Page 2 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 2, 2015

In 1990 playwright Brian Friel staged the highly successful Dancing at Lughnasa at Dublin’s Ab-bey Theatre. It was adapted as a film starring Mer-yl Streep in 1998. The award-winning play and film relate a bitter-sweet story of five sisters and a young boy in County Donegal during Lammastide (Lughnasa), 1936. Their already challenged lives are further complicated by the homecoming of their brother, Father Jack, a missionary who has lost his faith and exhibits early signs of dementia. As sum-mer ends the family faces poverty, sadness, and an uncertain future. Lammas may or may not be new to you. It is a “threshold” for other feasts associated with the har-vest. The Feast of the Transfiguration on August 6 and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin have long been occasions to hallow “first fruits” and bless flowers in Central and Eastern Europe. There are times when I feel like the glory of Christendom is being eroded by a trivial obsession with technology. More often, I see the “twin gi-ants”—secularism and relativism—doing real mis-chief by re-writing history, ignoring virtue, and threatening our most important beliefs. Take time to know your faith better, practice it more sincerely, and continue your search for traditions that are at the core of our Catholic identity. The reflection on Lammas is just a “footnote” in a work that is our defining story. Our Catholic herit-age is “buried treasure”—the “pearl of a great price”! -Fr. Luczak

CATHOLIC TRADITIONS, LOST AND FOUND: Lammas

In England, Scotland and Ireland, August 1 is known as Lammas Day. The word “Lammas” is from the Anglo-Saxon hlaf-mas or “loaf mass”. Lammas celebrates the first harvest festival of the year. During this time the “first fruits” of grain were gathered and used to make altar breads for a Mass of Thanksgiving. Loaves were also made for the home. These loaves were brought to the church, placed before the altar and blessed. It was the custom to bring Lammas bread home. Popularly regarded as a powerful talisman, the Lammas loaf was sometimes divided in four and placed at the north, south, east, and west walls of a house or barn to ward off evil. Lammas, while Christian in most respects, clearly has pagan origins. Its Celtic names were Lugnasad and Lughnasa. As the names imply, it was a feast in honor of Lugh, a dei-ty associated with the harvest. Lughnasa became renowned for games, athletic contests, and revelry. The “Fairs” of Lughnasa drew many to eat, drink, dance, and compete in games. It was said of one of the greatest fairs that it was a place where “all Ireland met”. I think I was in my teens and a lover of folk music when I first heard the ballad Ould Lammas Fair.

At the ould Lammas fair boys were you ever there Were you ever at the Fair in Ballycastle-O? Did you treat your Mary Ann to Dulse and Yellow Man? Then, I liked the jaunty tune, but couldn’t even tell you what Lammas was! I did not know that “Dulse” was red sea weed and “Yellow Man” was a sticky honeycomb toffee. Nor did I know that Ballycastle was in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. That great Lammas Fair began there in the 17th Century and continues to this day. Originally a sheep mar-ket, Ballycastle’s Lammas Fair continues to offer livestock sales, live music, and dancing.

GOD’S WORK

We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being “God’s work.” But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for oth-ers is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is need-ed, where it is needed. What is “God’s work?” “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent” (John 6:29). It is so important to have your children in religious edu-

cation each year! No one year provides everything and

since faith is about relationship with God and with the

Church, relationships need to grow and deepen. Classes

for Grs. 1-Confirmation Year II (8th Gr. and older) begin

Monday, August 31st, with a brief prayer service in the

church at 6:30 p.m. Kindergarten classes begin on Sun-

day, September 13th, 10-11 a.m. If you have not yet regis-

tered your children, please do so this week!

For new families there is a family form, a form for each

child and a permission regarding medical attention and

photos to sign. We also need a copy of each child’s bap-

tismal certificate if they were not baptized here at St.

Isaac Jogues Parish. Families with children who are

older and have not celebrated First Reconciliation or

First Communion or who have children with special

needs are encouraged to call Dolores Stanton, 847/966-

1180, to discuss how we can help them in their education

and formation in the faith and preparation for sacraments.

If anyone has a financial concern regarding RE classes,

please call to discuss the situation. No one is denied reli-

gious education due to financial difficulties. All are

welcome!

*We are seeking an Assistant for the Kindergarten RE

class (Sunday, 10-11 a.m.), who would alternate weeks

with another assistant. This is a great volunteer oppor-

tunity for those in high school or older. For more infor-

mation, please contact Dolores Stanton, 847/966-1180,

this week.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Customs surrounding wedding rites are often

in tension with our liturgical tradition. Sometimes

practices are almost forced on engaged couples.

Anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows

how quickly the invoices expand. A hundred dol-

lars here, a hundred there, often for non-

essentials, when more deeply traditional practices,

like an expression of charity for the poor, fall by

the wayside. One such practice often labeled as

“deeply traditional” is the aisle runner for the

bride. Actually, the American tradition is to clean

our church buildings, in contrast to European vil-

lage churches, which often had dirt or cobblestone

floors. There, a band of linen (rented) or a carpet

of flowers might be set in place for a bridal party.

Here, plastic roll-ups are procured and positioned

by the ushers for the bride’s entrance. The prob-

lems are many, not the least of which is that there

is no “bride’s entrance” in our official liturgy.

Another is that in a wedding Mass, the communi-

cants have to navigate the treacherous aisle with

the sometimes-slippery runner. The aisle runner is

neither a treasure nor a tradition, and by omitting

it, the couple who asks for canned goods for the

poor to be brought to church at their wedding

Mass will find an extra hundred dollars or so for

the cause!

GOVERNING OUR PASSIONS Whoever governs their passions is master of the world. We must either command them, or be commanded by them. It is better to be the hammer than the anvil. —St. Dominic
