PENTECOST 3
May we always keep in mind that this parish exists to give glory to God in all we do and for each one of us to be sanctified in our lives. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
From the Pastor
The Tower of Babel forms an important backdrop for understanding the significance of Pentecost. The Acts of the Apostles notes that representatives of all nations were present to witness the apostle’s preaching (Acts 2:5) and notes their ironic bewilderment at being able to understand one another’s “languages” or “tongues” (see Acts 2:6). Moreover, the Acts of the Apostles then enumerates a lengthy list of the nations from which those who experience the miracle are drawn (Acts 2:9-11), almost as if deliberately alluding to (although abbreviating) the so-called “Table of Nations” in Genesis 10. By placing the Feast of Pentecost against the backdrop of the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and the gift of “tongues”, the ancient Christian tradition that views the event of Pentecost as nothing less than the undoing of the Tower of Babel
that will begin the reunification of the human family through the mission and witness of the apostolic Church is reflected. Babel helped explain how a civilization focused on itself instead of God led to its own destruction and scattering. This conflict is symbolized in the confusion of tongues and the failure of a temple meant only for man's dwelling. At Pentecost, the Spirit gathers those scattered and unifies them into the Church under Jesus' name without eliminating diversity. The Holy Spirit translates tongues and builds up the people as the Temple where the Divine resides.
What can be said for this last year, but wow! I can’t believe all that we have been through and yet we made it to another completion of an academic year. A huge shout out to our amazing Principal, Beth Bartolotta, for all her leadership in our Pre-School, Elementary School and Parish School of Religion. I can remember last year, right before spring break when everything was just unfolding and Mrs. Bartolotta told me she was going to send computers home with the students just in case something happened. Well….the rest is history as they say. Fortunately, SFA School was already prepared in some ways for virtual learning because of the foundation that has been laid with Mrs. Bartolotta’s vision. I encourage you to watch her state of the school address to learn more. For a link to the State of the School Address and to read a note from Mrs. Bartolotta, see page 6. So we end another year and thank God for all the graces and blessings even among the trials and tribulations. Thanks goes out also to our incredible teachers, staff and catechists for all they did. I can’t begin to enumerate the fabulous ways they stepped up and made learning at SFA Schools still happen. Thanks to all our parishioners and parents for their constant support. Let us have gratitude in our hearts for all that God has done for us. The last day of school is May 28 beginning with an all school Mass at 7:45 a.m. Today is the end of the PSR year. Let us pray that God will bless us over the summer.

The Archdiocese of St. Louis joyfully announces the ordination of Rev. Mr. Mitchell Baer to the Sacred Priesthood through the invocation of the Holy Spirit and the imposition of hands by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Mitchell T. Rozanski, Archbishop of St. Louis. Saturday, May 29th, 2021 at 10 a.m. | Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis | Open to the public, seating limited Then on Sunday, June 6th, Fr. Mitchell will be at SFA to celebrate our 11 a.m. Mass with us, with a reception in the courtyard to follow. Come celebrate with us!
If you wish to give Fr. Baer a gift, a monetary gift is best so that he can purchase the clerical items he needs. If you write out a check, you should make it with his new title, Rev. Mitchell Baer. You might also consider a spiritual gift, such as offering a holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament in Eucharistic Adoration.

It is hard to believe that we’ve reached the final week of school and the final week of PSR! While it’s been quite an unusual year, I am extremely grateful to God for helping to keep us safe this year. School is just so much more effective in-person. What an amazing parish, parents, students, and staff we have! Thank you for your support, patience, perseverance and flexibility as we’ve navigated these tricky times. Here is a link to this year’s State of the School Address. It will give some highlights about the day school and some changes that are in the works. https://www.wevideo.com/view/2184861911
We congratulate our 8th graders who will be graduating on Thursday, May 27th. Their last day of school is on May 26th. We can’t wait to hear about the wonderful things to come in high school. Here’s a picture of them on their final Field Day, which they helped to plan.
Our preschoolers will also graduate on the morning of May 27th. The rest of the school will enjoy their last day on May 28th with a noon dismissal – so the parking lot will be a little crazy for noon Mass arrival and school dismissal – beware. We had some students and their families join Father Staley for the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants Mass and Rosary at the Cathedral Basilica last weekend. Please continue to pray for the unborn and for those facing an unplanned pregnancy.

We have reached the final week of PSR. We’ve really focused on trying to have a more interactive experience for our students this year. Thank you to our catechists, students, and parents for being so flexible and patient as we’ve tried to balance in-person and virtual learning. With the time constraints of PSR, we will only have in-person learning and the home-school parent-led program next year. TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO REGISTER FOR THE 21-22 PSR PROGRAM WITHOUT A LATE FEE. Please see the website to register: www.sfastl.org Check out some of these pictures of faith formation in our PSR program and have a wonderful summer!

With Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS), the liturgy makes more sense, the scripture comes to life, and we build a relationship with our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ.
Learning to use the Bible and to find and interpret scripture is a skill leaned in CGS. Students use materials to help them remember key Gospel passages.
Both in-person and virtual learning were offered this year. Videos used through Formed and Chosen help relate faith learning to everyday life.
Videos, use of Bibles and scripture, textbooks, and discussion circles helped to make learning more interactive and meaningful.
Faith sharing circles allow deeper discussion regarding concepts, beliefs, and experiences.

Please remember to pray for all those receiving a shawl or blanket. Do you knit or crochet? Lots of yarn has been donated for the making of prayer shawls. Stop by the rectory if you’re interested in picking up yarn to make prayer shawls.

When SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital opened its doors as the nation’s first free-standing Catholic pediatric hospital, a promise was made to the community that any child in need of care would be welcomed, whether their parents could afford to pay for care or not. That promise still holds true today. We rely on the generosity of our friends in the faith community to help uphold our mission of faith-filled health care services, delivered by some of the region’s best caregivers: Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God. St. Francis of Assisi Parish, please join us in helping make miracles possible by making a gift during Glennon Sunday weekend, June 5-6, online at glennon.org. On behalf of our patients and families, may God bless you for providing hope, healing, faith and compassion to every child who walks through the doors at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon.
