Mary is the patron saint of our nation under her title of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, whose feast day is December 8. The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults gives a clear explanation of what the
doctrine that underlies the feast means in a statement that incorporates a quotation from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which is the basis for the American catechism:
An essential part of God’s plan for the mother of his Son was that she be conceived free from original Sin. “Through the centuries the Church became ever more aware that Mary, ‘full of grace’ through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception” (CCC, no. 491). In anticipation that she was to bear the Son of God, Mary was preserved from the time of her conception from Original Sin. We call this the Immaculate Conception. No sin would touch her, so that she would be a fitting and worthy vessel of the Son of God. The Immaculate Conception does not refer to the virginal conception and birth of Christ, but rather to Mary’s being conceived without inheriting Original Sin.
Although the doctrine was formally defined by Pope Pius IX only in 1854, it was long part of Catholic belief. The feast was celebrated at least as far back as the seventh century. Two scriptural passages have constantly been interpreted as supporting the teaching: Gen. 3, 15 (“I will put enmity between you [that is, the serpent: Satan] and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel.") and Lk 1, 28 (“And [the angel Gabriel] came to her and said, ‘Hail, full of grace, the lord is with you!’”) Geoffrey Chaucer beautifully expresses his love for Mary in “The Prioress’s Tale,” one of The Canterbury Tales, when he writes that
So weak is my ability, O Blessed Queen, To declare your great worthiness That I cannot bear the weight, But like a child of twelve months old or less, Who can hardly speak a word, Just so am I, and therefore I pray you: Guide the song which I shall speak of you.

Our Giving Trees, an Advent tradition at Saint Joseph Parish, are located in the main entrance of the Church and at the Harrison Street entrance. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas.
All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned no later than Sunday, December 16. You may place them under the tree in church or drop them off at the Rectory/Parish Office.

Milford for our annual Christmas Party. The doors will open at 7:00 pm. We ask all the ladies to bring a favorite Christmas goody for our sharing table and the men to supply the drinks. Also, again this year we ask that you bring an ornament for our tree, in the form of a money donation. Anything from $1 up will be appreciated. At the end of the evening, the money will be given to a needy family in our Parish. You can make the ornament simply by tying a ribbon around the money and leaving a loop so that you can hang it on the tree. There will be some ribbon and help if you need it, when you get to the party. You may bring your spouse or significant other even if they haven't experienced Cornerstone. Let's come together to sing, play games, and share some good food as we celebrate our Savior's Birth!

Fr. Giuseppe is the fourth of five children of immigrant Italian parents. He graduated from Boston College Law School and practiced law for nine years before joining the Community of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in 2002. He graduated from St. Joseph Seminary summa cum laude and was ordained to the priesthood in 2011. He is currently the local superior at St. Mary of the Assumption Friary in Newburgh, NY where he works with the poor and gives retreats.
