Challenge Girls Ministry

Knights of Columbus Father Michael J. McGivney started the Knights

of Columbus in the basement of St. Mary’s Parish in New Haven in 1882. It has become the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization. The Knights of Columbus today has more than 1.8 million members organized in 15,000 councils throughout North and Central America, the Philippines, the Caribbean and Easter Europe. With charity as their first principle, Knights donated more than $170 million and more than 70.5 million hours to charitable causes last year alone.

Father McGivney’s vision has touched millions of lives, while remaining relevant and inspiring today. If you are a Catholic male and at least 18 years of age, consider becoming part of this group of Catholic gentlemen whose first principle is Charity. Contact any Brother Knight, easily spotted wearing his Councils name badge, for more information.

Y seguimos caminando. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos– Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. America Needs Fatima!

More than 30,000 people were present in September and saw a shower of mysteri-ous white petals fall to within 10 feet of the ground before dissolving into the air. Many also saw the globe of light bearing the Lady come to rest atop the tree and the branches bend as though someone were standing on them. Later, they saw the cloud depart into the east, from whence it had come.

On the days preceding October 13th, all roads led to Fatima, with people coming from all parts of the land in many forms of transportation. Many walked for miles. It rained all the night of the 12th and the morning of the 13th. By noon, more than 70,000 had crowded into the Cova. Standing in mud, seeking protection from the relentless rain, as they prayed the Rosary.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

On Good Friday, at the heart of the Triduum, the commemoration of the Lord’s Passion is colored by sobriety and decorum, but this Thursday the mystery comes in a luminous celebration of Christ’s victory. In its deepest origins, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is the feast of a dedication of a church, since in the year 335 the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was dedicated on September 13, and on the following day the “true cross” discovered by St. Helena was brought outside to the faithful for veneration. It is a great feast of the Eastern Church, which often marks it by having the whole assembly prostrate themselves on the floor honoring the life-giving cross. At the core of the tradition is the quest of Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, to acquire the cross and the nails of the Crucifixion from the ruins of Jerusalem. When she was satisfied that she had found them, thanks to the healing of a sick man whose body was placed on the cross, she had her son fund the building of the great basilica. The history of the relic is complicated, especially because it was carried off by invading Persians in the year 614 and “went missing” for fifteen years. Thursday’s feast does not celebrate the relic, but rather the life-giving cross from which salvation flows. It’s a good day to look around your house or office: Don’t those walls look bare without a cross? What better day to remedy that?

A Reflection from Deacon Dennis Merino

Treat your servant in accord to your merciful love. Today’s readings deal with LOVE…

In all that we do, we should be motivated by love. We are told to love our neighbor as ourselves……. I truly believe we cannot love our neighbor with the right love unless we love ourselves first. This is not narcissistic love, putting oneself first. It means looking at our self with true objective perspective. This means recognizing and accepting all of our flaws, deepest wounds and skeletons. Realizing this is exactly the way God created us, not to be perfect, for this can only happen when we come face to face with perfection, but challenged we are to become perfect. This seems like an oxymoron, but it isn’t if we put it in perspective. God is asking us to have faith in His love even when we are unsettled, insecure, fearful, and seemingly lost in our own acceptance and love of self. This can only be attained when we look at ourselves in complete vulnerability, without delusion. When we see ourselves in all of our ugliness and sin, yet embrace our self with the reality that God loves us exactly as we are. He created us this way. As the Prophet Jerimiah said long ago …”Before we were formed in our mother’s womb, God knew us and said we were good”… Therefore, we can love our self exactly as we are. This doesn’t give us a free ride. I believe, when we can see our self as God see’s us and He still loves us, it’s not farfetched to believe we can do the same. I also believe, this awareness within us, creates a burning desire to love and please God for His incredible mercy and acceptance. The question really is this….. If God can love us with all of our warts and pimples, why can’t we do the same? When we reach this point a peace and comfort we have never known will fill us with such passion for love of God, self and neighbor, nothing will prohibit us from fully loving our neighbor. I believe, in this imperfection, we are perfect.

May God’s Peace, Love, and Mercy be with you all
