STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the "Bread of Life" discourse from John's Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews' ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life--a marvelous promise, but this "reward" is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. Flowers can be donated in honor of a living person or in memory of someone who has died, in celebration of an anniversary or other milestone, or in thanksgiving for friends or family. Their names will appear in the bulletin on the Sunday you select. If you prefer, you can simply give the flowers to the Glory of God. You can request special colors. C & O CANAL DAYS
Saint Augustine's Church will be sponsoring the annual Cake Walk during the C & O Canal Days on August 25 and 26. We held last year's walk in the Community Building of Byron Memorial Park and, as of today, there has been no change of venue for this annual fundraiser for our church. It takes many cakes at least 40, (but last year we were blessed with over 60) to be successful. At only $1.00 to enter each walk, you can't beat the price if you are the winner. Sign-up sheets are in the atrium to help work at the Cake Walk. There is also a sign-up sheet to promise to make us a cake or two. Although the "homemade" variety are a treat, we find the store-bought also work for our winners. Cupcakes are great for the kids. We will receive cakes on Friday night. Aug. 24 in the atrium of St. Augustine's from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. or you may drop them off at the Community Building on Sat. or Sun. morning after 9 AM. Any questions?? A Elías el pan que el ángel le ofrece le hace olvidarse de
su hastío de la vida y le infunde nuevas ganas de vivir para
ser propagador y defensor de la fe en Yahvéh. Jesús es el
pan vivo, bajado del cielo; es decir, el pan que da la vida
nueva, cuyo poder insospechado obró maravillas en los
primeros cristianos que se reunían semanalmente para la
fracción del pan. Fortalecidos con ese alimento celestial
difundieron la Buena Nueva de Jesucristo en todos los
ángulos del imperio romano, se esforzaron por vivir una
vida moral que llamaba la atención de los paganos,
estuvieron dispuestos a sufrir persecuciones e incluso el
martirio. Cuando en el corazón del hombre habita
Jesucristo, haciéndole partícipe de su propia vida divina
mediante el pan de la Eucaristía, entonces "ya no soy yo
quien vivo -por usar palabras de san Pablo-, es Cristo
quien vive en mí". Por otra parte, el pan que da la vida de
Cristo al creyente, es también el pan que hace vivir. Hace
vivir al hombre desanimado, infundiéndole razones para
vivir; hace vivir al hombre desorientado, abriéndole
horizontes de futuro y esperanza; hace vivir al hombre
descarriado enderezando sus pasos por el camino del amor
para ser como Jesús un pedazo de pan para sus hermanos
los hombres; hace vivir al hombre desesperado de la vida
mostrándole que es bello entregarse a Dios y a los demás,
con Jesucristo, como oblación y víctima de suave aroma.
Ese pan divino nos da la vida, nos hace vivir y además nos
enseña el arte de vivir. Arte que consiste en ser grano de
trigo que muere, se pudre, revive, se convierte en espiga,
es triturado para llegar a ser harina, es amasado y puesto
al fuego para convertirse en pan dorado para saciar el
hambre de Dios que tienen tantos hombres.
