209 Page Two Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 NOTES FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Volumes have been written

concerning the revelation of St. Paul in our second reading today. “A thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated.” What was this thorn in Paul’s flesh? Was it an illness like shingles? Or was it something psychological, such as an annoying coworker or threats from an enemy? Was it depression? Was it a problem with anxiety? No one knows what it was. Many have surmised, conjectured, what may have been Paul’s problem, but the truth is, no one knows.

The only thing we do know is that Paul didn’t like it. In our reading today he says, “three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me”. I would venture to guess that if we had a problem like Paul many of us wouldn’t give up after three times. Why only three times? Perhaps, because Paul got an answer to his prayers, it brought spiritual relief, but not physical relief. “The Lord said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness’.” It certainly wasn’t the answer Paul wanted, but it was the answer he received.

All of us endure many hardships. As we look at the crosses and the thorns in our own lives, whatever they might be, we must admit that we are frail. We all would like to think we’re the Marlboro Man, that we can handle anything that comes our way. But, truth be told, we often are driven to despair because we won’t admit we are weak. All of us are weak. When we admit we are weak, it is then that the grace of Christ can help. The grace of Jesus Christ sustains us in good times and in bad, but we only realize it when things go wrong. We all must agree with Saint Paul’s advice. “When I am weak, then I am strong.” Let us pray for the grace of submission to Christ and the wisdom to admit that He, and He alone, can save us.

God bless you, Fr. Murphy

Tuesday evenings from 7:30 – 8:30 we gather with men from surrounding parishes to read, pray and discuss the readings and Gospel for the coming week. How is His Word relevant to us, as men, in today’s world? Share how you still say YES to God in

your daily life. Books are provided. We meet in St. Bernadette convent chapel. Call Deacon John for further information at 610-742-2676.

Registration for Parish Religious Education Program PREP formerly CCD

Did You Know St. Dorothy Parish strongly encourages parishioners to make Weekly Offering utilizing your “Bill Pay” feature. The advantage to the parish is that “Bill Pay” provides a steadier and predictable cash flow. The advantage to parishioners is the convenience of avoiding last minute check preparation, and the ability to direct Bill payments to occur soon after the receipt of your paycheck (rather than always making offerings on a Sunday), for example: once a month, bi-weekly, weekly, etc. Join the growing number of parishioners who are taking advantage of the benefits of using this popular feature.
