It is not too late to contribute to the Catholic Com-munications Campaign,. This collection supports diocesan and national efforts to ensure a Catholic presence in the media as well as Catholic commu-nications programs such as PARABLE Magazine.

Pope Francis’ Prayer Intentions for May: Respect for Women: That in every country of the world, women may be honored and respect-ed and their essential contribution to society may be highly esteemed.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Defining God: About 40% of Americans believe in a “higher power” but do not attend religious services regular-ly. In Europe, the number is even higher. Experts claim that people today want to run their own lives. They resent having someone over them. They expect to get through life on their own, using their intelligence, their tenacity and a bit of luck. While they don’t pretend that the world revolves around them, they don’t believe that God plays an active role in their daily life. They take each day as it comes, try-ing to be the best person they can be because it makes them feel good about themselves. When they mess up? Well, nobody’s perfect! Heaven or hell? They’ll take their chances. Fortunately, the other 60% are developing a healthy relationship with God. Moslems, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses and many other religious groups praise God, ask for guidance, say thanks and even seek His forgiveness. For Christians, it is even

better. Because God has revealed Himself to us as a Trini-ty, we know Who we are dealing with. Jesus showed us a loving Father, who provides for all of our needs and wants to make us happy both now and for eternity. Jesus himself spent 33 years among us, showing us how to live a rich, meaningful and productive life. Then He sent the Holy Spirit, whose guidance and special gifts are helping us be-come the best persons we can be. As Christians, we’re not serving a distant, powerful deity who wants to oppress us or limit our freedom. We are sharing our life with a Father who loves us unconditionally, a Son who would do anything for us and a Holy Spirit who wants to be there for us at every moment of our lives. When your definition of God is lim-ited to “higher power”, you miss out on all the support, affirmation, direction, purpose, love, grace and life God wants to give you.
