BREAKING OF THE BREAD Two disciples walk to Emmaus talking about all that has happened, and they meet the risen Lord. Today’s passage from Luke is the earliest description of the Mass format. We meet the Lord on our way, he explains the Scriptures,

and we recognize him in the breaking of the bread. Do our hearts burn within us as he talks to us and explains the Scriptures? Shall we, then, follow him on his way—proclaiming our witness to the risen Lord as the Apostles did? God help us!

In this Sunday’s Gospel, as we hear the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we also come to know that our daily reaching out to

our neighbor is our daily walk with the risen Christ; we recognize him in others. In all the appearances of Our Lord after His resurrection, his disciples and friends had difficulty recognizing Him. That should b e a source of encouragement to us when we do not see Him clearly in the ordinary events of our lives. Every day we must take care that our actions show God’s blessings, goodness and care. Leading others to Jesus doesn’t mean doing great things, it means doing the little things well and so reflecting the life of Jesus in us. Consider answering the call to “help the poor recognize the Lord in their life” by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, May 17th at 12:30PM in the Conference Room of the Parish Center. We welcome new members and can be reached at 234-6535 ext, 103. Join us and walk with Jesus as you recognize him in the poor and suffering.

Miraculous Medal Novena to Mary

O Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of Our Lord Jesus and our Mother, penetrated with the most lively confidence in your all-powerful and never-failing intercession, manifested so often through the Miraculous Medal, we your loving and trustful children implore you to obtain for us the graces and favors we ask during this novena, if they be beneficial to our immortal souls, and the souls for whom we pray. (Here form your petition)

You know, O Mary, how often our souls have been the sanctuaries of your Son who hates iniquity. Obtain for us then a deep hatred of sin and that purity of heart which will attach us to God alone so that our every thought, word and deed may tend to His greater glory. Obtain for us also a spirit of prayer and self-denial that we may recover by penance what we have lost by sin and at length attain to that blessed abode where you are the Queen of angels and of men. Amen.

Memorare Prayer

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence I fly to You, O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the word incarnate, despise not my petition, but in Your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.

From Fr. Chris N.: In our Gospel this weekend we have Luke’s beautiful Emmaus story which is a, theological dramatization of one of the encounters with the Risen Lord during those wonder-filled days after the discovery of the empty tomb (Mk 16: 12-13). It is the story of how on Easter Sunday two disciples of Jesus, discouraged and devastated, set out on the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus -- a distance of about seven miles -- and were met by a stranger going along the same road. They began to speak to him about all that had occurred in the Holy City during the previous week. Most probably, Cleopas and his companion were husband and wife, residents of Emmaus and disciples of Jesus who had witnessed his crucifixion and burial. The two disciples chose to leave Jerusalem on the third day after the death of Jesus – the very day they had received news that the tomb was empty. They were “prevented” from recognizing Him, perhaps partly by preoccupation with their own disappointment and problems. As they journeyed on, Jesus showed them how the scriptures had foretold all that He had done and suffered, including his death and its purpose. His coming to them and walking beside them illustrates the truth that the road to Emmaus is a road of companionship with Jesus who desires to walk with each of us. "I am with you always" (Matthew 28:20). The incident further illustrates that Jesus is with us even when we do not recognize him. God’s Blessings Always, Fr. Chris N.
