Pope Francis’ Prayer Intentions for September: Centrality of the Human Person That each may contribute to the common good and to the building of a society that places the human person at the cen-ter.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Can Jesus really be serious? In today’s gospel, He tells us we have to hate our parents and siblings, wife and chil-dren, even our own life if we want to be His disciple. In other gospels, He has told us to cut off our hand or foot if it leads to temptation, consider divorcees as adulterers, walk away from non-believers, or sell all we have and give the money to the poor. I haven’t done any of these and I’d like to think that I’m a good Christian. So, was Jesus just being dramatic? Was He trying to make a point or simply show-ing His frustration with the non-committal response He was getting? We know the early Church didn’t take it literally: their community was far from being built on hate: “They’ll know we are Christians by our love”. We also know that, after the Resurrection, Peter went back to his family and to his fishing buddies. And the other apostles went back to their livelihoods. It’s only after the coming of the Holy

Spirit that they saw their ministry as a full-time, number one priority. But even then, as St. Paul the tent-maker would tell you, you can keep on living your life as long as it is geared to your ministry. If you work to feed your fam-ily so that you can share your faith with them, you’ve got the right idea. If you reach out to the non-believer so that he can see God’s love through your service, you’re doing fine. If you are a good steward of your blessings so that you can support the charitable works of others, God is pleased. In other words, if God is the reason you get up in the morning, He’s the reason you go to work, support your family, nurture your friendships or hold on to your ‘assets’, I’m sure He is pleased. Is Jesus seri-ous? He certainly wants you to take Him seriously!

K of C Council #12147 will be selling tickets for their annual raffle beginning August 27th at all Masses. Save the Date: September 25, the Annual Par-

ish Cookout following the 10:30 AM Mass in Franklin. Council #11868 Meeting, Monday at 7:30PM in Tilton

There is an interest in making and selling a parish cookbook. To see if this is feasible, we would like to collect favorite recipes (or maybe those not so secret family recipes). If you have recipes that

you would like to see in this cookbook, please email them to us at [email protected]. If it is easier you can drop them by the office or give them to Diane Williams or Meri-lynn Banton. IF this happens, maybe we can raise a few dollars for the parish. This is not an Angel Fair project..

Did you know? That volunteers from St. Ga-briel Parish support the spiritual needs of 6 lo-cal nursing homes. There is Golden Crest, Mt. Ridge, Peabody Home, Gerrish Manor, Merri-

mack County Home, and the New Hampshire Veterans Home. Volunteers from our parish make communion calls and support Fr. Ray with monthly Masses celebrated at most of the facilities. Please contact us if this is something you might be interested in helping. Call the office at 934-5013 for more information. Thank you to all our volun-teers who give so much of their time to this ministry!

Please join us for an organizational meeting for the 2016 Angel Fair on Wednesday, Sep-tember 7, at 6:30PM in the Parish Office Conference Room. St Gabriel Parish relies

on the income from fundraisers .like the Angel Fair to meet our financial needs. Unfortunately we have lost two major fund raising events this year (approximately $7,000 of income), making the overall success of the Angel Fair even more important. The success is de-pendent on the participation of our entire parish community. So please make plans to join us for this important meeting. Above all, this is a great way to meet and work with fellow parishioners. Please contact Sandra Burney at 934-3654 with questions or input. The Angel Fair is Saturday, November 5.

The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a soccer challenge at the Bessie Rowell Com-munity Center in Franklin. This will be held on

Saturday, September 17 (with a rain date of October 1). Registration is free and begins at 8:30AM for girls and boys, ages 9-14. The competition begins at 9:00AM and winners in each age group will receive a trophy, with certificates of participa-tion to all. If you have any questions please contact Tim Stangroom at 603 -934-6782. All are welcome so come join the fun!
