GIVING THOUGHT We can express our thanks to God through our prayers of thanks and gratitude. The word “thanksgiving” itself teaches us another way of expressing our thanks to God. We thank God by our giving, by our thanks giving. Each time we place our offering in the Sunday collection we are thanks giving. The greater our giving, the greater our thanks!

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2011

THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL, HOMILY TWO Last Sunday, November 13, the following homily was preached at our Masses and in many parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Newark. This is the second of four homilies the Office of Divine Worship has suggested be delivered to help us prepare for the Third Edition of the Roman Missal.

Words, words, words. We swim in an ocean of words. Words come at us from

family members, friends, neighbors, teachers, bosses, politicians, advertisers, and more. Those words come through the radio, television, newspapers, cell phones, twitter, facebook, emails, text messages, conversations, and more.

So many words come at us that we tune out many of them. They just become part of the background hum of daily life. And if we do listen, we often forget what we heard. Yet words have power, great power. Words can change things.

In the Gospel, Jesus told the parable of a man whose words changed things for his servants. The master called in his three servants, and with his words, he entrusted each of them with a sum of money to care for in his absence. When the master returned, he called each to account.

When the first and second servants announced they had each doubled their master's money, the master said to each of them, "Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come; share your master's joy." The master's words gave them praise and granted them greater authority.

When the third servant arrived with only the money he had initially received, his master commanded, "Throw this useless servant into the darkness outside where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth." The master's words brought condemnation and punishment to the third servant.

The master's words had power. They could alter the situation of his servants. Yet the power of his words is nothing compared to power of the words found in the Mass. In the Mass, we hear God's transforming word proclaimed in the scripture readings. We hear words that have changed the lives of millions of people.

In the Mass we also hear the words, the voice, of the Church. The words that make up the prayers of the Mass were carefully chosen under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to express what we believe. There is a principle that says what the Church says in its prayer, is what the Church believes. That means that if a person wants to know the Catholic faith, that person simply has to listen to the prayers of the liturgy.

How we pray, reveals what we believe. Knowing that, explains why the Church is so careful in deciding what words it uses.

Last week, we mentioned that the official liturgy of the Church is found in ritual books, first composed in the Latin Language. The book that contains the prayers of the Mass is called the Roman Missal. We will begin using a new edition of the Roman Missal on November 27, the first Sunday of Advent,

The translation of this book has been guided by a document from the Vatican that requires new translations to be as close to the Latin version as possible in terms of style, language, and sentence structure.

Let's consider what this means. Currently, when we profess our faith following the homily, we stand and say, "We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty." Soon we will say, "I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty." The change from "We" to "I" has come about because the Latin word that begins the Creed is "Credo," which literally means "I believe." Since the Church wishes the English translation to be as close to the Latin as possible, we have the change.

The Profession of Faith or Creed will have a number of similar changes throughout the text, again to make the English closer to the Latin. For example, rather than saying "one in being with the Father,” we will say, “consubstantial with the Father." (Note the full text of the Creed appears on the next page)

There is no doubt that when it comes to the Creed we will have our eyes glued to the written text as we encounter new words and phrases that we have not used before. Over time, those words and phrases will become as familiar as the ones we are now using.

At this point we might be asking, “Why we are bothering to substitute one set of words for another in the Creed and in other parts of the Mass?” “Why not just leave things alone?” The answer lies in the fact that words have power, words change things, words influence us, words can express the truth, and sometimes words can hide the truth.

The Church is calling upon us to use words in the liturgy that clearly express what we believe and that are more faithful to the Latin text, that we believe contains the best of our liturgical tradition

May our care for the words of the Mass, be such, that like the first and second servants of the Gospel, we will hear our Master say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant... come share your master's joy."

THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL The New English Translation

Starting next Sunday, November 27, we will be using a new English translation of the Roman Missal that contains the prayers of the Mass. Below are some examples of the new wording. Parts in bold indicate change from the present text.

THE CREED / THE PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER FOR ACCEPTANCE OF OUR SACRIFICE May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

PREFACE DIALOGUE Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Priest: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right and just.

A CORNERSTONE REFLECTION by Gail Winter

The Cornerstone Retreat Program has had quite an impact on me and my life. It has deepened my spirituality by sharing life experiences with others, by

learning more about my faith than I ever could imagine and, most importantly, by learning to trust more in our Lord. Often when things are upsetting to me or I’m confused about something, I say “Show me the way, Lord.” Somehow my burden is lifted and things do work out. Connecting with

other women is a wonderful experience. At Cornerstone, I feel an inner peace never felt before. Cornerstone is one of the best gifts I have ever given myself.

(The next Women’s Cornerstone Retreat is March 2 & 3) (The next Men’s Cornerstone Retreat is March 23 & 24)

ATTENTION ALL LITURGICAL MINISTERS As you may have noticed, the liturgical ministry

schedule appears less frequently in the bulletin. With

an increasing number of announcements and activities

space is at premium. We thought that we should take

advantage of our great website (sjcnj.org) and place

all the liturgical schedules there. In this way, anyone

who may have misplaced their hard copy will have it

available online.

We need additional Special Ministers of Holy

Communion to serve at our Christmas Masses. Please

see the Christmas schedule placed in the Sacristy and

fill in your name at the Masses you will be available

to serve. Thank you.

SAINT JOSEPH PARISH WORKING TOGETHER TO

SHARE THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS THROUGH

THE GIVING TREE Once again, it is time to prepare our homes and hearts for Christmas. What better way to prepare than to share the

blessings and joys of Christmas with those in need.

This year our Giving Tree will be helping families from Catholic Charities, families from the North Bergen area through Our Lady of Fatima Parish; the Covenant House; and Bergen Regional Medical Center.

The Giving Tree will be placed in the main entrance of the Church, with a second tree at the Harrison Street entrance. Please, take a tag from the Giving Tree; purchase the requested gift; and place the WRAPPED gift under the tree the next time you come to Mass.

The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping to whom the gift is meant for. Therefore, it is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the WRAPPED gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas.

All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned to the church

no later than Sunday-December 11 Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Anne Annunziato, our parish secretary, at the rectory office (201-261-0148).

THE GOSPEL IS THE GOOD NEWS

ABOUT JESUS

The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Matthew

Chapter 25 verses 31-46.

A few weeks ago, Jesus told us about a commandment

that we should love one another as we love ourselves.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us this love should

be given freely to everyone no matter who they are.

Jesus tells us that each loving thing we do to help

others or every kind word we speak will bring us

closer to God. Jesus tells us that whatever we do for

people in need we do for him.

NOTE TO PARENTS

The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9am Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue the celebration of the Mass with their families. If anyone is interested in helping with this program or is interested in helping with the publication of this page, you can contact us at ([email protected])

NOTE TO KIDS Thursday is Thanksgiving. Be sure to thank God for the

blessings that God has given you. You can say this prayer

before your Thanksgiving Meal.

Loving God, we thank you

for all your blessings.

We thank you for this food, for our family

and friends, and for the joy we share

at this Thanksgiving Table.

May we always have thankful hearts

this Thanksgiving Day and every day!

Amen.
