SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER 3

May we always keep in mind that this parish exists to give glory to God in all we do and for each one of us to be sanctified in our lives. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.

From the Pastor

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

Today, the Second Sunday of Easter, is Divine Mercy Sunday. Our Gospel reading from St. John is often called the story of “Doubting Thomas” but the passage involves so much more than the encounter with the skeptical apostle. It is rich with lessons of Christ’s mercy to all, including an encour-aging word from our Lord especially for us, His modern-day disciples.

While Thomas traditionally takes all the bad rap for his doubts, we see that none of the Apostles were at their best when Christ first appeared to them after His resurrection. They were actually in hiding, cowering behind a locked door, paralyzed by fear and doubt.

But Jesus appeared right in their midst in spite of the lock on the door. Was it to rebuke them for their lack of faith? Quite the contrary.

He comes on a mission of mercy. He comes to offer them peace and the restoration of their relationship with Him. And even more, He commissions them to become ministers of His mercy, by giving them authority to forgive sins. At that moment Christ gives to all of us the supreme gift of mercy — the sacrament of Reconciliation. What a precious and powerful gift!

This Sunday is a perfect time to reflect on how well we make use of this gift. Do we really appreciate its healing power? Could we become better stewards of this gift by going to Confession more often? We must also reflect on how well we extend mercy to others as Jesus did to Thomas that day.

Let’s commit ourselves to becoming faithful disciples and stewards of Christ’s mercy. We will be those very ones to whom Jesus gave a “shout out” during His encounter with Thomas: “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” — in His merciful love.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

This weekend we begin our campaign for the Annual Catholic Appeal. Each year, the Appeal is one way we say I Believe – offer our yes to God – by sharing our gifts with others. Please prayerfully consider making a gift after Mass this weekend or next. Your contribution will help strengthen ministries and programs like marriage preparation, pro-life efforts, outreach for the poor and needy, as well as our Seminarians and vocation work. Our Parish also benefited from a grant to help make improvements to our facilities.

Approximately 91 cents of every dollar raised goes back into the community in the form of direct services. None of the money raised by the Annual Catholic Appeal is used to defend or settle criminal or civil lawsuits related to the clergy abuse scandal.

Our Parish ACA goal is $93,940. No gift is too small. Even if you cannot make a pledge, please sign your card so we know you have considered the ACA. This will alleviate follow up phone calls and letters. It will also contribute to our participation goal.

Visit archstl.org/aca to learn more about supported ministries and agencies and to view a brief video about those who benefit from the Appeal. Thank you for your support and know that I am praying for you and your loved ones daily.

DYNAMIC CATHOLIC, ALIVE!

Do we reflect Christ to others?

In the Gospel, Thomas says to the other Apostles, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” Later, when Jesus appears to the Apostles, Jesus rebukes Thomas, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” We all know people like Thomas who need evidence to believe something. This is one of the reasons it is essential for us to allow everyone we meet to see the evidence of God working in our lives. Have you ever met someone that exudes the love, joy, and peace of Jesus in everything they do? People like this are contagious, because everyone wants what they have. They reflect Christ to others. If we all could strive to allow Christ to shine through us we would be able to give all those like a Thomas a glimpse of what they are seeking. This week would be a good time to ask the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts and help us to allow Christ to shine through us. archstl.org/live-the-faith

Weekly Reflection:

““Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’” - John 20:21

Peace – the first gift of the risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent the apostles out into the world, so too, He sends us. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be grateful and generous. Look for opportunities to share His peace, not only within our local parish boundaries, but outside of them as well. In giving, we receive the peace of Jesus Christ.

Food for the Hungry Challenge

The annual Food for the Hungry Challenge is running through April 30th. All the money collected will go to our food pantry. The need for food continues to grow as we are getting more requests for help daily.

We will provide special envelopes for the challenge. They will be on the food baskets at all entrances to the church. We ask that you make your check payable to St. V incent de Paul Society and mark in the memo line Food Pantry. We also ask that you continue to donate food to our pantry.

As you might know the State of Missouri has a Food Tax program. Every dollar you donate they will give you 50% off your tax liability. For example if you give $200 you will get $100 off your taxes owed. This is a win-win situation for both you and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. We will provide you with a tax form at the end of the year.

We want to thank you for all your help in the past and also in the future. If you have any questions please contact our treasurer Jim Hahn at 314-892-2392. Thank you again for your continued support.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER 7

Congratulations to the following who were Confirmed and received their First Holy Eucharist at the Easter Vigil; Megan Rolwes, Tim McKinnis, Steven Iverson, and Kristen Kohlberg. Please also congratulate Lily Huffhines who was baptized and who also received her First Communion and Jacqueline Shafer who was baptized. Welcome to the Catholic Church!

To receive the sacraments is truly an incredible gift but they are not received without proper preparation through formation and prayer. This happens as a result of generous and loving sponsors and catechists who journey with candidates and catechumens as they prepare.

We are truly thankful to the following sponsors who walked with this year's RCIA class; Melissa Loscheider, Therese McKinnis, Don Kaag, and Judy Przyzycki. Thank you also to Lynn Crecilus who served as RCIC catechist and to the RCIA team Vivian Knipp, Terry Ackermann, and the RCIA Coordinator, Linda Pudlowski. Thank you also to all parishioners, friends, and family who've supported the class from a distance through prayer!

If you have ever considered being on the RCIA team or being a sponsor, please let us know. We are already beginning to plan for next year's RCIA class.

First Friday Devotion Reminder

This devotion, Friday, May 3rd, is associated with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The devotion involves receiving Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays of the month. These devotions are performed on consecutive months for the particular intention of reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This devotion calls on the faithful to “stand in the gap” by doing penance for sinners, and it gives a special promise of Divine assistance at the hour of death; that is, the promise of dying in a state of grace and therefore obtaining heaven.

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque received visions of our Lord and His Sacred Heart from 1673-1675. During these apparitions to St. Margaret Mary, our Lord made promises that are the basis for the First Friday devotions we celebrate to this day. Our Lord promised these blessings to those who practice devotion to his Sacred Heart:

Promise #5: I will abundantly bless all their undertakings.

Promise #6: Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and Infinite Ocean of mercy.

Doubting, stubborn, weak Thomas

Everyone knows the expression, “doubting Thomas.” This is among the most famous passages in the New Testament where a doubting, stubborn, weak apostle, Thomas, outright refuses to acknowledge that the Lord has risen from the dead unless he sees him for himself, sees the wounds of crucifixion, and touches the flesh of Jesus. Unless “I can place my fingers in the wounds,” he exclaims, “I will not believe.”

He wanted proof. As we all do at one time or another. It is a weak but all too human response. Saying I Believe is not always as easy and simple as it might seem.

Believing in the Resurrection of Jesus, the eternal presence of the living God, is a lifelong response by each Christian. Sometimes our faith is strong, sometimes weak. Nonetheless, all that we do is a reflec-tion of our faith . . . in times of doubt, stubbornness and weakness. Through it all, a life of giving is the preeminent centerpiece of the Christian life. This means giving ourselves to others, sharing our blessings and gifts, and designating part of our wealth to help others. Renewing an annual commitment to the Annual Catholic Appeal can be an important part of a declaration of faith.

We seek the grace to overcome our doubt, stubbornness and weakness, just like one of the twelve hand-picked founders of the Catholic Church – St. Thomas.
