Today is the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. Epiphany means manifestation. It is on this day that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, is revealed as a sign of universal salvation. Officially Christmas is not over. It was celebrated in ancient times as an important complement to The Nativity. In fact, the recommendation of the Church is that on this day those who display a crèche, a nativity or manger scene, should replace the shepherds and sheep with the Magi and their likely animals on which they traveled as well as their gifts. However, that is all secondary to the real meaning of this day. At Christ-mas the Messiah Jesus was revealed to the shepherds, who were Jewish. But on this day the Lord is revealed to all nations and to the Gentiles (represented by the Magi). We are all familiar with the star the Magi followed, but we need to understand all that is happening and what it means. This all repre-sents the Light of Christ, a Light which today we honor and commemorate. We are called to be the Light of Christ right now to those around us and to those with whom we come in contact. That way we can be the disciples Christ wants us to be. The poet William Cullen Bryant captures the significance of the star the Magi followed very well when he wrote, O Father, may that Holy Star, Grow every year more bright, And send its glorious beams afar, To fill the world with light.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Classes will be held on Monday, January 8, at 5:30pm.

No classes on Monday, January 15 - Martin Luther King Day.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION Last Sunday’s Christmas collection was $378 and together with the Christmas Day collection totaled $4,816 for which we are deeply grateful to all our parishioners. Perhaps it was due to the inclement weather, but this was our lowest Christmas collection in many years. This is the birthday of Jesus and our gifts, which we offer on the anniversary of his birth, are an expression of our love for Him and His Church. If anyone was not prepared to submit their Christmas offering and wishes to contribute now, please do so this month. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Happy New Year! Stewardship Note: Notice the order of events in the Magi’s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share!

The Epiphany of The Lord January 7, 2018

….they fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh… - Matthew 2:11

NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH In this new year, let us gather at our Basilica to ask our Patron for God’s blessings on our fam-ily and loved ones on our journey of faith for 2018. Please join us on Wednesday, January 10, at 7pm for our weekly novena and devotion to St. Joseph. Mass will be offered for those who print their intentions legibly on forms placed in the Our Lady of Czestochowa Chapel. Our Lec-tors will carry the statue of St. Joseph into the sanctuary. We appreciate your donations.

HAPPY RETIREMENT, VIRGINIA!

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the retirement of Mrs. Virginia

Woznicki from our rectory staff. Her hard work, commitment, and dedication of the past 15+ years to St. Joseph Basilica are worthy of gratitude and admiration. She handled many complicated tasks in our rectory office with much patience and expertise. She was a very resourceful and dedicated employee with a nice personality who will be greatly missed. We wish Virginia well, good health, and a very en-joyable retirement!

DONATIONS We gratefully appreciate a donation of $1,000 to St. Joseph Basilica from Father Charles Borowski in a spirit of gratitude for the educational and spiritual formation of him and his family from St. Joseph School. Father Charlie, his brother, and sister attended St. Joseph School. It is, indeed, gratifying to receive such a dona-tion from a dedicated alumni. We also gratefully acknowledge a donation of $500 to St. Jo-seph Basilica given by our faithful parishioner, Diane Sarasin. We are most grateful to our dedicated parish members for their con-tinuous prayers and support. May you enjoy God’s Blessings in the New Year. Parish members, Mr. and Mrs. George Baldowski, have do-nated $3,000 for the benefit of St. Joseph School. Their generosity is very much appreciated and gratefully valued. Their dedication to the St. Joseph Basilica family is exemplary and most reward-ing. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Baldowski. HELP OUR BASILICA SAVE ENERGY!

We would like to bring to your attention a very important practical issue. Our church is losing heat when we do not take care to close the outside doors (as well as the inside doors) when we enter and exit. We do not want to heat the neighborhood nor do we want to waste energy and money. We can-not stress enough how important this is to our heating costs! During these extremely cold winter days, it

is even more critical to pay attention to this simple task of closing the door behind you. The new heating unit is working well, as expected, and our heating system cannot supply adequate heat if the doors are constantly open. You have all donated for a new heating unit and we would like to make sure we have many years of uninterrupted usage. Thank you!

UPDATE ON PARISH CENTER/GYMNASIUM

We would like to report that our December Monthly Envelope Donations for the Parish Center/Gym were $4,604. I am very thankful for the significant increase in donations over previous months. As you can see, the work is progressing at an accelerated pace despite the extreme cold and frost. Current project status includes installation of gable and end walls; downspouts and building trim have been completed; the concrete gym slab base and walls for the stage and stairs were poured; window installa-tion has begun; domestic water and sprinkler lines were connected into the existing main; and conduits for the electric lines were installed , inspected, and backfilled. At this final stage of the construction process there are several items that require funding such as a fully integrated security sys-tem, sound system (gym and stage), fireproof curtains and over-head lighting for the stage, appliances for the new kitchen and furnishings for the dining area. May all of you who have made donations towards the students of St. Joseph School in the spirit of Christmas enjoy peace and good health from the newborn Messiah of the world.

R.C.I.A. During the Christmas season many people realize the impor-tance of a Catholic faith in their journey of life. Many of them ask for a union of the Church through a special program called R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). This program will be held very soon. On Sunday, Feb. 11, there will be registration after each Mass. Please come to the sacristy or to the rectory to register for this important step in your life. Several sessions will begin on Monday, February 12, at 5:30pm. Please contact the rec-tory for additional information (508) 943-0467.

EPIPHANY Blessed chalk and incense are available at the front of our Basil-ica. As you enter or exit the church, please take an envelope to bless your home. Using the chalk, the year and initials of the Three Kings (Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar) may be inscribed above your entry and exit doors as follows:

20+C+M+B+18 Following the inscription, a simple prayer may be said: Loving God, bless this household. May we be blessed with health, good-ness of heart, gentleness, and abiding in your will. We ask this through Christ our Savior. Amen. The chalking of the doors is a centuries-old practice throughout the world. It is, however, an easy tradition to adopt, and a great practice whereby we dedicate our year to God from its very outset, asking His blessing on our homes and on all who live, work, or visit there.

HEATING SYSTEM DONATIONS

Last week’s collections totaled $1,600. The generosity of our parishioners cannot be emphasized enough. Thank you for your greatly appreciated contributions! Mrs. Shirley Piechota, Mr. An-drew Kubicki, Ms. Anna Kokosinska, Mr. & Mrs. Krzysztof Trzus-kot, Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Hast, Mr. & Mrs. Anthony Kondek, Mr. & Mrs. Mariusz Chmielewski, Mr. & Mrs. Richard Parslow, Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Gajewski, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Wolak, Ms. Christine Dudek, Mrs. Jean Duclos, Mrs. Sylvia Kozlowski, Mr. & Mrs. John Hester, and Mr. & Mrs. John Sujdak. Our collection total has now reached $39,060. We wish many blessings to all who have donated to our Basilica’s heating system. Your donations give us much to be thankful for in this Christmas season.

PIEROGI MARATHON RESULTS We are pleased to announce the net proceeds of our pierogi-making marathon event. An amount of $5,100 was realized after expenses from the sale of the pierogi. This sum was applied to our Diocesan Obligations. We are grateful to all our impressive and very hard-working pierogi designers. You worked hard and long to benefit your Basilica. Many thanks go out to Cindy Iwanski, John Gasparik, and Marlene Plaza as well as to each and every one of you who participated. You are truly awesome!

Czym jest uroczystość Objawienia Pańskiego? Można to lepiej zrozumieć, wczytując się w Ewangelię o mędrcach z dalekiej krainy. Przybywają oni do nowo narodzonego Jezusa i rozpoznają w Nim króla, Mesjasza.

Wiara to przecież droga, a my po niej idziemy. Kto uczciwie szuka Boga, z pewnością w końcu Go znajdzie.

INVITATION FOR ST. JOSEPH ORCHESTRA The musical traditions of our parish are very rich. The many years of hard work of the organists, priests, and parishioners continually result in the fact that there are four choirs active in our parish which actively engage in various ceremonies. At this beginning of the new year we would like a small chamber orchestra to be added to our parish which would add splendor to the more important festivities as well as promote our parish during guest performances. We would like to invite all parishioners who play musical instruments to join this project. Age does not matter. This invitation is addressed to both Americans and Poles. If you would like to co-create an orchestra or have questions, please contact our organist, Karol Jaje, at the following email address: [email protected] or in person during the office hours of the parish office. Everyone is welcome!

Dziękujemy wszystkim, którzy zaangażowali się w robienie pierogów. Szczególne podziękowania kierujemy do Cindi Iwanski, John Gasparik i Marlen Plaza.

Aktualnie prowadzone prace obejmują instalację ścian szczytowych i końcowych. Ponadto: rury spustowe i elementy wykończeniowe budynku zostały zzamontowane; wylano posadzkę betonową; rozpoczęła się instalacja okien; instalacje wodne zostały podłączone do głównej magistrali; przewody linii elektrycznych zostały zainstalowane.

Swoje ofiary złożyły następujące osoby: Shirley Piechota, Andrew Kubicki, Anna Kokosinska, Krzysztof Trzuskot, Leonard Hast, Anthony Kondek, Mariusz Chmielewski, Richard Parslow, Leonard Gajewski, Robert Wolak, Christine Dudek, Jean Duclos, Sylvia Kozlowski, John Hester, oraz John Sujdak. W całości zebraliśmy już $39060. Serdecznie dziękujemy.

ZWYCIĘZCY CASH CALENDAR W pierwszym tygodniu styczniowej edycji Cash Calendar nagrody wylosowali: 1 stycznia: Denise Gorski, $25; 2 stycznia: Julia Kitka, $25; 3 stycznia: Genevieve Pioppi $50; 4 stycznia: Frank Czechowski $25; 5 stycznia: Shirley i Frank Sabaj, $25; 6 stycznia: John Walalis, $50. W odpowiedzi na takie pragnienia Kościół proponuje program RSIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults – Ryt Chrześcijańskiej Inicjacji dla Dorosłych).
