Monday is the feast of St. Benedict (480-c. 550), one of the patron saints
of Europe and a key figure in both Catholic spirituality and Western culture. Almost all of the little we know about his life comes from a recounting of it in the Dialogues of Pope St. Gregory the Great and from Benedict’s own Rule of Monks, a detailed, practical guide to monasticism distilled from his studies of earlier, mostly Eastern, writings. Benedict was the son of a noble Italian family, or at least of a wealthy one. He was sent to Rome to study law and rhetoric, but discontinued his education because he was disturbed by the immoral ways he found there, and so, as Gregory expressed it, “He withdrew the foot he had placed on the doorstep of the world.” Benedict then took up the life of a hermit for three years at Subiaco, acquiring such a reputation for holiness that when a group of hermits to the north, at Vicovaro, were looking for a leader after the death of their former one, they invited Benedict to assume the role. But things did not go well. The hermits chaffed under Benedict’s discipline and austerities, and attempted to make a change by poisoning his wine. Benedict, somehow sensing they did not want his help, decided to resume his solitary life. But a new set of followers gathered around him who were more accepting of his guidance, and Benedict went on to form several monasteries with them. In time, he took a small group of his disciples to Monte Cassino, a hill 1,150 feet above the small village of Cassino, about halfway between Rome and Naples. There, on the site of a former temple dedicated to the Roman god Jupiter, he built a monastery where he and his monks lived together instead of in separate huts. Monte Cassino is still the spiritual home of the Benedictines. (After its destruction by bombings in World War II, it has been completely rebuilt.) The times were terrible when Benedict started his foundation. The Roman Empire in the West had already disintegrated, especially from the pressure brought on by barbarian invaders such as the Huns and Visigoths. But Benedict’s efforts eventually led to very needed good results, as his monks began to rebuild a troubled and chaotic Europe. John Henry Newman once described their work in these eloquent words:
The new world which he helped to create was a growth rather than a structure. Silent men were observed about the country, or discovered in the forest, digging, clearing, and building; and other silent men, not seen, were sitting in the cold cloister, tiring their eyes, while they painfully deciphered and copied and re-copied the manuscripts which they had saved. By degrees the woody swamp became a hermitage, a Religious house, a farm, an abbey, a village, a seminary, a school of learning, and a city. Roads and bridges connected it with other abbeys and cities, which had similarly grown up; and what the haughty Alaric or fierce Attila had broken to pieces, these patient, meditative men had brought together and made to live again.
The rule of life Benedict created for his monks, which became influential all through the West, was highly disciplined, but moderate compared to Eastern monastic ways. The abbot, who headed each community, was to be obeyed without question, but he was expected to govern with kindness. When important decisions loomed, every monk, even the youngest, was to be consulted beforehand. The communities lived in simplicity and poverty. The diet was vegetarian, but food was plentiful—and if a monk became ill, he was allowed to have meat. Each day, the members spent four hours at community prayer (mostly the Divine Office), four hours at private prayer (with an emphasis on reading), and six to eight hours at manual labor (although with sensible attention to the capacities of the individual monks), a regimen summarized by the famous Benedictine motto, “Ora et labora” (“prayer and work”). It is no wonder that sixteen Popes have taken the name Benedict. Benedict was someone whose impact ranks with that of the greatest saints.
