Roer Estorgue

Dear Friends in St. Dominic The God of heaven Himself will help us succeed; therefore, we will arise and build! We will trust His Word and believe in the Sovereign Lord who always keeps His promises…… Nehemiah 2:20 The construction of our new parish life center is on progress. This new building will address the need of more than 2,350 families in the parish for whom the present parish hall is quiet insufficient in every respect. We pray that the Lord will bless this worthy project to provide activities for our Church Family and the families in the community that will promote growth, development, relaxation and enjoyment. May the Lord provide all of the wisdom, finances, and resources that we will need to build this new facility and that He would provide us adequate funding, competent professionals, and skilled laborers for the construction. On behalf of St. Dominic Church, I would like to thank you personally for your generous donations/contributions to our capital campaign to raise funds for this project. We do appreciate and thank you again for your investment in our parish community. Your gift is truly making a difference in our campaign that could go a long way. This week-end, we celebrate Father’s day! This day, millions across the world honor their dads and fatherly figures who have been there through thick and thin. This day is important because it makes for one fabulous opportunity to acknowledge and express gratitude to the dads/fathers who have relentlessly worked hard in providing for their children. But most important thing of all, it will help bridge the emotional gap, if any, between the children and their dads and will bring both closer to each other. To all fathers—Happy Father’s day! Every week during Mass we pray the Creed. The Creed sums up what we believe as Christians, what the Church teaches, what God has revealed to the world about himself and the purpose of our lives. Unfortunately, most of us have become so used to the Creed that we often fail to savor the delicious truths that it contains. This Sunday’s Gospel passage gives us an opportunity to do just that. Towards the beginning of the Creed we pray: We believe in one God, the Father almighty. Almighty is a synonym for all-powerful, omnipotent. That is our Lord; he alone is all-powerful; nothing is difficult for him. God teaches Job this lesson in the First Reading. Job has been complain-ing about all the bad things that have been happening to him. And God answers by reminding him that the Lord is master even of those bad things, that he controls and limits them according to his omnipotent wis-dom. The ocean, in the Old Testament, because of its mystery, power, and unpredictability, was often used as a symbol for evil and chaos. But God tells Job that he has set limits for it, and fastened the bar of its door. The Gospel gives us a close-up view of God's effortless control of the seemingly most uncontrollable forces on earth: with just a word, he makes the wind and the sea obey. Notice how St Mark mentions both the wind and the sea. The sea stands for the realm below the earth, below mankind's dwelling place. The wind stands for the sky, the realm above the earth. And Jesus, the almighty Lord in whom we believe, is master of them all. Sincerely yours in Christ Rev. Roger Estorque

THE WIND AND THE SEA

L iving along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the

advice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” Peo-ple who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

W hen you are thinking about traditions in the Church, 1563 is a “watershed” year. The

Council of Trent began a reform of the liturgy that put an end to old practices and set many of our present practices in place. For the first time, engaged people were absolutely required to appear before their parish priest, and to exchange consent in his presence along with two witnesses. To this day, Catholics are obliged to this form, namely: to marry another Catholic in the presence of a priest (or deacon) and two witnesses, unless dispensed from the law. The Council really didn’t forbid customs and ceremonies that added life to the celebration, but the mood of the times was dark and somewhat austere. Practices like the blessing of the marriage bed or using a canopy for the nuptial blessing started to fade away, as did the custom of bringing the presents for the couple to the church and the addition of fiddlers and jugglers to the procession. The Council of Trent tried to preserve local customs, but the long term effect was to standardize celebrations everywhere in the world.
