Y, misericordiosamente,
también describe con gran claridad sus
premios.
THE WORKINGS OF
THE SPIRIT
Anyone who has seen a loved one off to a new
adventure knows how difficult it is to rejoice, even
when we are reasonably optimistic about their future.
So, we can imagine how difficult it must have been
for the disciples to rejoice in Jesus’ announced
departure. Today’s Gospel is part of Jesus’ Last
Supper discourse, recorded only by John. Jesus
announces shocking news. He must go to the Father,
and they should rejoice in this. To help them through
this, Jesus gives his disciples his give of peace and
promises an Advocate.
From our privileged position in history, we can see
that all that Jesus promises comes to pass. The
Church has grown and still exists on
this earth because of the abiding Spirit.
But living by the Spirit and entering
into the peace of Christ is no small
task. Jesus doesn’t promise the apostles
a rose garden. He is realistic about the
costs of discipleship. And, mercifully,
he is also clear about its rewards.

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote You are invited this Sunday (May 5th) to stop by the parish house between 1 and 3 pm to wish Fr. Bob Daigle a
Happy 80th Birthday and a Blessed 50th Anniversary of his ordination.
It all started back on April 17th, 1933, when “Once upon a time, in the remote city of
Port Arthur, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Daigle became the proud parents of their
firstborn, whom they named Robert.” (They would eventually have 5 more children.)
When the excited young parents held their newborn Bobby in their loving arms, I’m
sure they never envisioned that their number-one son would hear the call and accept
the challenge to become a priest. In those days (fifty years ago) it was an honor to
have your son, brother, nephew, cousin or friend become a priest. It took a lot of
courage and self-sacrifice, just as it does today, for a young person to cooperate with
the call to follow Christ.
Bob graduated from high school and served 4 years in the Navy as a dental tech before entering the seminary in 1957.
When a man left for the seminary in that era, he literally left the world behind as was clearly symbolized in the
fortress-like seminaries. You knew exactly what you were getting involved in and exactly what was expected of you
as a priest. As a seminarian, young Bob had youthful ideas, traditional values and a common vision with a shared
system of Catholic philosophy and theology. At ordination, all priests were considered to have all the answers to any
dogmatic or moral issues.
Fr. Bob was ordained for the diocese of Houston, Texas in 1963 at the age of thirty. He ministered to several Houston
parishes and was eventually appointed as the Diocesan Director for the hearing-impaired for six-and-a-half years.
However, the need for Catholic Naval Chaplains was so great during the 1960s that Fr. Bob was recruited back into
the Navy. Once his 20 years of Naval Service was completed, he retired as a commander and remained in San Diego,
California.
As many know, Fr. Bob has a great appreciation for the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church. Because of this, he
learned and celebrates the liturgical rites of both the Byzantine and Maronite Rites of the Catholic Church. Fr. Bob
especially loves sharing his historical knowledge of these liturgies when visiting with us here at St. Francis of Assisi.
In his book Holy Fools, Edward Hayes - one of my favorite authors - encourages his readers to deepen their faith and
their trust by “celebrating anniversaries.” He refers to anniversaries as “Do you remember when?” occasions. When
we come together for anniversaries or birthdays we just naturally recall and “remember when…!”
There is a story about Frank Lloyd Wright whereby he was asked in life
which one of his works he thought was the best. He replied: “The next
one.” We can also ask Fr. Bob which anniversary or birthday was his best
and I’m sure he would reply “The next one.” Let’s not take a chance!
Please join in and help to make sure Fr. Bob does indeed think BOTH his
Fiftieth Anniversary and Eightieth Birthday are the best by celebrating with
him this Sunday afternoon.
On behalf of the Parish community of St. Francis of Assisi, we extend to
you Fr. Bob, “a Happy Birthday and Blessed Anniversary.”

Él me respondió: "El siguiente", podemos

Issues of Peace and Justice As we continue to hear again
the great evangelizing events in the Acts of the Apostles, we might not
always be making the connection between the lives of these earliest
Christians and our own. Do we who occupy the pews each week and hear
the Gospel proclaimed realize that we, too, have received the gift of the
Holy Spirit and that the Spirit “will teach [us] everything” we need to
know? The Vatican II document Decree on the Apostolate of Lay People
stresses the vital role of the laity. “In the organism of a living body no member is purely passive;
sharing in the life of the body each member also shares in its activity” (#2). Ours is the great task of
renewing life on earth! “That women and men, working in harmony should renew the temporal
order and make it increasingly more perfect: such is God’s design for the world…All that goes to
make up the temporal order – personal and family values, culture, economic interests, the trades and
professions, political institutions, international relations, and so on, as well as their gradual
development -- all these are not merely helps to humanity’s last end, they possess a value of their
own, placed in them by God, both in themselves or as parts of the integral temporal structure…. Lay
people ought themselves to take on as their distinctive task this renewal of the temporal order” (#7).
The document goes on to point out the two great needs of the world, the need for great charity and
the need for true justice, with the reminder that “what is already due in justice is not to be offered as
a first in charity (#8). The USCCB affiliate Justice for Immigrants reminds us of the urgent need for
Catholics to advocate on behalf justice for the 11 million undocumented persons in this country:
http://justiceforimmigrants.org.
caridad (no. 8).
