The Word of the Lord

First Reading: Isaiah 35:4-7a Isaiah tells the people to be strong and unafraid. God will save his people, and the blind will see, the deaf will hear, and the lame will walk. Streams will come forth in the desert, the sandy ground will become springs of water.

Second Reading: James 2:1-5 James encourages the people to never show favoritism. He discusses an usher who escorted a rich man to the best seat, while ignoring a poor man. God chose poor people to be rich in faith, so we should never judge people by their riches.

Gospel: Mark 7:31-37 Some people brought a deaf man who could not speak to Jesus and begged him to lay his hand on the man. Jesus opened the man’s ears and cured his speech impediment. He ordered the people not to tell anyone, but they were too amazed to keep this to themselves.

St. John’s Family Page

He put his finger in the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue…and said to him, “Ephphatha!” – that is, “Be opened” Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared. The prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, as we read in today’s gospel. Jesus cures the deaf man with a speech impediment. Jesus speaks the words: “Be opened“ to us as well…so that our ears will clearly hear God speaking to us in the Sacred Scriptures, in prayer and in our everyday encounters with our brothers and sisters in need…so that we will then respond, taking action – being a living witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Sometimes we temporarily lose our hearing, from a build-up of wax or “swimmer’s ear” or from something else. When this happens, we take action to regain our hearing. We may even see a doctor. Sin can cause a spiritual deafness to God’s voice. The Holy Spirit inspires us to go to Confession, where our relationship with God is restored and we thereby regain our “spiritual hearing”. And people brought him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. Interestingly, we see that the deaf man did not come to Jesus on his own, but others brought him. Can you think of a time when someone led you to Jesus? Maybe it was an invitation to join a group at church or become more involved in the life of our parish or through an act of kindness. Let us also bring others to Jesus! May God bless us always! Deacon Mike
