When we celebrate the feasts of the saints it is usually on the day of their death, that is, the date of their “birth” into eternal life. We celebrate the birth of only three individuals as well as their deaths. Jesus at Christmas and Good Friday, the Blessed Virgin, December 8 and the Assumption (in the Easter Church known as the Dormition of the Theotokos) and also the birth and death of St John the Baptist. It is such an important feast that it supersedes Sunday, like today. John the Baptizer had a mission. It was foretold by the great prophets. He would prepare the way of the Lord. To this he was called from before his birth, as we heard in the first reading from the prophet, “The LORD called me from birth, from my mother's womb he gave me my name.” John went into the desert to live as a hermit eating wild honey and locusts (for those of you who were wondering, locusts are actually kosher, considered “clean food” (yuck)). Then he started preaching repentance and baptizing as a symbol of starting a new life after repentance. Why? to be prepared to accept the Lord when he came. And one day he turned and pointed and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God”. Two of his disciples left him and followed Jesus. One was Andrew who later went to tell his brother Simon (eventually called Peter). St John the Baptizer was the last of the Old Testament prophets. As his father, Zechariah prophesies once he has regained his speech: “You my child shall be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins.” For generations the people of God waited for the forgiveness of sins. We have it whenever we need it. They longed for it. We take it for granted. They died in their sins because they had no other choice. We die in our sins out of carelessness. Go to Confession!

A Message from Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso

Stewardship Reflections “…Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.” – ACTS 13:25

Stewardship is a lifestyle, it’s not a program or a process. It’s how we are called to live our lives twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week! It challenges us to live “God-centered” lives, not “self-centered” lives. Reflect on your daily activities, do you do them for the glory of God or for the glory of your own name?
