour earlier. We know most of our

guests. A few are homeless, some have their children

with them, many arrive by foot carrying their laundry

or hauling carts, but all come because Laundry Love

offers a chance to get their clothing and bedding

washed and dried for free. Laundromats are often

beyond the very limited budgets of our guests who

don’t own washers and dryers.

Following a prayer of thanksgiving for this ministry

of hope and love, the evening begins promptly at

4:00. Each guest is greeted, given a number, and

assigned a volunteer. Guests always handle their own

clothing. Volunteers help locate available machines

and then slide the requisite quarters into slots to get

the machines tumbling. By 5:30, Booms Laundry is

packed and bustling with energy - all the machines

are in use. By the time the last load is in the washer at

7:00, volunteers will have helped 30-35 households,

dispensed at least 1600 quarters ($400!), and

countless detergent pods and dryer sheets. Most

importantly, we have joined together with our guests

in one of life’s essential tasks: doing the laundry. In

these moments together, we have the opportunity to

experience each other’s humanity and our oneness.

On Laundry Love evenings, St. David’s also

provides:

Activities for children. Deanna McNamara,

Children’s Librarian at Biddeford’s McArthur

Public Library brings games, books and

puzzles to keep youngsters entertained.

Clothing from Kennebunk Cares Closet.

Guests can indicate their specific clothing

needs which are given to KCC to fill, and later

delivered personally to guests by St. David’s

volunteers.

Healthy snacks and drinks.

Special one-time services. At our June event,

for example, a U.S. Census Bureau

representative provided guests with

information and applications for employment

opportunities.

St. David’s Laundry Love could not happen without

so many organizations and individuals who see the

importance and potential of this special ministry: our

funders and our partners, our volunteers and our

guests, and most basically, the owners of Booms

Laundry. We are grateful to all.

Laundry Love is an expensive program to operate.

Each month, we spend $400 on washer/dryer costs

alone. Everything else is donated - laundry pods,

dryer sheets, set-up materials, food and water, etc.

The Outreach Committee is actively seeking funding

for 2020. We need your continued support at this

critical juncture.

Please mark offerings and rolled quarters “For

Laundry Love.” If you can donate laundry pods or

loose quarters, you will find containers near the

Outreach Bulletin Board in the Great Hall. Questions

or suggestions? Please contact Nancy Clinton at

[email protected]. Thank you!

You are invited to

join us for an evening

of Musical Theatre!

Presented by

parishioner Jacklyn

A. Belmonte, the

evening includes vocal selections from Broadway

classics as well as new shows that have made

their mark. Performers include vocalists Laura

Burch, Ryan Lane, and Suzanne Menard, with

Jacklyn A. Belmonte on Piano and Carl Menard

on Percussion.

St. David’s Great Hall will be set up “cabaret”

style, with tables and chairs. You are invited to

bring snacks as you please, with St. David’s

providing coffee and water. This musical

evening is presented through a free will donation.

We hope to see you there!

An Evening of Musical

Theater

One of the most important big “E” words in my life

is Episcopalian. It’s an identity which brings me a

great deal of joy. I love the liturgy, the Good News

of the gospel, the sermons, the celebration at the

table, the prayers, the music, (or not ... when Rite I is

celebrated), the people, the traditions, and the list

goes on and on. God, and the presence of Jesus

Christ, come to life and restore me and dwell in me

as an Episcopalian. These are all blessings which

make me a grateful big “E” Episcopalian.

At our last vestry, meeting Fr. Andrew had us

explore how we brought our faith to those outside the

doors of St. David’s. I jumped on the fact of our

many Outreach programs: Hands Across Our

Community, Soup Lunch, St. Elizabeth’s, and Seeds

of Hope. Others added Laundry Love, the Sock and

Lunch Box drive, and all the many ways we support

victims of disaster either globally, nationally, or

locally. But all these wonderful things that we as a

community of the faithful do as Outreach circled

around to another dreaded big “E” word:

Evangelism.

Our many efforts certainly were good and Christian,

but how had we brought Jesus Christ and the gospel

to those to whom we provided aid? Were they in

Episcopal churches across the country? The answer is

they aren’t; a sad statistic of decline. Why are we

Episcopalians so reluctant to talk about our faith with

others? Is it some kind of particular Episcopalian

properness or the idea that our relationship to Jesus

Christ is too personal to share with others? Perhaps

we are afraid that if we talk with those outside our

Episcopal tradition, people will be judgmental or

laugh or mix us up with those who profess their faith

in public arenas by knocking on the doors of our

homes. Maybe such honesty is just too scary.

Whatever the reason, the big “E” of evangelism is a

problem for many of us.

I know and believe there are people out there

searching for meaning beyond the day to day

business of living. There are spiritual people

yearning for spiritual relationships and communities.

As baptized Christians we are charged, and have

agreed, to find them; that big “E” evangelism. It was

in thinking about this I came up with my third big

“E”, the Evite, not in the computer-generated

form, but as a way of reaching out - the

combining of our Episcopalian faith and our call

to evangelism. “E”vite, (invite) a friend or

someone you know to be seeking a relationship

with God and Jesus to come to church. Someone

lonely? Evite. Ill or grieving? Evite. Seniors or

young families? Evite.

There is room in God’s kingdom for all; invite

someone to church and be there to welcome them.

St. David’s is a wonderful place to be on any

Sunday morning. Let’s not keep it a secret!
