A HEART-TO-HEART TALK
Dr. Mary Ann McLaughlin, a cardiologist at Mt. Sinai Hospital and a parishioner of Saint Joseph, gave a wonderful talk on the “Healthy Heart” at last Sunday’s COFFEE TALK after the 8:30 am Mass (sponsored by the Pastoral Council). WHERE ARE THEY GOING? WHAT ARE THEY DOING?
If you attend our 10:30 am Sunday Mass in the upper church, you know that a small group of people are being dismissed each
Sunday following the homily. The priest calls them forward and then he sends them out of the church to further reflect on the word of God. Today, and in the weeks leading to Easter Sunday, this group of people will not only continue to be dismissed from Mass but there will be special prayers prayed over them before they leave.
This special group includes two people who were baptized in Protestant denominations and who are now preparing to join the Catholic Church and two other people who were never baptized. I would like to tell you about what will be taking place today and in the weeks ahead as these people approach the celebration of Easter.
CANDIDATES - Katherine & Jennifer Yesterday, Saturday, February 16, Katherine Ippoliti and Jennifer VanAlstyne, the two people who are already baptized and preparing to become members of the Catholic Church, joined hundreds of other people in the same situation at the Cathedral Basilica in Newark.
There they were formally recognized and accepted by the Archbishop as candidates to be welcomed into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Since Katherine and Jennifer are baptized, they already have some relationship with us as part of the Church. But they will not have full communion with us until they formally profess the Catholic Faith, receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, and join us in receiving the Body and Blood of the Lord in Holy Communion. That will take place on Holy Saturday evening, March 30, during the celebration of the Easter Vigil.
As a parish we will pray especially for Katherine and Jennifer next Sunday, February 24. We will ask the Lord that during this time of Lent they will more clearly recognize their need for his forgiveness and mercy as they approach the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist, and also prepare for the Sacrament of Penance, also known as Reconciliation or Confession.
OUR ELECT - Matt & Glynnis Today, Sunday, February 17, Matt Schoenberg and Glynnis Doda, who are preparing for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, will be sent forth from our parish to go to the Cathedral Basilica in Newark. There at 4:30 pm they will join hundreds of people from parishes throughout Bergen and Hudson
Counties for the Rite of Election. During a magnificent ceremony, presided over by the Archbishop, they will be formally chosen or “elected” to receive the three Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil of Holy Saturday night, March 30. During that Rite of Election they will solemnly write their names in the Book of the Elect. Once this happens they will no longer be referred to as catechumens (those being catechized or learning about
the faith), they will be the elect (those approved and accepted by the Church for the Sacraments of Initiation.)
RCIA & OUR TEAM During these ceremonies at the Cathedral Basilica, Katherine, Jennifer, Matt and Glynnis will be joined by their sponsors and godparents, and also by the members of our parish who are part of our RCIA Team. (RCIA
stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.) This team helps to prepare adults to receive the sacraments that make someone a full member of the Church, namely, Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The members of our RCIA Team include Frank Conti, Fred Fakharzadeh, Irene Galvin, Reynaldo Perez, Melinda Rabbia, Jude de los Reyes, and Kurt Strobach.
MARCH 3, 10, 17, THE SCRUTINIES On the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent, namely, March 3, 10, 17, there will be special prayers for the elect before they are dismissed from Mass. These solemn prayers are called the Rites of Scrutiny. These rites “are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, and then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good.” At these 10:30 am Masses, the scripture readings will be different from those used at our other Masses. They will relate to the Rites of Scrutiny. March 3, the Gospel will be that of the “Woman at the Well.” March 10, the Gospel will be that of the “Man Born Blind.” March 17, the Gospel will be the “Raising of Lazarus. “
OUR COMMON SPIRITUAL JOURNEY During these days of Lent, we as a parish will be especially praying for our two elect and for our two candidates for full communion. Their presence reminds us that as a parish we are commanded by Jesus to share the Gospel with others and to lead them to Him and His Church.
This Lent our parish is blessed to have Matt, Glynnis, Katherine, and Jennifer among us. Their journey to Easter and to the Sacraments of Initiation reminds us of our ongoing spiritual journey that moves us from sin and selfishness and draws us ever closer to the Lord. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

WOMEN’S CORNERSTONE MARCH 1-2 Our last meeting before the March 1st weekend will be held this Wednesday evening, February 20 at 8 pm in the K of C in New Milford. All team members are urged to attend this meeting as we will be going over last minute arrangements for our weekend There will also be a time for us to pray and share together as we invite the Holy Spirit to take all of our efforts of the past year and bless them and use us as we share the Retreat Weekend with our new Ladies. It will be a time for prayer, sharing, and fellowship as we journey together.

The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from
St. Luke 4:1-13.
In today’s Gospel, Saint Luke tells us that the Holy Spirit
led Jesus into the desert for forty days. During those forty
days, Jesus fasted and prayed and thought about his
mission from God. During that time, Jesus was tempted
three times by the devil.
In the first temptation, the devil said to Jesus, “If you are
the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
Jesus said to the devil that “one does not live on bread
alone.” Jesus knew we need to do what God asks, and not
just take care of our own needs.
In the second temptation, the devil told Jesus he would
make him powerful and the ruler of all the world if he
would worship him and not God. Jesus told the devil that
we are to worship and serve God and no one else.
In the third temptation, the devil took Jesus to the top of
the temple in Jerusalem and told Jesus to jump off. The
devil told Jesus that if he truly was the Son of God, then
God would save him. Jesus told the devil, “You shall not
put the Lord your God to the test.” Jesus said we have to
trust in God and not test God!
Eventually the devil went away, but he would come back
later to tempt Jesus again and again. But Jesus would
always stay true to God. Jesus did not give in to the devil’s
temptations.
Today is the first Sunday of Lent. Lent is a period of forty
days. It is a time for us to do what Jesus did in the desert.
It is a time for us to pray and to get closer to God. It is also
a time for us to make sure we are living as God’s children
and not giving into temptation.
Lent is also a good time to fast, to give up something as a
way to show our love for God. For example, we can give
up buying candy and give the money we save to help feed
the hungry. We can watch TV or play video games for only
one hour each day and then use the extra time we have to
pray, to help others, or to read a book about God. Doing
such things and praying to God will keep us strong when
the devil tempts us to do something wrong.

Think of one special thing you can do during the days of Lent to show your love of God. Write it down, and put the paper somewhere in your room so you remember
