Saint-Gobain High Performance BlowersInstallation and Maintenance Instructions

Blower Selection

WARNING: Make sure your blower model and materials are compatible with theintended application in terms of chemicals, temperatures, CFM (Cubic feet/minute)and static pressure. Specify explosion-proof motors for environments with flam-mable or explosive vapors. Refer to the current Saint-Gobain Industrial ProductsCatalog: (1) blower listings and (2) chemical resistance chart, or contact Saint-GobainPerformance Plastics.

Preliminary Inspection

Each Saint-Gobain blower is inspected and tested at the factory prior to shipment. However, we recommend that you examine the blower carefully upon receipt. If it hasbeen damaged in transit, contact the carrier and file a damage claim immediately. Before installation, examine blower wheel and turn it manually to be certain that it rotatesfreely.

Installation

WARNING: ONLY qualified, experienced personnel should install or work on the blow-er. To prevent risk of electrical shock ALWAYS disconnect and lock open power sourcebefore making adjustments to the blower mechanism.

Blower Installation

1.Mount blower on solid base. Vibration isolators may be included if desired.2.Tighten the following parts:

0 Bolts on blowers and connections

0 Bolts mounting blower to platform0 Bolts on bearing locking collar0 Set-screws on motor, fan pulleys and shaft extension

CAUTION: Inspect duct-to-duct and blower-to-duct connections for a tight fit. Weak con-nections will allow leakage of corrosive or toxic fumes and vapors.

Saint-Gobain blowers are designed for indoor applications. For outdoor applications, themotor assembly must be protected from rain or snow with a suitable cover. Install a raincap on the discharge duct to prevent rain or snow from entering the blower housing.

V-Belt Installation or Replacement (for blowers with belt drive only)Prior to Installation

1. Inspect all parts for wear, dirt and rust. Dirt and rust diminish sheave performance.2. Clean all surfaces and replace worn parts. Sheaves with grooves that have sharp

edges shorten belt life and should be replaced.

To mount belts

1. To prevent stretching of belt, reduce distance between sheaves by loosening the fourmotor bolts and moving the motor.

2. Mount belts on sheaves. Do not pry belt into grooves.3. Adjust center distance between sheaves until belt is tight.

To~diust tensiQn

NOTE: Proper belt tension is essential for maximum life and performance. Proper ten-sion will be indicated by a slight bowing on the slack side of the belt during operation.Insufficient tension will result in slipping and excessive bowing of the belt. If tension istoo tight, you will experience a taut slack side during operation atpeak load.

1. Inspect blower while operating for unequal load distribution (loose or tight belts). Ifnecessary, stop blower, disconnect and lock open power source, and readjust belts.Check for worn or mismatched parts.

2. Inspect slack side. If taut, reduce distance between sheaves. If belt slips, increasedistance between sheaves.

3. Keep drive clean to avoid slippage or damage to sheaves and belts.

WARNING: DO NOT modify blower to increase speed beyond the safe maximum limitnoted on the warning label (1200 or 1800 RPM). Higher speeds may cause breakageof impeller and personal injury. In compliance with OSHA Standard 1910.219, pulleyand belt safety guards MUST be attached when blower is not fully enclosed.

Sheave Installation or ReplacementToinstall sheaves

1. Tapered cone surface on bushing and bore of sheave must match. Examine and cleanboth parts.

2. Mount sheave on bushing and loosely insert bolts. NOTE: DO NOT lubricate threads.3. Insert key into keyway of shaft. With bolt heads to the outside, place sheave and

bushing assembly in desired location.4. Turn sheaves one-half revolution to determine proper seating. Using a straight edge,

align sheaves and tighten bolts and keyway set-screws evenly.

To remove sheaves

1. Remove bolts and set screws.

2. Place bolts in removal holes. Tighten each bolt partially in sequence until sheaveseparates from bushing.

3. Remove sheave from bushing and bushing from shaft, if necessary.

Bearing Installation or Replacement1. Align bearing in its housing (pillow block). Slide housing unit into position on shaft.2. Bolt pillow block tightly to its mounting support with the cap screws.3. Slide collar against cam of inner ring. Rotate collar until its slides over cam end to

engage cam. Tap lightly in direction of shaft rotation to lock collar. Repeat procedurewith other cam. The cams must be facing in-toward each other. The two lockingcollars are spaced between the bearings.

4. Tighten set-screws.

5. If belt drive has been taken apart for maintenance, inspect shaft before reassembling. It must be straight and free of burrs. Be sure ball bearing is not seated on a worn sec-tion.

NOTE: Once installation is complete and correct rotation is determined, inspect engage-ment of collar and tightness of set-screw. If not correct, disassemble by loosening set-screw and tapping collar in the opppsite direction of shaft rotation.

Electrical Installation and Operating InstructionsWARNING: DO NOT reach inside blower, insert or drop tooling into the blower. Before doing any work on the blower, ALWAYS shut off electrical power and lock switchopen.

0 A complete wiring diagram appears on the connection plate of the blower motor. Followthis diagram without deviation when connecting the motor to your power supply. Forassistance or technical service regarding the motor, contact the motor manufacturer'sservice center. Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics, can provide a list of these centers.Call 856-423-6630

0 Voltage frequency and current capacity are indicated on the motor nameplate.Make sure they match your power supply. When a 230/460-voltmotor operates with208 volts at its terminals rather than 220 volts, it will deliver approximately 10% lowerlocked motor and breakdown torque. It will also draw up to 4% more line current at therated load and will run hotter.

NOTE: For maximum service, install motor in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area. Plan

easy access for inspection, cleaning and lubrication. Surrounding air temperatureshould not exceed 104Fo (400C) unless a higher ambient temperature is indicatedon the motor nameplate. Enclosed motors are equipped with condensation vents on thebottom center of both end frames. Remove drain plugs when motor is exposed to weath-er or installed in any high-humidity area. After Installation

1. Inspect blower mounting and any connected ductwork.2. Remove any debris left in ducts.3. Start motor to observe rotation. The direction of the rotation on a three-phase motor

can be reversed by interchanging any two of the line wires to the motor leads. Tochange rotation, refer to instructions, on connection plate.

CAUTION: Motor intake amperage should not exceed rated amperage of motor, If motoris overloaded, stop blower immediately. Motor damage caused by overload is not coveredby manufacturer's warranty.

CAUTION: Observer blower performance at start-up. In case of excessive vibration, noise, or other signs of trouble, shut off blower. DO NOT start again until problem is elimi-nated.

CAUTION: Examine all bolts and set-screws after one hour and again 24 hours after

start-up.4. Examine air flow for impurities. If excessive, arrange for filtration and set up a regular

cleaning schedule, depending on the air conditions. Accumulation of impurities onblower wheel will cause damage.
