SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

“I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.” Psalm 104:33

King George III, Opera legends Cecilia Bartoli and Robert Merrill, actors Bruce Dern and Angelina Jolie, and author Robert Fulghum all have one thing in common: they were born on June 4. But for the Saint Joseph Parish community and countless others, the most prominent person born on that day is Peter Greco.

Peter passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 22 at the age of 57. Peter looked a decade younger partly due to his boundless energy and faith, his Jos. A. Bank suits, his perfect haircuts and his shining smile.

Peter is irreplaceable, and his absence will be felt in ways we cannot begin to comprehend.

One of my earliest memories of Peter was at a Music Ministry Christmas party given shortly after I was hired. Peter brought his own piano (he would refer to this as “BYOP”) and volunteered to be the evening’s entertainment. Peter remarked that he didn’t intend to “steal my thunder” to which I replied, “You sound great. Go for it!” At this party, a choir member casually mentioned to him that she loved Barry Manilow. Peter responded by performing the entire Even Now album, in order. He also played Clair de Lune and many Broadway favorites beautifully.

It’s almost unheard of for two musicians who play the same instruments (organ/piano/guitar) to exist in the same ensemble. The potential for clashing is overwhelming as you occupy the same musical “space.” Not the case for Rich (Leavy), Peter and Monroe, dubbed RPM by Peter, which began when an anonymous donor contributed to the Saint Joseph Music Ministry. Since March 2012, RPM has played every Sunday at the 12:00 pm Mass as well at the annual parish Christmas concert. It is a testament to Peter’s gifts and sensitive musicianship that we thrived and inspired each other

to play better. Our mutual goal was to give glory to God, be appropriate to the music and text of the hymns, and encourage participation by the congregation. Along the way we managed to smile a lot.

In addition to the 12:00 pm Mass, Peter played the 10:30 Mass in Mary’s Chapel for over 20 years, the Miraculous Medal Novena every Monday evening, and was the Music Minister for our Youth Mass. One Sunday, while playing his beautiful prelude music prior to the 12:00 pm Mass, a parishioner tapped Peter on the shoulder and asked (something like) “May 15, 1957?” to which Peter replied while still playing, “Wednesday.” Peter’s gift with dates and numbers wasn’t a parlor trick. His texts, emails and comments about people’s upcoming birthdays, wedding anniversaries and noteworthy dates from history were his way of celebrating life and those he loved. On my beloved mother-in-law’s birthday, Peter would text me each year that he was including her in his prayers. I’m sure he did this for all he held dear to him. Peter lived the Gospel and teachings of Jesus. He is in every note I play each Sunday and we are all blessed to have known him. Please keep Peter’s sister Cindy and his family in your prayers.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 8, 2020

On Saturday, February 29, 2020 Saint Joseph Church was filled to capacity. Not a seat remained empty, not even those in the choir loft. Everyone present had come to remember and honor a man of whom it could truly be said “was a good man, filled with the holy Spirit and faith.” (Acts 11:24) Peter Greco was indeed such a man. Peter, who passed away suddenly on February 22, was a member of our parish music ministry since 1996. He was beloved by all who knew him. And even if you didn’t know him personally, you knew his glorious music. The bible quote mentioned above continues, “And a large number of people was added to the Lord.” That can also be said of the effect of Peter’s music: it’s beauty touched our hearts, nourished our souls, and brought us all closer to God. When Peter’s dear sister, Cindy, stood up at the funeral to bravely and eloquently give a family remembrance of Peter, she spoke of how the best gift she ever received was when her parents brought baby Peter home from the hospital. She added that Peter continued to be a gift to her all his life. “Gift” was the perfect word to describe Peter. He himself was gifted by God with an amazing talent. No one knew, when a 5-year-old Peter started to learn piano after hearing his cousin Lisa practice, that he would become a true musical genius. Peter was a self-taught musician who played 14 instruments entirely by ear. His talent made him in demand at parties and celebrations, at nursing homes and restaurants, in a duo with Domenick Panfile, in a jazz group and in a rock band. But the place he may have been the happiest playing and singing was in church. Peter often shared a favorite quote attributed to St. Augustine that “he who sings, prays twice.” He loved the feeling of church music, both traditional and folk. He once beautifully summed up how the music of our faith made him feel when he pointed to the statue of the Madonna behind the choir and said, “I think the Lord’s music makes the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus smile.” Peter played for many years at our 10:30 Sunday Mass in Mary’s Chapel. He played for our 12 noon Sunday Mass as well, joined by our music director Monroe Quinn and drummer Rich Leavy in a trio Peter dubbed RPM (which you can read more about in

    (continued above)

Monroe’s moving tribute on page 2). His music graced our weekly Miraculous Medal Novena. He also served in the music ministries of Sacread Heart Church in Haworth and St. Therese in Cresskill. Peter clearly took to heart the words of Psalm 33: Sing to him a new song; skillfully play with joyful chant. For the Lord’s word is upright; all his works are trustworthy. He loves justice and right. The earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

Peter’s music touched old and young alike. In addition to playing at the Saint Joseph School kinder-garten graduation for 25 years, he helped the little ones rehearse and even rewrote lyrics to popular songs to make them a perfect fit for the young singers. In recent years, Peter had become the musical director for our monthly Teen Mass working with the youth of our parish. The teens immediately recognized Peter’s gifts and offered their own tribute to Peter with such comments as, “You were extremely talented in so many ways. You impacted my life and many others’ greatly.” And “you brought joy to everyone around you.” Peter Greco was not just a gift to his family: he was a gift to all of us. As his obituary so beautifully said, he was “an accomplished professional musician who generously shared his exceptional talents throughout the community, touching countless lives with his passion for music and love of God, family and innumerable friends. He brought genuine and limitless joy, light and love to whomever he met.” It is so fitting that Peter’s funeral Mass, with its wonderful music and scripture readings celebrating God’s love and how we must love one another, became a gift to all of us in attendance. As Monsignor Hubba said, it was a “moving experience and a heartfelt and affectionate tribute to Peter.” And when we heard these words in the Gospel, it felt as though they were a message directly from Peter himself: “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you.” Thank you, Peter, for loving us, for sharing all your remarkable gifts with us. Thank you for being a gift yourself. We are all the better for having had you in our lives. As we prayed in the Prayer of the Faithful, “We give thanks for the love and kindness you showed in your life, Peter; may you know the perfection and fulfillment of that love in heaven.”

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

    FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Praying is an amazingly helpful way to deal with life’s varied challenges, all across the range from stagnation to frantic busyness or

even to frightening inner turmoil. There are many ways to pray and, of course, it is supremely beneficial to see how Jesus prayed, which the greatly respected scholar Robert Louis Wilken summarizes well:

Jesus sought solitude and often retreated by himself to be alone with God in prayer. In the course of three chapters the evangelist Luke says that Jesus went off to be “alone,” departed for “a lonely place,” “withdrew to the wilderness and prayed,” and went to “the mountain to pray” (Luke 4:42; 5:16, 6:12). Mark reports that after healing many people, the next morning Jesus rose “a great while before day and went out to a lonely place and there he prayed” (Mark 1:35). More than anything else the frequency and intensity of his prayer gives evidence of his closeness to God, whom he called Father.

One way Jesus expressed his friendship for his closest associates was by teaching them how to pray, whether it was by giving them the inexhaustible treasure of the “Our Father” or as today’s Gospel relates, by inviting some of them to accompany him to a mountain setting to witness his Transfiguration. Some of the saints have experienced heights of Mysticism in their prayer, something many other people have at times tasted. But more often, prayer is far more ordinary in its outward expression. And seeking out places that are conducive to prayer is a fine idea, even if we can only take advantage of them every now and then. Our churches are meant to be special places for prayer. Their decorative features (such as their windows and statues) can help transport us to the spiritual realm. And the presence of Our Lord in the tabernacle makes even the most humbly adorned Catholic church a favored place for encountering God. Before her conversion to the Catholic faith, St. Edith Stein visited Frankfurt’s cathedral with friends and saw something that affected her deeply:

We went into the cathedral for a few moments, and as we stood there in respectful silence, a woman came in with her shopping basket and knelt down in one of the pews to say a short prayer. That was something completely new to me. In the synagogue, as in the Protestant churches I had visited, people went in at the

    (continued above)

time of the service. But here was someone coming into the empty church in the middle of a day’s work as if to talk with a friend. I have never been able to forget that.

Our churches are not only monuments to the belief and generosity of past parishioners, but sacred places of plentiful spiritual opportunities.

    IMPORTANT DIRECTIONS FROM CARDINAL TOBIN

RE: PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS AND THE MASS

In light of the coronavirus, the uncertainty of how wide-spread and impactful it is and/or could be, and as a pre-caution, Cardinal Tobin has directed the following until further notice:

If you are sick or experiencing symptoms of sickness, you are NOT obligated to attend Mass, and even out of charity you ought not to attend.

The Sign of Peace should be exchanged without physical contact. A smile and nod or a friendly wave are acceptable substitutes for a handshake.

Distribution of Holy Communion to the faithful from the Cup has been suspended at this time.

We offer our prayers for all those suffering from the current outbreak and for scientists, health professionals and public officials who are serving the common good at this difficult time.

    MESSAGE FROM SAINT JOSEPH SCHOOL

Dr. Paula Valenti, Principal of Saint Joseph School, has indicated that, should a need arise to address the coronavirus and the continuity of instruction, teachers will be posting information to their blogs (at sjsusa.org) and the school and parish communities will be kept updated. A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR SHAWL MINISTRY

To Saint Joseph Church’s Shawl Ministry,

Through the expenses of money and time, the St. Joseph Shawl Ministry provided warmth through winter by knitting and crocheting scarfs, hats and blankets for those who have no one. Getting a gift is more than James and many like him can only imagine. The ladies of your Shawl Ministry do this because it

needs to be done. Unfortunately, James passed away shortly after this picture was taken, but fortunately he knew and still knows he is loved. To the he Ladies of the Ministry, bless you all: Agnes O'Gara, Cheryl Helbig, Eileen Scrivani, Barbara Piersa, Gail Fabiano, Jan Burns, Jeannie Wieme, Joanne Hudes, Katherine Norian, Lorraine Smith, Marie D. GIRL SCOUTS EARN "MARY, THE FIRST DISCIPLE"AWARD

Two Saint Joseph parishioners and students of Saint Joseph School were recently recognized at a special Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark for earning the prestigious "Mary, the First Disciple" award. Originally called the "Marian Medal," this award was created for young women to help them learn more about Mary and themselves. In their studies and activities, they meet Mary in Scripture as a young teenager, follow her journey and watch her grow into the woman known as the Mother of God.

Congratulations to our two Cadette recipients (L-R) Dana Barnes and Samantha Romanelli.

Saint Joseph Girl Scout Troop 557 will be selling cookies on March 21-22 after the 5 pm, 10:30 am and 12 noon Masses to support their endeavors.
