CALL TO STEWARDSHIP

“Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid?” - Romans 11:35 St. Paul reminds us of a central fact of stewardship. We cannot give the Lord anything, because God already owns it all. God made everything. All that we can do is return a portion of God’s many gifts back to Him. Sincere gratitude for our gifts opens our hearts to joyful generosity!

3

TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 24, 2014

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Wednesday and Thursday the Church marks the feasts of Saint Monica (c. 331-387) and

her son Saint Augustine (354-430). Their days are celebrated consecutively because it is impossible to separate them from each other, so great was their influence on each other. As a young man, the brilliant Augustine searched for life’s foremost truth, experimenting with the pleasures of the senses (living with a mistress with whom he had a son), teaching university students, becoming the ancient equivalent of a media personality (at one point writing a speech for the Emperor of Rome), and exploring the teachings of various schools of philosophy. All this time, Monica worried about him intensely and prayed for him constantly. One time, when she beleaguered a bishop with her concerns for her son, he said to her: “Please go away now. A son you spend so much time lamenting about certainly won’t perish.” The bishop may or may not have been sympathetic enough, but he was certainly right, since Augustine became one of the Church’s wisest teachers and greatest saints. After it became clear that Augustine would align himself with Catholic Christianity and before he was ordained a priest, he established a small community committed to the pursuit of Christian wisdom. Monica supervised the household

(continued above)

and took part in a number of the discussions held there. Peter Brown, Augustine’s most famous modern biographer, points out that she was no wallflower and could “dismiss a whole philosophical school in a single vulgar word….” If you would like to learn more about Monica, read what Augustine says about her in Books 5 (Ch. 8) and 9 of his Confessions. Pope Benedict XVI has long had a deep attachment to Saint Augustine, who has been his theological master. In 2010, at the summer papal residence at Castel Gandolfo, he gave an address in which he spoke of the importance for us all of having helpful confessors and spiritual directors for sharing our faith journeys. And he saluted Augustine as “a good ‘traveling companion’ in my life and my ministry.” The pope said Augustine has a special importance for people of today.

St. Augustine was a man who never lived superficially; his thirst, his restless and constant thirst for the Truth is one of the basic characteristics of his existence; not however for “pseudo-truths,” incapable of giving the heart lasting peace, but of that Truth that gives meaning to life and is the “dwelling-place” in which the heart finds serenity and joy.

Benedict also recalled that another of his heroes, Romano Guardini, also a great admirer of Saint Augustine, said of him that he had

the pacifying certainty of those who have understood at last, but also the bliss of the love that knows: “this is everything and it is enough for me.”

DEEPEN YOUR FAITH, SHARE YOUR FAITH!

With Great Catholic Resources

Fr. Roy is proud to present a new evangelization opportunity here at Saint Joseph Parish. Lighthouse Catholic Media offers a practical and effective program to help Catholics know their Faith, keep their Faith, and share their Faith!

“We all have friends or family members who have fallen away from the Church, or loved ones

who are searching for answers about their Faith and want to increase their knowledge and understanding but don’t know where to begin. “Now you can reach out to them by offering a wonderful learning tool - a Lighthouse CD, book or booklet. Whether in the car or at home, people can deepen their understanding of the Catholic Faith when they listen to inspiring talks given by some of the best Catholic speakers in the world. At the Harrison Street side entrance of the church, you will see a display offering various CD titles, booklets and books. We ask for a donation of $3.00 per CD or booklet and $4.00 per book (or as marked) so that we may continue this program. If you will support this program, I will bring more materials according to the season of our liturgical calendar. Won’t you reach out and help bring someone home?” For more information, please contact Fr. Roy Regaspi at 201-261-0148.
