Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 25, 2018

This Holiest of Weeks Palm Sunday begins the week that we call "Holy" in a way that sets these days apart from all others in the year. I ask you to take some time right now to consider how spe-cial this week is and how as Catholics there is no better way to show God our gratitude and our trust in his infinite mercy. The fact that more Catholics celebrate Christmas than Easter shows that a lot of us have not really grasped who Jesus is and what he really did for us. The wood of the manger seems to mean more to us than the wood of the cross. We have bought the cultural,, consumer-packaged Jesus that has more to do with being a nice guy than being our savior. If you don't think so, look around at how Catholics you know will spend Holy Week. When schools close for Good Friday, most kids will spend it playing and not praying. What if these holy days really meant something to us? What if it cost us our life? Think for a moment about our devout Jewish friends and neighbors. Ask them what it has cost to hold to their faith. Jews are a minority in our world. They suffered terribly throughout history but most notably in the Holocaust of the 20th century. The Nazi regime made a concerted effort to virtually annihilate all Jews. By the end of World War II an estimated 6,000 Jews were put to death using the most extreme means of starvation and torture. For many Jews who survived, the Holocaust made them realize that holding fast to their faith is a matter of life and death. To preserve their faith and their identity Jews continue to observe Passover as a very important family feast of faith. For 3000 years they have gathered in homes to recall how God saved them from slavery and gave them their own land. At each passover God solidi-fies their identity as his people and renews his covenant. At the beginning of their Passover meal the youngest asks this question: Why is this night different from all other nights? Thus begins the retelling of the great exodus story which gave a rebirth to the people of Israel. For Jews this is the narrative that reminds them of how God still pre-serves them and gives them a new life. For Christians, our rebirth began at baptism when we re-lived the Passover of Jesus: his passing over from death on the cross to his new risen life. Jesus gave us our new identity as persons and as a community when he became our sacrificial lamb,

whose blood saved us from eternal death. Hopefully we heard this said in church, in homilies and textbooks: that to celebrate the Eucharist is to relive those moments in history when Jesus, after breaking bread with his disci-ples, gave himself up to death and was raised from the dead for us. The Church tells us that what our Sunday Mass is to each week as its high point, so the Sacred Triduum - the litur-gy of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter - is to the whole year as its apex, its finest and fullest expression of worship and belief. So, what will you be doing this week, on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter? Have you thought about joining us to honor God's truly greatest gift: the sacrifice of Jesus in loving surrender to his Father? We spend hours and hours watching TV, playing video games and surfing the internet. All we see and hear are stories of people desper-ately trying to find love and hope, or just escape from the boredom and emptiness of life. Holy week offers us infi-nitely better! Join us Holy Thursday evening at 7:30 as each of our parishes honors the Supper of the Lord, with the beautiful ritual washing of feet and the procession of the Holy Eu-charist to its place of repose. On this night we show our solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Hispanic community (St. John's) or the Brazilian community (St. Thomas). How very sad and painful it is that some will choose not to pray with us that night because it bothers them to hear God worshipped in a language other than their own. On Good Friday, come and relive the Passion of Jesus. Venerate his cross, receive his Body, mourn his death, feel the horrid silence of his grave. Then share the splendid Easter Vigil. Be renewed with fi re and water and song and the remembrance of the greatest miracle of all time: the resurrection of Jesus, the one event that offers us a hope that nothing else in life - no money, no fame, no power on earth - can buy. This is God's most tremendous gift to us: the triumph of his Son, Jesus Christ over sin and death. We will celebrate almost 2000 years of grace and mercy in three days. What could be more important, more inspiring, more worthwhile for us and for our wounded and troubled world than to love and pray with one another, to raise our voices in one cho-rus of praise to God who in his mercy has given us eternal life! Please come! Pray, listen, sing, be fed, and put God back in the center of your life! It's your choice. God bless. Fr. JohnFr. JohnFr. JohnFr. John

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 25, 2018

Padre JohnPadre JohnPadre JohnPadre John

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 25, 2018

(Ioannes Paulus PP. II, Evangelium vitae n.51)

Meet Father DeVeer−A steadfast ministry built on respect for allFather Richard “Dick” DeVeer grew up in loving family that instilled the foundational values of his ministry: respect and joy.

For more than ve decades, Father DeVeer embraced the priest’s role to carry Christ into people’s hearts. He galvanized teens to march with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Boston. As a re chaplain, he answered the call to serve at Ground Zero after 9/11. Recognizing the needs of the most vulnerable in Haiti, he and his parishioners created the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation to provide critical healthcare to the “poorest of the poor.”

Today, Father DeVeer is very active and remains close to the families from his previous parishes. These pivotal moments and lasting friendships demonstrate how priests like Father DeVeer stand by us when we need them most.

To help ensure that they receive necessary care and support as they live out their vocation, please give to the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust through the special Easter collection.
