HELP NEEDED! SAINT JOSEPH LINEN MINISTRY

There is a group of parishioners who launder the smaller altar linens (corporals and purificators) at Saint Joseph Church.

This ministry is called Veronica's Veil (after the cloth used according to tradition to wipe the face of Jesus on the way to his crucifixion). There are presently six women who are part of Veronica’s Veil. Every six weeks one takes a turn to wash and iron. We would love to have more in our ranks. Please take time to think and pray about joining our group. You would be most welcome! For more information, contact Pat DeNicolo at 201-261- 4323.

The definition of prayer long familiar to many of us is borrowed from St. John Damascene, who wrote, in his work On

Orthodox Faith that

Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, following longstanding custom, makes prayer the last of its four “pillars” of our religion, in a beautifully written summary I strongly recommend to your attention. Its first statement in this section movingly reminds us that

… the living and true God tirelessly calls each person to that mysterious encounter known as prayer. In prayer the faithful God’s initiative of love always comes first; our own first step is always a response. As God gradually reveals himself, prayer appears as a reciprocal call, a covenant drama. Through words and actions, this drama engages the heart.

Among the many riches of our Catholic heritage is our tradition of prayer. We have been taught by a great number of saints and wise writers, who have prayed according to numerous methods and styles. This means that whatever we are like, or whatever we do in life, there is a reliable guide to prayer who is a good match for our personality and our needs. If prayer is a daily obligation for us, it is also a contact with God that repays our effort with enormous joys. Next week I will review with you some of the many ways Catholic people pray. But for now, let me suggest to you that anyone who would like to pray better should take an initial step that is absolutely necessary. And that is to make time for prayer. If there is anything at all we want to do very much, we have to find time for it. We can, and perhaps should, start small, by finding, say, fifteen minutes in our day when we turn our focus on God. If we do, we will be off to a good start. If we really mean it when we say we intend to pray, we will show our sincerity in this way. In his modern classic of spiritual writing No Man Is an Island Thomas Merton concludes his reflections on the importance of sincerity by pointing out that

The most important thing in prayer is the way we present ourselves as we are before God as He is. This cannot be done without a generous effort of recollection and self-searching. But if we are sincere, our prayer will never be fruitless. Our sincerity itself establishes an instant contact with the God of all truth.

This Tuesday at 2:00 pm at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Archbishop Myers will celebrate a Mass to welcome

His new Coadjutor Archbishop Bernard Hebda. The basilica is sure to be filled for this important occasion, in which the people of the Archdiocese will greet the man who will one day be our spiritual shepherd.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee

The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus.

The Gospel Reading for today is from

Saint Luke 19: 1-10.

When Jesus traveled from town to town, he

attracted large crowds of people. In today’s

Gospel, there was a short man by the name of

Zacchaeus (zuh-kee-us). Because the crowd

was so large, he climbed a tree in order to see

Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he told

Zacchaeus to come down the tree and prepare

for Jesus to stay at his home. Zacchaeus

received Jesus with joy.

Zacchaeus had gotten rich by taking money

from his neighbors so most people did not

like him. He was lonely and sad. When

Jesus spoke to him, he felt special. Jesus

showed Zacchaeus kindness and friendship

and for the first time Zacchaeus felt happy.

After this incident, Zacchaeus gave to his

neighbors instead of taking from them.

There are a lot of people who are like

Zacchaeus. Many of them are lonely and sad

and sometimes are not accepted by others.

Jesus loves us fully, completely and with no

conditions. He wants us to love others the

same way. If we open our hearts to other

people, we will make those people happy as

well as making ourselves happy. Jesus tells

us that by giving happiness we receive

happiness.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

I will find time

to show God that I love him

by helping someone who is lonely or sad.

Jesus told Zacchaeus to come down

because he was going to stay at his house.
