We reach out to those in the parish and in the community by performing Spiritual Works of Mercy, as assigned and under the direction of our pastor. The Legion of Mary has been active at St. John's Church since October, 1994. There are two types of membership in the Legion: Active Membership which involves attendance at weekly meetings centered around prayer and the study of the Legion handbook as well as the performance of a specified spiritual work of mercy weekly. Year of St. Joseph: Beginning December 8th of this year and continuing until December 8th of 2021, the Holy Father has established a Year of St. Joseph. The Father of the Holy Family is the patron saint of the Universal Church and the family among other things. Pope Francis wants the faithful to see in St. Joseph an example to follow and a means to “strengthen their life of Faith in the full fulfillment of God’s will.” The Pope’s decree continues, “All the faithful will thus have the opportunity to commit themselves, with prayers and good works, to obtain with the help of St. Joseph, head of the celestial Family of Nazareth, comfort and relief from the serious human and social tribulations that today grip the contemporary world.” Plenary Indulgences may be obtained this year by: 1) Meditating for 30 minutes on the Our Father. 2) Attend a spiritual retreat that includes a meditation on St. Joseph. 3) Recite the Holy Rosary with one’s family. (or if engaged, with one’s future spouse.) 4) Perform a Corporal or Spiritual Work of Mercy. 5) Entrust our day and/or work to St. Joseph, invoking his protection and intercession. 6) Pray to St. Joseph for persecuted Christians. 7) Recite any approved prayer or act of piety in honor of St. Joseph. 8) For the elderly, sick, and dying: recite an act of piety in St. Joseph’s honor, entrusting our lives and discomforts to him. On the first Saturday in May last this year, our parish was consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and to St. Joseph. The consecration prayer to St. Joseph: “O beloved St. Joseph, adopt our parish as thy family and we, the parishioners of St. John the evangelist, as your children. Take charge of our salvation: watch over us by night and day; preserve us from the occasion of sin; obtain for us purity of body and soul. Through thy intercession with Jesus, grant us a spirit of sacrifice, humility, self-denial, burning love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, and a sweet tender love for Mary, our mother. St. Joseph, be with us living, be with us dying, and obtain a favorable judgment from Jesus, our merciful Savior. Amen Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us. St. Joseph, pray for us. Advent Confessions: We will have daily confessions throughout Advent, ending December 20th. Along with our normal confession schedule, we are adding evening confessions Monday through Friday at 8:00 pm. There will be no confessions the week of the 21st through the 25th. Take advantage of the opportunity sooner when the lines are short, rather than later when the lines become long. “You desire that which exceeds my humble powers, but I trust in the compassion and mercy of the All-powerful God.” St. Stephen

Greetings, I offer the following prayer during this time of
preparation:
In this season of Advent, let us be men and women of hope. As we bring our energy and creativity to handle the daily challenges of the ministry of leadership, may be always entrust our efforts to your provident care. Keep us faithful and help us to support and encourage the good works of those who depend on us for wise counsel, as our words give advice and direction. May our lives give witness and example to your deep love for the children and the families we serve. Amen. Author: Anonymous

Capacity Management for
Christmas Masses
Given the anticipated large attendance at our Christmas Masses and the limitations defined by Virginia state guidelines, ushers will be monitoring the number people at each Mass and will be required to close off any additional entry once the church has reached its limited capacity.
For only the 4:00pm and 6:00pm Christmas Eve Masses, Mercy Hall will be made available for overflow attendance. Those two Masses will be live-streamed in Mercy Hall and on St. John’s youtube.com channel. If Mercy Hall reaches its limited capacity for the two Christmas Eve Masses, the ushers there will also be required to close off additional entry and people will be informed that they can attend an alternative Mass or they can live stream the Mass. A deacon will distribute Holy Communion to those in attendance in Mercy Hall and those who come forward from the parking lot.
As we anticipate families coming to St. John’s from other parishes, we highly recommend that you arrive early for the Christmas Eve Masses or consider attending one of the Christmas Day Masses. Mercy Hall will not be used for the Midnight Mass over flow and that Mass will not be live-streamed.
We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding.

Upcoming Events 29 January — March for Life (additional details pending) Oktoberfest Round-up Oktoberfest 2020 was a huge success on many counts. It was great having so many parishioners and members of the community join us at this event. Because of the numerous health and safety protocols put into place, there were no COVID outbreaks associated with the Oktoberfest (public health data shows none for the area in the 2 weeks following the event). Additionally, the Oktoberfest was able to raise over $32,000 (after expenses) in much needed funds. Thanks to all the tireless work done by so many coordinators and volunteers led up by Allan Dianic. Interested in joining the Knights of Columbus? Are you or someone you know looking for opportunities to live out your Catholic Faith as a Catholic gentleman? Would you like to learn more about the Knights of Columbus? If so, please contact us at [email protected].
