SAINT HELEN’S PARISH 28 th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR 15 th October 2017 "Invite everyone you can find to the wedding." THE WORD THIS WEEK The Gospel today speaks of a wedding feast that is open to all, but not everyone is willing to come. This is a challenge to us, who feel we have been invited and have a place in the Kingdom. It might also be a chance for us to reflect on how we reach out to the lapsed, and to the unbaptised: Do we wait for people to knock on the door, or do we go out to find them and share the banquet? We might also reflect on how we celebrate marriage, and support it, and prepare young people for it. The Reading from Isaiah reminds us that in Judaism the coming of the Messiah is often compared to a wedding feast, and shows what that should feel like: Rich food, fine wine, and the wiping away of tears. But Paul tells the Philippians this doesn’t worry him, he (and we) rely on God to fulfil all our needs as lavishly as only God can. TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: (Psalter: Week 4) Isaiah 25: 6 10. The Lord will prepare a banquet and will wipe away tears from every cheek. Response: Psalm 22. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path; he is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil; my cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell for ever and ever. Philippians 4: 12 14, 19 20. There I is nothing I cannot master with the help of the One who gives me strength. Acclamation for the Gospel: Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia! The Word was made flesh and lived among us; To all who did accept him He gave power to become children of God. Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia! Matthew 22: 1 14. Invite everyone you can find to the wedding. Prayer of the Faithful: R/. Lord, guide us along the right path.

SAINT HELEN’S PARISH

28th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR 15th October 2017

"Invite everyone you can find to the wedding."

THE WORD THIS WEEK The Gospel today speaks of a wedding feast that is open to all, but not everyone is willing to come. This is a

challenge to us, who feel we have been invited and have a place in the Kingdom. It might also be a chance for

us to reflect on how we reach out to the lapsed, and to the unbaptised: Do we wait for people to knock on the

door, or do we go out to find them and share the banquet? We might also reflect on how we celebrate marriage,

and support it, and prepare young people for it. The Reading from Isaiah reminds us that in Judaism the coming

of the Messiah is often compared to a wedding feast, and shows what that should feel like: Rich food, fine

wine, and the wiping away of tears. But Paul tells the Philippians this doesn’t worry him, he (and we) rely on

God to fulfil all our needs as lavishly as only God can.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: (Psalter: Week 4)

Isaiah 25: 6 – 10.

Philippians 4: 12 – 14, 19 – 20. There I is nothing I cannot master with the help of the One who gives me strength.

Acclamation for the Gospel:

Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia! The Word was made flesh and lived among us; To all who did accept him He gave power to become children of God. Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia!

Matthew 22: 1 – 14. Invite everyone you can find to the wedding.

Prayer of the Faithful: R/. Lord, guide us along the right path.

CHRISTIAN PRAYER. Section Two: The Lord’s Prayer: ‘Our Father’

Article 3: The Seven Petitions. III. ‘Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread’

(2831) But the presence of those who hunger because they lack bread opens up another

profound meaning of this petition. The drama of hunger in the world calls Christians who

pray sincerely to exercise responsibility toward their brethren, both in their personal

behaviour and in their solidarity with the human family. This petition of the Lord’s Prayer

cannot be isolated from the parables of the poor man Lazarus and of the Last Judgement. (Cf.
