Monday — Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We are encouraged to “Sing a new song to the Lord” in this weekend’s responsorial psalm. From the first reading we learn of an experience by Peter that opened him to a new way to sing to the Lord. He and a group of Jewish believers witnessed the Holy Spirit bestowing the gift of tongues on a family of Gentiles. Since Jews considered Gentiles unclean, Jews were forbidden to associate with Gentiles. That the Holy Spirit would be at work in non-Jews was perplexing to the Jewish disciples, yet Peter allowed the Gentiles to be baptized.

In the Gospel, Jesus uses the words “Remain in my love”. To remain in his love the disciples must keep his commandments, and his commandment is to love one another. In the early church, decisions such as “who to baptize” and “what was required to be baptized (circumcision for males, obedience to Jewish purity rituals, etc)” were made. The actions of Peter and later Paul tell us that “remaining in my love” sometimes meant being open to new people, to new per-spectives, to new ways of singing. The command to “Love one another” doesn’t mean “Love those who look like you, or dress like you, or speak in the same voice as you.” Just as Peter and then Paul had to open themselves up, so must we con-sider the ways in which the Spirit is calling us to “remain in my love.” It may just demand that we work outside our comfort zone, being open to new people and new situations.

“SING A NEW SONG TO THE LORD.”

Sixth Sunday of Easter

Sixth Sunday of Easter

“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you…. You are

my friends if you do what I command you.” - John 15:12,14

“God is love” proclaims this weekend’s second reading. Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia (AM) reflects on 1 Corinthians 13 to clarify the meaning of these three simple words. 1 Corinthians 13:4 says that love is patient. Pope Francis says that patience includes “the quality of one who does not act on impulse and avoids giving offense…. God’s ‘patience,’ shown in his mercy towards sinners, is a sign of his real power (AM #91).” God is beyond impulses and the associated need to offend others simply because it is believed that others deserve to be offended. This is power and this is mercy. Because patience is mercy based on a very real power, patience is not something that weak people do. Patience is not a resignation to abuse, ag-gression, or manipulation (AM #92). Patience is something else. When it comes to humanity being patient, the Pope notes that patience “takes root when I recognize that other people also

have a right to live in this world, just as they are. It does not matter if they hold me back, if they unsettle my plans, or annoy me by the way they act or think, or if they are not everything I want them to be. Love always has an aspect of deep compassion that leads to accepting the other person as a part of this world, even when he or she acts differently than I would like

(AM #92).” At this point it might be tempting to think of the patience that is part of love to be mainly a passive thing. We have all kinds of misgivings and frustrations with others and in the name of patience we are just supposed to push down these feelings and hope they do not explode. This is not what the Pope means by patience. Patience involves compassion or putting ourselves in the shoes of someone else. Compassion is the enemy of ego-ism. Our own impressions are part of the story and they do not automatically correct the ways other people follow, ways frus-trating to us. Compassion heals us even as it looks out for oth-ers. Once some of this compassion-driven healing takes place in us and we do not simply push down our problems with other people, another aspect of love is possible. Love, 1 Corinthians

13:4 says, is also kind. The kind person is “a good person, one who shows his goodness by his deeds …. love is ever ready to be of assis-tance (AM #93).” Love “allows us to experi-ence the happiness of giving, the nobility and grandeur of spending ourselves unstintingly, without asking to be repaid, purely for the pleasure of giving and serving (AM #94).”

The Pope’s reflections on love as described in 1 Corinthians 13 continue. What is offered here is just a small example of one

way to meditate on love. The Church has 2,000 years of ways to meditate on love. The topic is truly large and it intertwines with all kinds of other rich terms such as hope and faith. The time we spend in church, helping others, and in personal prayer help us understand love even as the tremendous number of pos-sibilities for reflection on love tell us that we are barely scratching the surface. “God is love” the second reading tells us. There is a lot packed into just three words.

The quiz on this weekend’s liturgy offers all kinds of details to ponder. When it comes to something as plentiful as Scrip-ture, even the details can be a feast. Next weekend’s quiz will be a little different. It’s hard to fit all the riches into a single format. 1. Sunday’s first reading was taken from the Book of a) Isaiah b) Revelation c) Ezekiel d) Acts of the Apostles

2. and talked about the activity of a) Peter b) Paul c) Abraham d) Moses

3. who ordered that people should be

a) clothed b) given food to eat c) baptized d) all of the above

4. The Responsorial refrain was

a) He has remembered his kindness b) He has done wondrous deeds

c) The Lord has revealed to the nations . . . d) none of these

5. and the verses were taken from Psalm

a) 98 b) 154 c) 190 d) 206

6. The Second Reading was from the first Letter of a) Paul b) Peter c) John d) James

7. and talked about a) love b) baptism c) faith d) all of these

8. The Gospel reading, taken from

a) Matthew b) Mark c) Luke d) John

9. was about Jesus, who was speaking a) to his disciples b) in a synagogue c) in parables d) none of these

10. saying such things as

a) “Love one another, as I love you”

b) “If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love”

c) “Whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you”

d) all of these
