We are all familiar with the absolutist “either…or”. One thing excludes the other. But in Catholic Theology we have the concept, in Latin, of “et…et” (“both…and”). Since human language is limited and the mysteries of God are without limit we must accept that some truths cannot exclude each other. That brings me to Holy Mass. What is the Mass about? Is it a convivial meal? Is it a sacrifice? Is it a remembrance of the Lord’s passion and resurrection? It is all of the above. It is not a celebration of ourselves. It is not a community sing along. It is not theater. It is not entertainment. In the Eastern Church, what we call the “sacraments” are called the “mysteries”. It is that sense of mystery which inspires awe that we need to reawaken. The realization that Christ, that is, God, comes to us in a very special way. This should fill us with this wonder and awe. The signs, the sacraments, that we see, feel, taste, with our senses have a certain and clear spiritual effect which we cannot sense but we know are very real. From that difference we should be filed with wonder and awe. The Vatican Council II documents say that we should should be in “full, active, conscious participation”. We should be fully engaged in the Liturgy through our attention, our posture and our prayer. We should actively pray together and sing together. All this should come from the sense of wonder and awe. Not because we are forced to do so. Not because we are scolded or because of peer pressure. We should want to participate as fully as possible since it is Jesus himself, God himself, who comes to us. Once we realize this and internalize it all things become secondary. Christ is the center and summit or our lives. This week we will welcome Fr Joseph Kibali who is a marriage counselor working at Catholic Charities. Bishop Checchio has assigned Fr. Kibali to be “in residence” at our parish. He will be assisting at Mass and sacraments in our parish. Fr. Kibali speaks fluent English and Spanish. In the past he served as parochial vicar at St Margaret de Pazzi in Flemington and St Bernadette in Parlin. Please welcome him warmly.

The Bread and Wine that are being offered at our Eucharistic Celebration this week are in loving memory of RenéHerrera. This is a gift from the Bohinski Family.

Fr. Kibali habla inglés y español. El fue vicario parroquial en Sta. Margaret de Pazzi en Flemington y Sta. Bernadette en Parlin. Démosle una buena bienvenida.

A SAFE PLACE

A Safe Place is a group that welcomes those who have experienced the tragic death of a loved one through drugs, suicide and other hard to face things. It offers, as its name states, a safe place to:

• Speak about what happened

• Where judgement will be suspended, can talk freely

• To ask questions, some of which cannot be answered, but need to at least be spoken

• To know that the discussions will be safe and others will make sure they have my back

• To speak with at least the hope that God is present, even if I do not feel Him or are angry

The purpose of this group is NOT to offer an answer or fix you.
