Each night of our Parish Mission will include prayer and a wonderful talk by author Fr. Gary Caster, who
has also written books about St. Therese of Lisieux, the “Little Flower.”
By focusing on the virtues of Joseph, Fr. Caster will help us explore what the Bible tells us about this great saint and what we can learn from him.
Refreshments and hospitality will be offered each evening. The final night, March 19, the Feast of Saint Joseph, we will have Mass with a Sharing Table afterward. All are welcome!

At one point in his delightful book Landscape and Memory British historian Simon Schama tells of
the Eighteenth Century French writer Ramond de Carbonniere’s journey over Mont Perdu, a peak of 10,997 feet in the Pyrenees that forms part of France’s awesome border with Spain:
[W]hen the climber is surrounded both above and below by cloud, mist, and granular snow, his power of measure- ment, of relative scale, is alarmingly disrupted. And “suddenly” the “earth disappeared.” Not only the earth, actually, but Ramond’s spectacles, when, on the horrendous face of Mont Perdu, they fall into a crevasse. Short-sighted as he is, and only able to crawl along very carefully, Ramond sees a horsefly and a mountain earwig maneuvering with careless ease over the rock. So much for our god- like conscience, he thinks. “A feeble insect plays about here where I have to hang on for dear life.”
At this point of our severe winter, any of us can sympathize with him. We may not know what is in store for us as winter moves through its allotted days, but, despite it all, we are drawing nearer to this year’s spring. For years Kathleen Norris has made pilgrimages to monasteries and convents throughout the Midwest. I hope her reflection on Psalm 42, from The Cloister Walk, is cheering:
[It] moves the way our emotions do, in fits and starts: “why are you cast down, my soul,/ why groan within me? / Hope in the Lord, I will praise God still” (v. 5). But its true theme is a desire for the holy that, whatever form it takes, seems to be a part of the human condition, a desire easily forgotten in the pull and tug of daily life, where groans of despair can predominate. One sister wrote to me: “Some winters ago, when ice covered all the lands surrounding our priory, deer came close in search of food. We had difficulty keeping them from eating our trees and even the shrubs in our cemetery.” Having been at the convent for many years, she had known most of the women buried there. One morning she woke to find that “each deer had selected a particular tombstone to lie behind, oblivious to us watching from the priory windows. The longing for God expressed at the beginning of Psalm 42, ‘Like the deer that yearns / for running streams, so my soul is yearning / for you, My God,’ has stayed with me ever since.” Msgr. ASH WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE —MARCH 5
The holy season of Lent begins in ten days on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.
Lent is a solemn, reflective season of the liturgical year that is the preparation for the mysteries of Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts 40 days, until Easter (the 40 days do not include the Sundays of Lent). On Ash Wednesday people come to Church to receive ashes on their forehead, a reminder that without God we are simply dust. The 40 days of Lent recall the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert before beginning his public ministry. During Lent Christians are called to renew themselves through fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence.

The current news coverage about the construction at the Archbishop's weekend residence contains a number of
misrepresentations. In addition, comments from readers that have appeared along with these news stories also contain numerous errors and mistakes.
Contrary to what some readers are writing in the Comments section of these stories, the Archdiocese has not maintained a full-time residence for the Archbishop in the Llewellyn Park area of West Orange for decades. The last Archbishop to live in that house was Archbishop Boland, who retired in 1974. That house was sold decades ago.
It is also important to know that Archbishop Myers' principal residence has always been the rectory of the Cathedral Basilica, where he lives in community with four other priests within the City of Newark. Like Archbishop Myers, both Archbishop Gerety and Cardinal McCarrick used the Cathedral Basilica rectory as their principal residence. Both had also maintained weekend residences as well.
The current weekend residence and future retirement home of Archbishop Myers was purchased in 2002 with funds from the sale of a prior residence at the Jersey Shore that had been donated to the Archdiocese several decades ago. This former residence was sold for more than the purchase price of the current weekend residence, and the Archdiocese used those funds for ministry purposes.
The planned construction is being paid for by donations from individuals specifically given for this purpose and the sale of other residential properties that the Archdiocese owns but does not need. The sale of these properties is expected not only to pay for the construction, but also to provide funds for other ministry uses.
No parishioner funds or AAA contributions are being used on this project. Similarly, no convents, schools or other Archdiocesan buildings are being sold to provide funding for this project. The Archdiocese does pay real estate taxes on this property.
It is also important to know that in recent years the Archdiocese of Newark, both directly and through subsidies by parishes, has provided some $15 million annually to maintain Catholic schools within the Archdiocese. Under the Lighting the Way strategic plan, the Archdiocese will continue to provide substantial financial support to Catholic elementary schools, and also will devote more resources toward marketing and enrollment services -- two areas that many individual schools have not been able to master on their own.

WHAT IS CORNERSTONE?
Cornerstone is a 26-hour retreat presented annually by parishioners with the intent to build each participant’s spirituality and to connect them with the Saint Joseph community.
It is called “Cornerstone” referring to Christ being the Cornerstone, the foundation upon which our lives are built. On the weekend, you will experience a focused atmosphere where you can initiate, deepen or revitalize your relationship with Christ, in a welcoming environment.
Many of us attend Mass, but because of our busy lives, find it hard to connect to our community of faith and have a close connection with others in our parish.
Spending this 26 hours at a Cornerstone weekend will give you the opportunity to make these connections with God and with others.
WHO CAN ATTEND CORNERSTONE?
Cornerstone is a parish-based retreat, open to men and women of Saint Joseph Parish, as well as other Christian faiths, held annually (one men’s and one women’s). You may wish to invite a family member or friend to attend with you.

A team of dedicated parishioners who have made Cornerstone and want to pass the gift on to others will present the weekend. Leading each team (Women’s & Men’s) is a Director and Facilitator, under the spiritual direction of our Pastor, Msgr. David Hubba.
WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE ON THE WEEKEND?
The retreat takes place in Saint Joseph Lower School, and begins at 7 pm on Friday evening. Your overnight stay, all meals (lovingly prepared), and plenty of snacks will be provided throughout the 26 hours.
The weekend activities will help you to affirm your own gifts and discover how you can use these gifts for the good of others. It is a fun way for church members to get to know each other and build lasting bonds of support and trust.
There are short presentations followed by small group discussions, quiet personal time, and Reconciliation. Everything shared on the weekend is held in strict confidence. There is also time for fun and relaxation. The weekend concludes with a Family Mass at 8 pm on Saturday evening. Family and friends are invited to attend. This is a weekend of great surprises, prepared especially for YOU! Every team member is dedicated to ensuring an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality.
