HOSPITALITY On Mission for The Church Alive!

We all try to be warm and friendly to each other and now we must continue to extend our warm person-alities to those entering our church on a new basis. Due to possible Mass time changes or perhaps visi-tors from outside the surrounding area, we could encounter individuals or families not familiar with the layout of our parish. We all feel best when we are comfortable, and we cannot assume someone knows the pattern flow as we approach the altar to receive the most Holy Eucharist, the prayer format for St. Anthony (Tuesdays) and Mother of Sorrows (Fridays) novena prayers or the direction of the bath-room facilities. Please take the time to look around and if you are not familiar with those around you, introduce your-self and ask if they need any assistance. I believe our church is quite hospitable but if you would like to extend yourself a bit further contact me (Donna Spohn). It would be nice to have individuals at each entrance to hold a door open (if needed) compliment someone or just say hello. You are welcome to leave a voice message at 412-401-9669 if you have any interest in offering addi-tional hospitality to our church. Thank you.

LADIES OF CHARITY NEWS We have been invited to join the Holy Trinity Ladies of Charity for their meeting this Thursday, Sept. 13. They initially meet at church for a Mass at 6:30 pm followed by their meeting. Some of us plan to go and all are invited. Then on Thursday, Sept. 20 we will host our meeting at 7 pm in the Gathering Place. The Holy Trinity group plans to attend. Please make time to attend both meetings, this is a great time for us to get to know each other and make plans to become one group. All women 18 years and older are welcome to attend and we welcome visitors. If you have any questions, please contact Alice Kilonsky at 412-331-6986.

CHICKEN DINNER VOLUNTEERS The following are dinner chair persons: Anna Jane Bayer, Publicity; Pat Golembiewski, Basket Auction; Jennifer Meyer, Dessert; Joanne Lorenz, Servers; Terry Fedio/Julienne Giuliani, Tickets/Sales. We are still in need of people to chair the 50/50 raffle and the bake sale. If you can help please call Terry 412-331-3443. Dinner tickets will be available for pur-chase at the Masses next weekend.

PATRIOTIC ROSARY THANK YOU Thank you to all parishioners and visitors who joined hearts and voices offering prayers to the Holy Spirit and our Blessed Mother during the Patriotic Rosary. A special thank you to Julienne Giuliani, Donna Spohn, Marie Incorvati, Roni Rojahn and Bob Zitelli from St. John of God, Holy Trinity and St. Malachy Parishes who invoked the prayers for healing, forgiveness and mercy, and guidance in building vibrant communities of faith and friendship. The singing of Alexis Nagy and the music of Music Minis-ter Elna Johnson enhanced the beauty and sanctity of the service. As a reminder, our next Patriotic Rosary is scheduled for Monday, November 12.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP Have you suffered the loss of a loved one, are strug-gling with your feelings and wondering why people don’t always understand? Meeting and sharing with others who also have experienced the death of a loved one can be a source of healing for you. The group will offer an op-portunity to meet with others who have a common experience of grief. It will provide a safe and healing environment where grieving individuals can listen, share and learn together. The group will meet on Monday evenings in the Holy Trinity Parish Ministry Center. The meetings will start each Monday at 6:30 pm and end at 8:00 pm. The first meeting will be on Monday, September 24, 2018 and the group will continue to meet for six consecutive Mondays, end-ing on November 5, 2018. Participants are strongly encouraged to register in advance. For more information or to register for the Bereavement Group, please contact Mary Stevens at 412-874-0604.

ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! Who Do You Say That I Am? - Faith is not lived in a vacuum. In fact, so much about our faith seeks to unite us as a community of believers. The celebra-tions of the Sacraments, for instance, are an oppor-tunity for gathering as people of faith to share in the life of Christ that draws us together as his sisters and brothers. Even a Sacrament that is celebrated alone, like reconciliation, restores unity among the people of God which is broken by our sinfulness. Yet, while we support each other in faith, we can speak for others about our desire to follow God. At Mass we announce, “I confess to almighty God,” and we profess, “I believe in one God”, in order to make manifest the faith in our hearts. Thankfully, these words echo with all those gathered around us to remind us that we are never alone in this journey ever closer to God. On Mission for the Church Alive! is an opportunity for us to be confirmed in our faith so that we can confidently proclaim that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. At the same time, it is a call to unite us more closely to God and others to strengthen and grow the Church. Visit onmission-churchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

LIFE CHAIN All SJOG parishioners are invited and encouraged to participate in Life Chain on Respect Life Sunday, October 7, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the St. Malachy upper parking lot. Life Chain is a peaceful and prayerful public witness of pro-life individuals stand-ing for sixty minutes praying for our nation and for an end to abortion. It is a visual statement of solidarity by the Christian community that abortion kills chil-dren and that the Church supports the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception until natural death. Please join us!

COME AND SEE High School men: come to encoun-ter the Lord through a day of prayer, fun, and brotherhood on

ST. JOHN OF GOD PARISH MCKEES ROCKS, PA

PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone

Guest Columnist: Fr. Dave Poecking

Dear brothers and sisters, In a few weeks the implementation phase of On Mission for The Church Alive! begins. All around the diocese, new clergy teams have been preparing by visiting the parishes of their grouping, participating in sessions for formation and information, and talking about a shared vision and their hopes for the future. In our grouping, we’ve also just begun a grouping executive council (GEC), consisting of the clergy and Tom Adams, Rosemary Corsetti, Tim Davis, Linda Gomulka, David Hess, Joe Maggi, and Dr. Bill Stropkaj. The GEC will advise me on how to make decisions for our grouping, but does not replace the pastoral and finance councils, which will remain the official advisory bodies for each parish. This letter announces the interim Mass schedule for our grouping. The new weekday schedule is effective on Monday, October 15, 2018. The Saturday evening and Sunday Mass schedule will not be changing at this time, but please remember that both schedules are interim, which means they will be reevaluated and adjusted as necessary, after the clergy team has had sufficient time to celebrate Masses, and determine, with your feedback, how it suits the pastoral needs of all the parishioners in our grouping. I developed the interim schedule with input from the outgoing pastors, clergy teams and regional vicars. The schedule accommodates as best as we now can the number of priests assigned, the churches’ seating capacity and parking, accessibility, school and religious education schedules, and our expectations for funerals.

I also want you to know that my plan for the coming year is to have Fr. Bob Zajdel and the retired priests of the grouping remain where they are currently residing. I’ve asked Fr. Alan Morris to reside at Holy Trinity rectory and Fr. Michael Ruffalo to reside at St. Malachy rectory, where I, too, will live. I made the residence decisions mainly to accommodate the personal living requirements of each priest. When and if it becomes possible to consolidate our residences and perhaps thus save some money and labor, we will reconsider. We are embarking on a new endeavor to bring renewed energy around the practice of our faith in the whole diocese. Even as we face changing schedules and new clergy assignments we are called as members of the Body of Christ to promote unity and share our resources for the good of all people. May God continue to guide us always and in all ways. Sincerely in Christ,

(Rev.) Dave Poecking

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar If we want to be happy at home we must commit (“lose ourselves”) to our family. If we try to be independent from others (“save ourselves”) we end up lonely and alone. Happiness is found in commit-ments. The Gospel is true: We save our life by losing it!
