WHO ARE WE? Who are “we” today as we sing “We are his people, the sheep of his flock” in the responsorial psalm? It is very easy to think that it is just us, at this Mass, or just the members of this parish or diocese, or perhaps we are thinking it is all Roman Catholics in the United States. But “we” are much larger and broader than that. If you take a globe or atlas in your hand, it would be difficult to point to any place on land where “we” aren’t singing this psalm today. Not only that, but “we” are the saints who survived the great time of trial, as described in Revelation’s reading today. And “we” continue to grow not just in numbers but in complexity and diversity as the work begun by Paul and Barnabas in today’s first reading continues. But, even though who “we” are, the flock of the Lord, is almost beyond our ability to comprehend, we all hear the voice of Jesus Christ, our one and only shepherd, as we continue through the Easter season to follow him faithfully.

FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY

Chuck and Cathy Cecil continue serving this important ministry which helps to feed several families in our North Lake Tahoe community. Collection of nonperishable foods on the last weekend of each month helps support this mission. The community and visitors of St. Francis have been very generous in serving those who are struggling and hungry, and we are so grateful! The outpouring of love and gratitude from those receiving your gifts is immense. If it is more convenient for you to make a monetary donation, you may enclose it in an envelope and drop it off at the parish office downstairs. Checks may be made payable to St. Francis of Assisi, earmarked for “Food for the Hungry.” You can also contribute through the Online Giving program at our website. (sftahoe.org) If you have any questions, please feel free to call Cathy or Chuck at 622-3378.

REMEMBER, TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote Last summer, Catholic Stewardship Consultants conducted our first-ever parish survey. Our purpose in doing the survey was to assess our strengths and weakness. One of the areas in definite need of improvement was our Adult Faith Formation. Many parishioners struggle making time for the formation programs currently functioning—such as “Why Catholic” or “Small Church Communities”— because of other community activities, children’s sports or school activities.

Fifty-nine percent of those who completed the survey wanted some type of Sacred Scripture Study. Last week, we began a six-week series entitled The Bible, a series that aired previously on the History Channel during Lent. I would like to encourage you to consider participating in viewing and discussing this program, the highest-rated show in the network’s history. The series contains five episodes which focus on the Old Testament and five on the New Testament. The popularity of this series was so successful that it beat out the other prime time network shows. We meet on Tuesday evenings

from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. More information on this Scripture study is found on page 3 of this week’s bulletin. While scripture scholars have different takes on the Bible, most of them agree that telling the story of The Bible in a video miniseries is a huge challenge. Realistically, capturing the centuries of both secular and religious history within a few hours is an ambitious endeavor. When watching the series, please be aware that the director and editors made all of their interpretive choices about which Bible stories to tell, and they give us their version when filming the scenes. Hopefully, this selective option will stimulate your curiosity and further enable you to examine various Scriptural stories in order to deepen your personal understanding of God’s revelation of the history of salvation. It is said that this is the first of many upcoming biblical-themed projects for Hollywood. Director Steven Spielberg is currently working on “Moses,” a production which is to be shown next year. The following paragraph “Handing out Hope” has been written by parishioner Debbie Larson in hopes of encouraging you to read a very interesting book on Catholicism. I personally found the book to be inspiring and motivating.

“You are welcome to a complimentary copy of bestselling author Matthew Kelly’s Rediscover Catholicism, located in the back of the church or in our office. This book landed in the palm of one of our parishioners while visiting a friend in Southern California, whose parish was giving out the book. Rediscover Catholicism is part of a Dynamic Catholic Book Program created to revitalize Catholics across the country. The books cost the parish only $3 each. If you, after reading the book, agree it would serve St. Francis’ welcoming mission to distribute this book free to our visitors this summer, please consider a donation towards such a ministry. People come to Tahoe for renewal. Wouldn’t it be great if they could take part of that spiritual refreshment home with them?”
