Pope Francis also mentions her specifically in the prayer he composed for the Year of Mercy: “Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured paradise to the repentant thief.” Archbishop Roche explained that in giving St. Mary Magdalene the honor of being the first person to see the empty tomb and the first to listen to the truth of the Resurrection, “Christ showed special consideration and mercy to this woman who showed her love for Christ by seeking him in her anguish and suffering in the garden.”

Drawing a comparison between Eve, who “spread death where there was life,” and St. Mary Magdalene, who “announced life from a sepulchre, the place of death,” the archbishop said her feast day is a lesson for all Christians to trust in Christ who is “alive and risen.” “It is right that the liturgical celebration of this woman should have the same rank of Feast as that given to the celebration of the Apostles in the General Roman Calendar and that the special mission of this woman should be underlined, she who is an example and model for all women in the Church.”

Recognizing St. Mary Magdalene’s role as the first to witness Christ’s Resurrection and as a “true and authentic evangelizer,” Pope Francis raised the July 22 memorial of St. Mary Magdalene to a feast on the Church’s liturgical calendar, the Vatican announced.

A decree formalizing the decision was published by the Congregation for Divine Worship on June 10, 2016, along with an article explaining its significance.

Both the decree and the article were titled “Apostolorum Apostola” (“Apostle of the Apostles”).

In the article for the Vatican newspaper, Archbishop Arthur Roche, secretary of the congregation, wrote that in celebrating “an evangelist who announces the central joyful message of Easter,” St. Mary Magdalene’s Feast is a call for all Christians to “reflect more deeply upon the dignity of women, on the new evangelization and on the greatness of the mystery of God’s Mercy.”

“It is precisely in the context of the Jubilee of Mercy that our Holy Father Pope Francis has taken this decision, in order to underline the relevance of this woman ‘who so loved Christ and was so greatly loved by Christ,’” Archbishop Roche wrote.

While most liturgical celebrations of individual saints during the year are known formally as memorials, those classified as feasts are reserved for important events in Christian history and for saints of particular significance, such as the Twelve Apostles. In his Apostolic Letter Dies Domini (The Lord’s Day), St. John Paul II explained that the “commemoration of the saints does not obscure the centrality of Christ, but on the contrary extols it, demonstrating as it does the power of the redemption wrought by him.” Preaching about St. Mary Magdalene, Pope Francis highlighted Christ’s mercy toward a woman who was “exploited and despised by those who believed they were righteous,” but she was loved and forgiven by him. Her tears at Christ’s empty tomb are a reminder that “sometimes in our lives, tears are the lenses we need to see Jesus,” the pope said April 2, 2013, during Mass in his residence, the Domus Sanctae Marthae.

those who gave financial donations, all those who helped build the sets, transfer the sets, and gave their time with the children. Dear friends in Christ,

This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 21, 2014, and will focus on the theme "Teaching about God’s Gift of Forgiveness." Those whom the community has designated to serve as cate-chists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful op-portunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in Sincerely in Christ,

Father Anthony

Welcome to St. Francis Xavier Parish! Whether you are just passing through the area or looking for a spiritual home, we welcome you to our historic catholic church. We were founded in this location in 1910. Throughout the 107 years of being a parish we have continued to grow in size and in faith. We have an elementary school celebrating its 79th year and we hope you find our parish and school hospitable and prayerful. The faithful often attend Mass at a parish for months or years without officially registering. Registration here at St. Francis Xavier is an expression of one’s commitment to being an active member of our community of faith. Parish registration also simplifies the process with regard to religious education; sponsoring a sacramental candidate; planning and preparation of baptisms, weddings, and funerals. Moreover, being a registered member of the parish, facilitates the recording of one’s donations for tax purposes. Registration is easy and can be completed at the Parish Office during regular office hours. Registration forms are also available in the narthex of the Church and on our website.

PREVENT THE FLU: TIPS FROM CDC

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way often when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

On Saturday, February 10, the Confirmation Class attended their Confirmation Retreat at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. Father Anthony led the Confirmandi on a beautiful day of spiritual reflection in their continuing preparation to receive the Holy Spirit. Please keep our Confirmandi in your prayers.

Recently, one morning at Mass, my attention was briefly interrupted by a familiar and an unmistakable sound coming from the pew behind me. I turned and looked over my shoulder. A young mother looked uneasy. She was trying to stop the cry of her newborn baby. I smiled at her. I knew the feeling. I am a mother of six. They are now adults with children of their own. When they were little I always brought them to Mass. Many of my prayers at the time were for them not to disturb other worshipers. Today my children and their children are practicing Catholics. When Mass was over, I expressed my joy to the mother that she had come to worship our God, receive His body and had brought her newborn baby to church. Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.”Luke 18:16. Children are the future of our church. Parents and leaders of our domestic church are responsible for forming our children in our Catholic faith. We know that children do not remain little for long and they rise to our expectations. Always make it a point to welcome children and whoever brings them. God is watching. With the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, already a battle is brewing. His replacement will most likely be a conservative. Thankfully the Pro- Life Community is speaking up. You are urged to join in. Contact your legislators. Since Roe versus Wade began 60 million children have been murdered in the womb. “Abortion is not family planning” said Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Chair of the Bishops Pro-life Committee. Homeless coalitions in Florida may receive the final year of a grant to help the neediest in their communities. Florida has the third-highest homeless rate in the United States with nearly 36,000 people without homes. Roughly 19,000 of the individuals are in shelters, and 17,000 are not in shelters and on the streets. No wonder suicides are on the rise. Pope Francis spoke of how human closeness can counteract a culture of isolation. Sometimes we are tempted to be that kind of Christian who keeps the Lord’s wounds at arm’s length. Jesus wants us to touch human misery, to touch the suffering flesh of others. Open your eyes and hearts to see where you can help. Even a smile or kind word are sometimes welcome. With the love of Jesus (He is watching.),
