A NEW FACE

Very Rev. Thomas Ciba (Fr. Tom), has been celebrating Sunday Masses and weekday Masses this past month. When Fr. Tom learned of Monsignor’s health problems, he offered to help while Monsignor recovered from his

surgery. Fr. Tom is a classmate of Monsignor Hubba and is recently retired. For the past nine years he was pastor of Our Lady of Czestochowa parish in Jersey City; previous to that, he was pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Nutley for twelve years. In Fr. Tom’s own words he is happy to help “in such a wonderful parish.” Thank you, Fr. Tom!

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ MAY 6, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Annulments (Part 2):

Last week I described how to apply for a marriage annulment if the marriage took

place in a Catholic setting or with Catholic approval. But what if a Catholic entered into a marriage outside the Catholic Church? Unless a Catholic gets the Church’s permission for a marriage to take place in a non-Catholic church or religion, or in a civil ceremony, the marriage does not enjoy Catholic recognition. (But see below the exception for marriages in Orthodox churches.) This means that if such a union ends in divorce, the former spouses may enter into a marriage that has Catholic standing after they obtain a “Declaration of Nullity for Defect of Form.” This is a decree issued by a Catholic Marriage Tribunal declaring that the previous ceremony does not count in the Church’s eyes because the Catholic party failed to meet our requirement that marriages take place before an authorized priest and two witnesses. The decree can be obtained in a few days’ time. The petitioner applies through a parish priest, who will help fill out the required application and take down the sworn evidence of two witnesses, who verify the circumstances of the marriage. The petitioner also submits copies of his or her baptismal certificate, marriage certificate and divorce decree, plus a $75 processing fee. However, it is important to note that if a Catholic who is free to marry has a marriage ceremony, without permission, in one of the churches of the Orthodox tradition, even though the marriage is unlawful according to Catholic rules, it still qualifies as a valid marriage in Catholic law and is binding for as long as both spouses live. This is because the Catholic Church recognizes the validity of Orthodox sacraments and priesthood. Furthermore, baptized Catholics who leave our Faith and join another church by an act of formal membership are no longer obliged to observe the Catholic form of marriage. This means that our Church regards marriages they later enter into as binding for life. In these latter two cases, full-scale formal annulments are needed if there is to be a subsequent marriage in the Catholic Church. Any of our priests or Deacon George can help you with matters of Church marriage law. Just ask us.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” JOHN 15:12-13 Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? Jesus says that if we love Him we would be willing to offer whatever we have to Him, not because we want praise and glory, but simply because we love Him. Does your giving seem mechanical out of obligation or do you share freely out of love?
