Dear Folks, Happy Ascension Thursday/Sunday. Folks often ask why the change from Thursday to Sunday for Ascension and I explain it was for pragmatic reasons in the United States. In the Western part of the country, Catholics find a clergy in shorter supply and older in age. That leaves many of the priests to be “Circuit Riders” covering two

or three parishes in a loops of 200-300 miles every weekend. The bishops of the country thought it might help to alleviate the fatigue factor on the distant clergy if they moved Ascension to Sunday. Well, that may seem fine for the Western United States, until some of the clerics in the Eastern part of the country asked for the same benefit. Though Bishop Loverde opposed the switch to Sunday he found all of the dioceses surrounding Arlington switching the Ascension Feast Day to the following Sunday. With that, Arlington followed the line of other dioceses. And now you know the rest of the story. The Youth Group is in need of an additional contractor to join them at Work Camp this Summer. If we have any contractors available and interested in going please contact our parish youth director, Mrs. Allison Hagert , at the parish office 540-347-2922 ext 212. Many many thanks. At the current time the Youth Group party going to Work Camp will be building picnic tables in anticipation of going to Work Camp in the coming Summer. Stay tuned. I hope to see them auction off a few of the tables. Say, did anyone happen to go to the recent play at Fauquier High School. It was titled, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” It was fantastic! Very very intense with both singing and dancing that last for three hours. Our own Megan McCoy, sophomore, was among the host of dancers. You can see the months of preparation and practice really payed off. Well done Fauquier High. Well done. Just a heads up for future dates: School closes on June 10th, at 11:30 AM. Parish Catholic Faith Camp: June 13-17th We are praying for the Dominicans to return. Blessing of the Motorcycles: Sunday May 22nd, following the 12:30 Mass. Fr. Gould takes the vets fly fishing on Memorial Day, leave at Noon. Let us pray for one another. Collegiate answer: The priest of St. John the Evangelist Parish who died of sunstroke was Fr. Patrick Donelan. As he was travelling by boat from Washington to Aquia Creek, near Fredericskburg, he was caught in the Virginia heat. He attended All Hallows Missionary Seminary in Ireland. Collegiate Question: Just when you thought you heard it all.’From the Vatican Observatory’ What order of nuns helped map and catalog nearly half a million stars for the Vatican's part in an international survey of the night sky? Good hunting.

Fr. Gould

Greetings! Please allow me to congratulate the following Paul VI High School students, who are St. John the Evangelist parishioners, for their 3rd marking period Honor Roll achievement: Honor

Roll: Jennie Catts, Candace Gearhart, Catherine Pozo-Olano, Juan Carlos Pozo-Olano and Andrew Toske. Principal's Honor Roll: Madison Barnett, John Mullin, Madelyn Page, Callie Redmond, Abigail Reeves, and Michael Toske. The parish is very proud of these fine students! Since Vacation Bible School will commence from June 13-17 (Mon. to Fri.) at the elementary school, the last day for St. John School elementary students will be June 10. We will have an early dismissal at 11:30 AM. an there will be no Extended Day services. Of course, in keeping with a long standing tradition at SJES, the Carousel ice cream truck, sponsored by Jo Maybach, will provide ice cream for all students and faculty. Thank you, Mrs. Maybach, and we all hope to see you in that truck on June 10! Our standardized Terra Nova testing has ended and we have also completed the Religion on- line Acre testing. This week the 8th graders will complete the World Language Exam in Spanish. Last week we welcomed Mrs. Fine back to school after an extended illness. Her students and colleagues missed her very much, however, the combination of Mary Conlan teaching Science, and Chris Galvin teaching Algebra, filled in admirably. We are continuing to send out donation requests for our Memorial Giving Tree fund raising effort. Many thanks to those parishioners, parents and community members who have contributed already. Our goal is $100,000, and we have collected $10,000 as of April 30th. A donation amount of $500, or more, will earn the donor an engraved leaf on the Giving Tree in the school lobbey. We thank you for your generosity! Have a great week and God bless you.

Are You Interested in Learning more

about the Bible? New this Year!

Study the Bible at your own pace and at home.

Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below.

Whenyou visit the parish website www.sje1.org and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website.

These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209.

The first Study, started in October, was “The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation.” The 24 lessons in

“The Bible Timeline” guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative.

In 2013, “Matthew: The King and his Kingdom,” another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the

Scripture narrative in “The Bible Timeline.” The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus.

Following Matthew was “Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom” **in 2014. This study shows how the Church

continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon

In the early summer of 2015 we offered “Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother” in one day.

This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives.

In the fall of 2015 “Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come” an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately

connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass.

In 2016 the Bible Study group covered “James: Pearls for Wise Living” described as a “book of wisdom.” James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the

fledgling church in the face of persecution.

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
