FESTIVAL 2018 Greetings of Peace and Love! Our Annual Parish Festival will be held on the weekend of October 6th and 7th. Our theme this year is “One Faith, One Family, One Community.” The Festival is our major fundraiser to maintain and sustain our church - to support the various parish ministries, to cater the pastoral needs of our people, to maintain our facilities and to continuously facilitate our charity and education mission. For these reasons, we hope you will wholeheartedly support our parish festival. Books of tickets for our Raffle will be sold after Mass or in the parish office. There are four cash prizes ranging from $100 to $500. Tickets are $10 dollars for a book of twelve (12) tickets. You may return the ticket stubs along with your donation to the parish office or bring them to the vestibule after our Sunday Masses. We hope you will participate generously again this year in whatever way you can. The festival begins on Saturday, October 6th with our Western Hoe-Down BBQ Dinner. There will be music, dancing, raffles and a live auction. Our Festival continues on Sunday, October 7th with games, food booths, music and drawing of the Raffle. Let us make our annual parish festival a success. Thank you for being part of our parish family and faith community. May the good Lord bless you and your family so greatly. Sincerely yours, Fr. America Needs Fatima

Come join us for the Rosary Rally on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 12noon. We will meet in front of the Church and statue of Our Lady of Fatima. More than 30,000 people were present in September 1917 and were witnesses of a shower of mysterious white petals fall to the ground before dissolving into the air. Many also saw the glow of light bearing the Lady come to rest atop a tree and the branches bend as though someone were stand-ing on them. Later, they saw the cloud depart into the east from whence it had come. On the days preceding October 13, all roads leading to Fatima were filled with people coming from all parts of the land in various ways of transportation just to see Fatima. Many walked for miles and miles. It rained all night of the 12th and the morning of the 13th. More than 70,000 people had crowded around the Cova by noon, standing in the mud, seeking protection from the rain as they prayed the rosary.

Treasures From Our Tradition

From its earliest days, the Church has had an interest in the education of young people. In ancient Rome, teachers of boys had to resign their posts in order to become catechumens, since the education of boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public education has been so attuned to other values that creative solutions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, government schools had a goal of “Anglicizing” the Irish in culture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of “hedge schools.” In these largely secret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cottages and barns throughout Ireland, schoolmasters provided eager students with a classical education grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish literature, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws forbade Catholics from teaching young people publicly or privately, and “civil disobedience” ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish children enrolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by opening schools for the poor. Eventually her companions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, inspired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same purpose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that diminished their love of learning and threatened their faith.

Not Against Us

Like Moses before him, Jesus corrects his disciples’ misunderstanding of the gift of the Spirit. They saw people who were not of their company casting out demons and doing other works such as Jesus had done. Jesus points out that no one who does a good deed in his name can be opposed to him at the same time. He goes on to point out the importance of the “little ones,”: the poor, simple people, children, the meek ones who are not important in the world. It is to them that he was sent, not to the wealthy and the self-righteous. He underscores the importance of small works done in faith, as well as big works like driving out demons. “Anyone who gives you a cup of water . . . because you belong to Christ . . . will surely not lose his reward” (Mark 9:41). God builds the coming reign little by little in our actions, however small and unassuming, when they are done out of love of God and neighbor. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
