JUNE 30, 2013 / THIRTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME 30 DE JUNIO 2013 / DECIMOTERCER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI CATHOLIC CHURCH 701 Mt Rose Hwy. ¿O a nosotros? THE PRICE OF FREEDOM Today’s readings promise that if we could escape from the shackles of our attachments we would be happier, free, more peaceful. Luke’s Gospel begins, “When the days for Jesus’ being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem.” Aware of the opposition and danger awaiting him, Jesus went forward. Naturally, brave people volunteered to join him. But Jesus cautioned them. Could they give up their attachments to home and possessions, friends and family, conventional responsibilities? A tough challenge, but not unprecedented. Centuries before, Elijah had criticized Elisha for wanting time just to kiss his parents good-bye before following Elijah. Just where would such a path take Elisha? Or Jesus’ followers” Or us” Paul tells us, “For freedom Christ set us free so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.” The outcome is freedom, but if the requirements don’t give us pause, then maybe we’re not paying close enough attention.

¿O a nosotros?

THE PRICE OF FREEDOM Today’s readings promise that if we could escape from the shackles of our attachments we would be happier, free, more peaceful. Change isn’t easy and neither is renovating a church! But change is what we had to do if we wanted our Church to thrive in the future. Nearly 50 years ago, the founding members and visitors of our parish community made financial sacrifices to build St. Francis of Assisi overlooking one of God’s most magnificent creations. Although we are mesmerized by the beauty of Lake Tahoe and the quiet reverence of our Church, its aging structure needed a renovation. So, over 6 years ago, we asked parishioners for their creative ideas to help us envision a welcoming

Sacred Space that would promote a deeper love for God, neighbor and self. This weekend, we celebrate the results of your self-sacrificing gifts. Words not only seem, but are inadequate to express the gratitude for what we have accomplished within this short time. The church was rebuilt in ten months, and within the year, enough money was pledged to pay off the cost of the renovation. (Please see pg. 12 for more details.) Change isn’t easy and neither is renovating a church! But change is what we have to do if we want our Church to thrive in the future. Now there is a need to take an honest assessment of the level of parishioners’ involvement in our spiritual growth. We have to be courageous enough to reach out to disconnected Catholics of North Lake Tahoe by welcoming and inviting them into our community. We will also continue to minister as effectively as possible to the youth of the area by using your generous resources to allow our youth to experience Christ’s personal love for them. We promise to operate with the best practices, accountability, transparency and financial protocols to ensure your donations are used effectively in compliance with Gospel Values and the mission of the Universal Catholic Church. I am confident enough to say that currently, we have the finest lay staff in the entire diocese. This can also be said of our lay ministers – you are the greatest! Without your direct involvement, I would be walking into a buzz saw because you are honest enough to say, “Fr. this is what you need to know and do.” We share a vision. We are in partnership. While I am grateful for your help in renovating the physical Church, I am further indebted to you for rebuilding our spiritual ministries. Change isn’t easy and neither is renovating a church! But change is what we will continue to do if we want our Church to thrive in the future. We will continue to have growing pains simply because we challenge every parishioner to be involved in at least one of our parish ministries or activities. We all have a charism or spiritual talent to be disciples to one another and to bring people into relationship with Christ. What are we doing that we can do better? What are we not doing that we should be doing? Just as you were asked to help with the renovation, you are now being challenged to be a disciple and to evangelize and to make welcome everyone who appreciates the beauty of the Church you build. The time is now;; the reward is forever.

There will be a second Diocesan collection next weekend, July 6th and July 7th, for Black and Indian Missions.

Evangelization efforts among African Americans, Native Americans, Eskimo and Aleut communities, churches and schools, are made possible by your support of the Black and Indian Missions Office. Your contributions support missionaries here in the United States who are working and teaching in these communities. In addition, your assistance provides opportunities for a sold Catholic education in our Indian and Black Catholic mission schools, allows the purchase of catechetical materials and bibles, and provides for the formation of lay leadership, to name just a few ways the collection supports evangelization.

This collection is more than your monetary support;; it is an opportunity to evangelize and further the missionary cause of bringing the Gospel to our African-American and Native-American brothers and sisters.

With prayers of thanksgiving for your generosity, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of Reno

Gratitude For A Successful Capital Campaign On this 5th anniversary of the completion of the incredible renovation of our worship space, it is only fitting and right that I once again express my gratitude to all of you, for your self-sacrificing gifts. This wonderful project had a cost of $4.9 million and was paid-in-full through your generosity and support of our $5.2 million Capital Campaign. We anticipate receiving an additional $267,000 in pledge payments within the year. Today, we are debt free with $1 million in our Capital Replacement Reserve account, an account which is designated for future repairs, maintenance and replacements. Over the past five years, St. Francis has been successful in providing new and needed ministries: our engaging music ministry and active youth ministry are two clear examples. Others include our outreach ministries which have expanded to where we are able to provide food for the poor, clothing for the homeless and give a monthly tithing of $ 830 to Tahoe Family Solutions. It is your giving heart that supports our ministries. Nearly all of our operational expenses are covered by our weekly collection. St. Francis has a positive cash flow—we do not rely on our reserves to cover operating costs. Amazingly enough, over half of our full-time parishioners are involved in doing some type of ministry. Our goal, of course, is to get every parishioner to discover their own personal charisms and to get involved in a ministry they enjoy and which brings them closer to God. I am ever-gracious for your generous and giving hearts, and for being open to God’s call to stewardship. Continued Blessings, Fr. Bill Nadeau

Issues of Peace and Justice: As we approach the 4th of July, we Americans proudly remember the great political freedoms we enjoy, and we believe deeply that such freedoms belong to all mankind. Our scripture readings today can also be tied to the theme of freedom, yet with an even broader connotation of the word. St. Paul says, “For freedom Christ set us free;; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.” This suggests we have agency in claiming our freedom. We, politically free or not, are free to choose our discipleship. In both the first reading and the gospel, we see God’s initiating a call to discipleship, but some choosing to follow and some not. The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church states, “The human person cannot and must not be manipulated by social, economic or political structures, because every person has the freedom to direct himself towards his ultimate end” (#43). Now, in this country, we must all join in the call to reform our social, economic and political structures such as our unjust immigration law which continues to cause grave suffering to millions and to severely restrict their freedom to live in the dignity due all of humanity.
