CHRISTMAS DAY DECEMBER 25, 2011

THE PASTOR’S COLUMN

REFLECTING AT CHRISTMAS

On behalf of the members of the parish staff (Father Raul, Father Roy, Mr. Heath Winborn, Mrs. Colette Vail, Mrs. Angela Gussoni, Mr. Anthony Amando, Mrs. Arlene Kennedy, and Mr. Monroe Quinn), best wishes for a joyous Christmas Season. May

you truly feel the presence of the Prince of Peace in your life during this special time of the year.

I want to use this column to give you an update on some of the good things that have taken place here in our parish during this year of 2011, which is rapidly drawing to a close. Sometimes we are so busy living each day that we do not take the time to look back and appreciate what has happened during the past months.

Many fine things have taken place at our parish thanks to the Lord, and thanks to your sharing of your faith, time, talent, and treasure with your parish family. I would like to remind you of some of them.

February We began training a baptism preparation team that would be responsible for a new baptism preparation program. Sister Sandy DeMasi and Sisters Donna Ciangio worked with this team of parish members for several months.

March Some 120 teenagers took part in Confirmation Retreats designed to help prepare them to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Meitler Consultants of Wisconsin began working with our parish to produce a five year strategic plan for every aspect of our parish, including our school. The plan, called Forward in Faith 2016, was completed in late November and will be presented to the parish January 9, 2012.

There was a Cornerstone Retreat for Women, and a Cornerstone Retreat for Men. This marked 19 years of such retreats at our parish.

The Parish Pastoral Council sponsored an In Pew Survey to gather thoughts and ideas from parish members.

April Our new parish website (sjcnj.org) went live! A new school website soon followed (sjsusa.org). We enhanced our presence on the web.

May Bishop Dominic Marconi celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for 122 teenagers of our parish.

120 children received their First Holy Communion at our Sunday Masses.

June Father Roy Regaspi, a newly ordained priest, was assigned to our parish. He replaced Father Tony Ricarti, who was re-assigned to Bergen Catholic High School and Sacred Heart Parish in Haworth.

July Anne Annunziato became our new parish secretary following the retirement of Gloria DeStefano after 30 years of service.

August All the rooms in our two school buildings were given a new lease on life. The walls were painted, the floors were cleaned and polished, the blackboards were replaced with white boards, and smart boards/short throw projectors were installed in many classrooms.

The school gym was refurbished to look like new! A Parish Music Committee was established. The Saint Joseph Athletic Association, which sponsors basketball, cheerleading, and track, was re-organized to better serve the needs of parish children.

September Saint Joseph School was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the US Department of Education. This prestigious honor proclaims to all the superior education available at our parish school.

the greenhouse, a new, all-day early childhood program at our school opened its doors to eager 3 and 4 year old children. With new, enthusiastic teachers, and refurbished rooms, the greenhouse truly is a place where "where little scholars begin to blossom!"

We began a series of homilies to help us grow in our understanding of the Mass and to prepare us for the new English translation of the prayers of the Mass.

October, The Parish Pastoral Council sponsored our first ever Stewardship Day. More than 200 people came together for an afternoon of service to others.

We began celebrating Baptisms at Sunday Mass.

December The Parish Finance Council adopted a new guideline for giving, 2% PLUS, because it's my parish and I'm grateful. It encourages all of us give at least 2% of our income to support the work of our parish.

A three person team from the Middle States Association spent three days at our school. Their inspection was part of the school's process of re-accreditation by the Association. They were most impressed.

The Parish Finance Council published a Parish Annual Report in a new eight page format to better inform all the members of the parish of the good things taking place at Saint Joseph Parish.

These are some of the good things that happened in 2011. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from

Luke Chapter 2, verses 1-14 In today’s Christmas Gospel, Saint Luke tells us about the birth of Jesus. That first Christmas, God gave us the very best gift He could. God gave us the gift of His Son, who was born in a stable and welcomed by singing angels and surprised shepherds. Jesus was born to show us just how much God loved us. He also was born to show us how we should live as children of God. Just as we learn from our parents and our brothers and sisters how to talk, how to walk, how to be polite, how to play with others and how to act in public, so Jesus teaches us by his word, his example, and his life. From him we learn how to live as “Christians” and how we can bring joy into our world.

Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee.

NOTE TO PARENTS The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9 am Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue the celebration of the Liturgy with their families. We want God's Good News to be exciting for the younger members of our parish family. If you wish to help with this committee, please contact us at ([email protected]).

MERRY CHRISTMAS

from the

LITURGY OF THE WORD

WITH CHILDREN COMMITTEE.

See you again on Sunday, January 8, 2012

for our next session.
