LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Isaiah 53: 10-11

Through his suffering, my servant shall justify many.

The LORD was pleased to crush him in infirmity. If he gives his life as an offering for sin, he shall see his descendants in a long life, and the will of the LORD shall be accomplished through him. Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days; through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear.

PSALM RESPONSE Psalm 33: 4-5, 18-19, 20, 22 Lumen Christi Missal

1. Upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are trustworthy. He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full.

2. See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness, To deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine.

3. Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield. May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us who have put our hope in you.

SECOND READING Hebrews 4: 14-16

Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace.

Brothers and sisters:Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Mark 10: 45

The Son of Man came to serveand to give his life as a ransom for many.

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 10: 35-45

The Son of Man came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” He

Page 4: SAINT JOSEPH CATHEDRAL

replied, “What do you wish me to do for you?” They answered him, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” They said to him, “We can.” Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

HOMILY

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

[all bow during the following two lines:]and by the Holy Spiritwas incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the deadand his kingdom will have no end.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sinsand I look forward to the resurrection of the deadand the life of the world to come. Amen.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON [8:00, 12:30, 5:15] Mode 2

[Vigil, 10:30] Domine Dominus noster Mode 2Psalm 8: 2ab

@ For Catholics who are receiving Holy Communion, please bow your head before receiving communion as a sign of reverence for the real presence of Christ.

@ We welcome non-Catholics to this celebration of the Eucharist but because we believe that the Eucharist is a sign of the oneness of faith, life and worship, members of other churches with whom we are not fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. We ask for you to remain seated during the communion rite and join us in prayer for Christian unity and peace for the human family.

THANKSGIVING [Vigil] Au soir Louis Vierne (1870-1937)

Domine Dominus noster, quam admirabile est nomen

tuum in universa terra!Vs. Quoniam elevata est

magnificentia tua super caelos.

O Lord our ruler, how admirable is your namein all the earth!Vs. For thy magnificence is elevatedabove all the heavens.

A nos péchés humains,ô Vierge, sois clémente!

Since the night is rising in the heavens and in our hearts, since the hour is comewhen each makes the countof their labours, of their sorrows,of their bitternesses. We pray to you again, sincethe night is rising!O Virgin,be merciful at the final Angelusthat cradles the sleepof the world in torment! That we may not think any longer of the worries of the day!To our human sins,o Virgin, be merciful!

ANTHEM [10:30] Praise the Lord, O My Soul Ned Rorem Psalm 146 (born 1923)

Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul.I will praise the Lord as long as I live;I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. Put not your trust in rulersnor in any child of earth, for there is no help in them. When they breathe their last, they return to earth, and in that day their thoughts perish.Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help, whose hope is in the Lordtheir God; who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them;who keeps his promise forever; who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to those who hunger. The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind;the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous;the Lord cares for the stranger. He sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. The Lord shall reign forever, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah!

FINAL BLESSING AND DISMISSAL
