Reflections

We begin today’s Liturgy of the Word with the foretelling of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Messiah. “Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit” (IS 42:1). On this Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord, which is also understood as the ongoing Epiphany of the Lord who is being introduced to us by John as the one and only savior of the world, we might ask why is Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God, being baptized and receiving the Holy Spirit? The baptism of the Lord is a revelation to us that Jesus is the second person of the Holy Trinity. St. John the Baptist witnesses for us that the Father and the Holy Spirit acknowledge that Jesus is one with them. St. Peter Chrysologus wrote: “In choosing to be born for us, God chose to be known by us. He therefore reveals himself in this way, in order that this great sacrament of his love may not be an occasion for us of great misunderstanding.” God became man not for his salvation but for ours. Our Lord Jesus Christ reveals to us in his baptism that he is one with us in every way except sin, that he is here to incorporate us into the life of the Holy Trinity. St. Chrysologus further writes: “Today Christ enters the Jordan to wash away the sin of the world. John himself testifies that this is why he has come: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Today a servant lays his hand on the Lord, a man lays his hand on God, John lays his hand on Christ, not to forgive but to receive forgiveness.” Today’s gospel recounts the event: “After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (LK 3:21-22). This event tells us that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one. The baptism of the Lord does not create the Holy Trinity, rather it manifests the reality of the Holy Trinity and begins to show us the way to be completely restored to Almighty God. St. Cyril of Alexandria wrote: “The only-begotten Son receives the Spirit, but not for his own advantage…He receives it to renew our nature in its entirety and to make it whole again, for in becoming man he took our entire nature to himself. If we reason correctly, and use also the testimony of Scripture, we can see that Christ did not receive the Spirit for himself, but rather for us in him; for it is also through Christ that all gifts come down to us.” Our second reading today assures us that no one is excluded from the gift of salvation. “Peter proceeded to speak to those gathered in the house of Cornelius, saying: ‘In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him’” (ACTS 10:34-35). The gift of salvation comes to all of us, but does not take away our free will. To receive the gift of salvation we must exercise our free will to join in our Lord’s baptism and enter into the everlasting covenant, renouncing sin and giving ourselves to Christ. When we are baptized we profess our faith which is our baptismal promise, our sins are washed away, and we embark on a life of conversion to be fully restored to the Holy Trinity. St. Hippolytus wrote: “Whoever goes down into these waters of rebirth with faith renounces the devil and pledges himself to Christ. He repudiates the enemy and confesses that Christ is God, throws off his servitude, and is raised to filial status. He comes up from baptism resplendent as the sun, radiant in his purity, but above all, he comes as a son of God and a coheir with Christ. To him and to his most holy and life-giving Spirit be glory and power now and for ever. Amen.”
